Yeah, that’s a hard one for me. Like his riff and hook writing style is definitely pushing the boundaries. I think he is a huge inspiration for people like MGF and Charlie Robbins. Like his style may not be my personal favorite (I prefer Plini and Joseph Anidjar and the abasi bois), but it’s undeniable that his composition style is hugely influential to the guitar playing that is in vogue rn.

@@MaddMag Tim had a big influence on Ichika too, but Ichika is able to be both technical and deeply emotional in his playing. I think Tim has maybe forgotten his own words about flexing. I'd rather listen to Hourglass or Nightmare for the millionth time instead of listening to anything off the new album again.

he's more of a better composer than a guitarist. I've seen him play improv guitar playing and his skill level just drops. He said in one video that he doesn't care about progressing, he just wanna make good music and progression is just a byproduct of that.

  • @jaema8281
    @jaema8281 2 ปีที่แล้ว +144

It seems odd to place Ichika in S for his ability to "make an atmosphere, having versatility in his playing, and being able to play without over production."
But then place Mateus in A
And it seems really weird to say that Manuel is pushing the boundaries of modern music and being innovative and unique
Then placing Tim Henson, the person who essentially pioneered the sound that Manuel himself would quote for being one of his biggest inspirations (and changing his sound completely from Unprocessed earlier work after Real's success with Tim Henson's Collab) for being "technical for the sake of being technical."
Manuel isn't? And if Manuel isn't, then there's absolutely no way that Tim is either. Personally, I'm not a huge fan of modern Polyphia, but they've pioneered not one, not two, but THREE (Muse, which inspired the shreddy happy "prog" that everyone bit afterwards. Renaissance, which was a departure yet an evolution of the Muse sound, which also resulted in crazy influence, AND this TMH/NLND/RYWD sound that is likely been the biggest push and evolution of guitar based genres since the 80s.)
Even within the clip you showed of Manuel, that doesn't seem "technical for the sake of being technical" at least a little?
Obviously, of course, this is your own personal list, but I just very much disagree with the reasons given, and I feel the reasons are sort of vague as well. If you're free to clarify, I might totally be missing something.
While I vehemently disagree with the list (which makes sense, it is YOUR list and not mine.) do respect the content and it was a fun watch! I wish you the best in the future!

    • @jaema8281
      @jaema8281 2 ปีที่แล้ว +26

FYI, I am not a huge Tim Henson Stan either. I stopped following Polyphia after NLND (good album, not my preferred sound) and to some degree, I think I'm known in my group as someone ridiculously harsh on Polyphia (Especially their newest album.) But I do think that there's a wild understatement to both Tim Hensons innovation (not only now, but across the last decade,) his honing of thumping (which was considered a bit of a stunt technique when not used by Tosin, until Tim gave it a completely new identity), his influence (especially over artists that everyone respects, like Manuel and so on) as well as their consistent release discography. (Massively relevant, as Mateus lacks discography, Ichika has good discography but far less relevant nowadays and far less innovative now compared to his earlier works.)

For the sake of condensing the video, I tried to make my points quick and to the point. This ranking didn't have consistent metrics because if I thought about it too much, I'd end up moving everyone around. Tim and Polyphia have indeed helped build a foundation for a majority of the styles we associate with modern guitar. My main focus was to just rank in terms of what I've been enjoying the most lately and this list very closely resembles that. Objectively, Tim has undoubtedly done a lot for the instrument, but that wasn't a measurement I wanted to tie too heavily in my ranking since I wanted to make it MY list not an objective one.
      Great comment, I appreciate it!
Also the clip for Manuel wasn't meant to be referenced by my claim about technicality.

I've been learning riffs from both of those guys recently, and man oh man Manuel's stuff is way harder to get down in my experience. Plus, I love how he experiments with super weird/unique tones. Seeing that you included Tremonti in this video, I'm curious where you would have placed Synyster Gates. I would say I probably see Syn the way you see Tremonti in that he's more of a traditional sort of player that's been around for a bit, I just don't listen to Tremonti's bands nearly as much as I do A7X

The thing with Ichika Nito that I've noticed is how absolutely precise his use of counterpoint is. Not like baroque counterpoint, but the way he creates his melodies and voicings have an amazing sense of propulsion and nuance. Even his older works like "i miss you", there's alot to digest in the A section alone that teaches a lot about how to harmonize a simple melody without using similarly structured chords on every note (and transcribing it is a bit of a pain :P). In that sense, I think he's one of the real modern landmarks in both technique and harmony.

