People who think Tosin is just playing techniques instead of music haven’t heard much music. They may have spent a lot of time listening to what they like, but animals as leaders is much easier than a lot of contemporary music. He uses rhythms and harmonies you don’t find elsewhere because it sounds super cool! He’s constructing moods etc. he’s expressing HIS voice and creating something unique. It’s exactly why they’re as popular as they are, you can’t really get what they’re doing anywhere else.

As a progressive metal enjoyer I can agree that his music isn't really enjoyable, at least most of it. I honestly don't really like to listen to most of his Djent messy songs, they just sound like a bunch of technicall shit and odd times signatures for the sake of it and I honestly end up getting ear fatigue listening to a complete LP of Animals as Leaders. But then they have songs like Para Mexer, The Brain Dance and Apeirophobia that I really enjoy and I honestly wish they made more like these jazzy/classical styled ones.

I guess im rare but ive enjoyed everything they've put out since I found out about them guitar magazine i believe 2011

The thing with Ichika Nito that I've noticed is how absolutely precise his use of counterpoint is. Not like baroque counterpoint, but the way he creates his melodies and voicings have an amazing sense of propulsion and nuance. Even his older works like "i miss you", there's alot to digest in the A section alone that teaches a lot about how to harmonize a simple melody without using similarly structured chords on every note (and transcribing it is a bit of a pain :P). In that sense, I think he's one of the real modern landmarks in both technique and harmony.

I'm not totally sure what you are arguing, it seems like you are implying that the music is secondary to the unconventional techniques and niche maxing type thing he is doing. But I think their music has some of the most substance to it than any metal I've heard. In fact, any music I've heard in modern times full stop. I don't like every song, but the hits are always so incredibly good and have rich intricate melody's and everything. If anything, I would say Polyphia seems to lack musical substance in my opinion. And is mostly gimmick

I've been playing electric guitar for 56 years. The only progress I have noted is that proficiency has improved a lot and equipment has developed. All the rest: taste, intuition, innovation, etc., hasn't changed. It was always there and always will be, I imagine. There'll always be beginners with bloody fingers, people with no timing, Flash Harrys, naturals, play-by-number workmen (i.e.: cover musicians) and those that defy physics. Nothing "modern" in any of that.