Did you think about where they would have rated themselves? Did you look at the finished list, did that feel right? Did you consider how your followers will respond? I hope you haven't hurt yourself here. Do you know what it means in psychological terms to speak of yourself in the third person?
I follow your reasoning but a list like this might be titled something subjective like "Guitarists that I like to listen to". That being said if this was intended to get your audience to engage and comment well done. Putting yourself on the same level as Tim Henson is a bold move. It seems like you might have alienated your audience this time. I like to listen to your original music more than anyone on this list. so just because you can't digest the sound of what Tim does means that it is "too much" like come on lets be serious. so im assuming on songs like playing god you hear the bridge riff and your just like "this is too much and he's just showing off". its not that you put him in the B-tier , but solely alone for that reason is just really silly to me. you can use that point towards literally anyones music you think is "too technical". I could've made a tier list like that and put Tim at S-tier and Abasi at B-tier, and I put abasi B just because it's "too technical". At the same time I feel like you're trolling because respectfully ive never heard of mark travonti. im pretty sure Yvette's duck that is on covet's insta page has more respect in the guitar world than him.

@chaytoninsthere I absolutely LOVE Polyphia. Obviously this ranking isn't meant to be taken too seriously, but Polyphia is capable of creating some seriously INCREDIBLE tunes. I truly believe the band will continue to flourish, so I play the skeptic card in order to be met with the high standards I hold them to. Playing God is an all time favorite from them because I could really FEEL the music. Their guitar playing has improved immensely but it comes through as almost robotic. That doesn't mean the music is bad because it is far from that, but it's missing that extra umph that they used to consistently deliver.

It seems like a lot of Tim Henson fans didn't grasp what you meant by saying that he's sometimes technical for the sake of being technical. This is absolutely true, and there is no finer display of this than the song Ego Death.
The song has such a dramatic emotional shift when Vai makes his entrance that it actually starts to sound like a song instead of someone making an intricate composition on FruityLoops.
I think Polyphia has started isolating fans because their music as lost a bit of soul power. Listen to Polyphia's "Finale" compared to a lot of stuff they put out these days.
I'm not saying their most recent jams are all bad, just sound way more mechanical and too pristine to actually emulate human emotion or experience.

I'm not mad about the rankings tbh. It's nice to see Tremnoti get some praise bc it seems like the current generation isn't very aware of him. Alter Bridge was my fav band for several years as a teenager during the Blackbird/ AB III era before I branched out to more diverse music. I came back around on them tho, their new album was one of my fav releases last year. Also not saying he invented the concept at all but he was part of a big epiphany for me in regards to solo arrangement when I noticed how he often starts by reprising a melody from earlier in the song.
I could easily go overboard typing a paragraph for everyone on the list, and even a few who I feel should be but get overlooked, but I'll stop myself lol
My only criticism of the list tho would be Tremonti also make too much similar music to me, which is your reason for rating your lowest tier.

I agree with everything else in the s tier. Though, ichika is mostly popular for riffs he uploads to TH-cam (which sound amazing), but I don't feel like the things he's released have spread and impacted the music/guitar scene the way other guitarists like Tim Henson have and I feel like his stuff sounds kind of similar. I feel like polyphia is a bit much sometimes too and while I don't know if I would say that polyphia is an s tier band, Tim Henson has had a huge impact among guitar players and a lot of people want to sound like him and that speaks a lot. I'd probably put Tim Henson s tier and maybe ichika a tier.
Also I respect what you have to say about Yvette young, but she's my favorite guitarist. She may not do all the techniques like Tim Henson or shred like Jason Richardson, but watching the way her fingers just dance so gracefully on the neck is so captivating and the most inspiring thing I've ever experienced. I have a new appreciation for everything I listen to and everything hits differently ever since I started listening to covet and Yvette Young. Also I don't think everything sounds the same necessarily. Their latest album is less note-heavy than their first two eps. Covet also has some songs that definitely are a little more proggy (why I got into them at first) but they're primarily a math Rock band and that genre is just not super edgy. A lot of math Rock in general is just mellow music with a lot of notes and not much beyond that relative to prog and metal. Whether you dig that or not just depends on the listener I guess (covet resonates pretty deeply with me personally so I have some bias lol).

If we’re ranking them as composers, My S tier would have to be Plini, Henson, Scott, and Ichika.
Pure musicians, my S-tier would be plini, Asato and Yvette. I think Tim and Scott are incredible guitarists and composers, but I think they go in the A tier only because they don’t seem to be the same level with their improv. Ichika isn’t my favorite, but I think he deserves an S tier as well.
Pure technical skill for guitarists, my S would have to say Richardson, Plini, Tim and Scott, MGF, and Ichika. Jack Gardiner and maybe Owane also come to mind.
I think the only guitar who is S tier in all of those categories for me is Plini. I think the only area he might be weak in (compared to other guitarists in the same tier) would be pure technical skill. I think even he would might say that he couldn’t keep up with Richardson’s technicality. Like if you listen to interview with Beato, I think even he says he’s not a super technical guitarist.

Heres my take, ive listened to all of these musicians for at least 5 years now, and i am very familiar with their abilities and styles.
Ichika nito - S tier. Taking into account his bands,( ichikoro, the jpop one,) his sound is incredibly varied and he can play like 5 instruments proficiently. Favorite Songs: Ninja, Samurai, Arpeggios
Jason Richardson - A tier, this guy was the first step in my journey to being a prog jazz nerd. He is INCREDIBLY fast and accurate, with some interesting rythym patterns here and there. I agree that his style is pretty bland which is why I put him in A tier, but as far as shreddy music goes, he does it better than most compositionally. Favorite songs: Titan, Omni, Mirrors
Tim Henson - B tier. this is the guy that got me start playing guitar, who i discovered through Jason Richardsons collab with polyphia, aviator. He can write hooks really nicely and has great ability but suffers from a couple things. In polyphias music I feel they overprocess their best riffs. When tim released the rich kids riff before nlnd came out that was the coolest thing i had ever heard musically up to that point, and i couldnt wait for the song to come out. But when it finally did the processing kinda ruined the vibe. Some of his best work doesnt make into polyphias repetoire. God Hand is really good, but its just a thump excercise for him. He also plays REALLY sloppy live which can probably be attributed to a couple things:
    A. tim has admitted he writes music just beyond his capabilities in order to improve himself. Thats how became so good, but it makes the music hard to pull off live.
    B. im like 90% sure the dude gets stoned before he performs lol
His style is for the most part fairly repetitive, with a few hidden gems here and there, overall A tier. Favorite songs: God Hand, Bloodbath, Aviator
    Mark Tramanti - idk tier
Ive never actually heard of this guy, finna go check him out now
Yvette Young - easy S tier. She has to be one of the most underrated musicians of all time. She had the hook writing ability of tim henson but with none of the overtechnicality. She plays mostly fingerstyle (incredibly based). I completely disagree that her music all sounds the same. Go listen to her solo piano album (especially jolt) and her accoustic album, they are completely different from covet. Yvette plays piano REALLY well on top of her insane guitar skills (again, go watch her play jolt) She can play VIOLIN really well, and she can SING really well (while she plays difficult guitar riffs). She often plays her guitar in all kinds of different tunings to make certain not often heard chords in guitar centric music more prominent, which is super refreshing. My favorite songs from her: Jolt, Sea Dragon, Howl.
Mateus Asato - A tier. His playing is the most clean ive ever heard, and incredibly satisfying to watch. I just wish he would write more music.
Plini - A tier, he stuffs so many styles into his music, and it doesnt sound forced. Writes with unvonventional rythyms and chord often. Favorite songs from him: Opening, Salt + Charcoal, Flaneur.
Tosin Abasi: S tier. My favorite guitarist of all time, this guy is an absolute monster. The dude can play like jason richardson, but he has backgrounds in Jazz and Classical music and technique and it really shows in his music. The Joy of Motion is THE BEST album EVER released by ANYONE in my opinion. Animals as Leaders really shines when they stray away from the heavy metal and go full prog jazz mode. For that reason, Parrhesia was actually my LEAST favorite album from them.
Tosin abasi can shred like a maniac, Adapted victor wootens slap techniques to guitar, creating thumping, and on top of a that he can fingerstyle with the best of them and create harmonically rich chord structures and rythym patterns. My favorite songs: Air Chrysalis, The Future That Awaited Me, The Brain Dance.
The last guy on ur list was another idk tier, never heard of him.
Some guitarists i think shouldve been on this list but werent:
    Jakub Zytecki
    Mario Camerena
    Erick Hansel
    Javier Reyes
    Joshua de la Victoria

    Here's the changes I'd make:
    - Move Ichika from S tier to A tier. While he is one of the most impressive players I've seen, I personally feel like he suffers from this "stuck in a box" feeling with all of his music and riffs. I honestly don't enjoy listening to his videos that much anymore. I'd say once every 10 videos I see something I like, but that's about it. Don't get me wrong, he's incredibly talented, I think he writes astoundingly beautiful melodies, but his sound just doesn't strike me as memorable every single time. It's only riffs like "I miss you" and "Exotic" and "Heaven Metal" that really stick with me.
    - Move Scott LePage from B tier to A tier. I really feel like people don't give him credit where credit is due, and that's mostly because, as said in the video: he doesn't have that much solo content to go off of. Unlike Tim, who's style is very non-linear (not quite dynamic, just non-linear), Scott maintains the more traditional, flowy sound which creates incredibly pleasing motifs and riffs. I wouldn't say he's a better player, but that is style isn't as unnecessarily technical at times.
    - Move Mateus Asato from A tier to S tier. I'm just going to say this flat out: Mateus is probably one of the most talented guitarists I've ever seen; he plays every riff so smoothly that you can just tell he's capable of so much more. He doesn't need to play many notes to create something memorable, just like Plini, who I agree deserves his S tier spot. Mateus is underrated mostly because there isn't a lot to go off of in terms of technicality, but what might sway your opinion is his video where he shows his guest feature on Polyphia's song "Drown". You can really see how smoothly he plays those runs and movements. He's an amazing guitarist.
    - Finally, move both Jason and Yvette up from C tier to B tier. I agree with your reasonings, but C just feels a little too harsh. Jason has been branching out a lot recently with "p00mbachu", "Ishimura", and "Upside Down" at least, I think. I mean, his playing may sound too similar, but his riffs are incredibly memorable, in my opinion. As for Yvette, her ability to play so dynamically and create such vibes, even if they suffer from the same similar-ness as Jason, are still very memorable. Also, she can sing, play piano, and play violin. So like... I dunno, I feel like placing her in C is selling her a little short. I don't think any guitarist on here is any less than B tier, truthfully.
If Sithu Aye and Misha Mansoor were on this list, I'd put both of them in A tier. Both of them share stylistically different, but equally stunning riff writing abilities. Misha's ability to create absolutely amazing djent riffs, and Sithu's ability to create some of the most ear-pleasing jazzy motifs (that always include the lick) are nothing short of crazy.
Of course, feel free to disagree with me, this is all subjective, yk? Great video all in all, and I agree with a lot of what you said.

@@monfloral would it be fun to make a video about how unfair is that most guitarists presented there, don’t have the audience and engagement they deserve, so therefore they don’t get payed as much as they really worth?
I respect hard work and pure innovation, that’s why I would never dare to place any of them anywhere under GOD LIKE TIER. Something generally true is that Yvette is one of the first guitarists taking guitar to new levels, nobody will ever have the same power, precision and passion as Manuel Gardner Fernandes, and business wise, Tim Henson did what no other guitarist did before and still I consider him underrated and underpaid. Time will pay its debts to this artist💎

Overall good list. I agree that Tim and Scott are B tier, but for a different reason. I agree they are boxed in, but being boxed in is not a bad thing, lots of great guitarists stayed the same and never 'improved' (ie Eddie Van Halen). I think they need to work more on songs, they dont need to change the way they play, just expand to have more songs.
