    Interesting take! What gain structure on the rear of the amp are you using? Maybe I missed it in your video

      Glad you got something out of it. I only mentioned the Gain Structure switch really quickly right before going over the amp settings. Should have dwelled a little longer on that because it does matter. Anyway, I'm using the middle (Matt Scofield) position, which is the most gain at input. I could have gotten a little less mid going thru the Blackface position but wanted to show off the mid-range.

    Yours isn’t the first video I’ve seen where recording a Two Rock changed the player’s mind. This was an awesome video, thanks for putting it together. I own the amp and find other people’s opinions and fav settings interesting.
    On a different note I don’t understand all the hate on this video, some people just love to hate I guess.

      I'm so glad you enjoyed the video. And I'm definitely stoke I finally found a good purpose for this amp. If you have any fun settings for the SS I'd love your opinion. As far as the hate, I get it a little I guess. It's hard for some folks to spend soooo much money on something and then have someone talk smack about it. Some people love Two-Rock the way some people love the NY Yankees. A rabid fan base. Not the first time for me, and definitely not the last, consider my particular temperament 😂 Thank for the comment 🙏🏻

      @ I find myself really liking the middle Schofield setting, bright and mid switches on, deep switch off, bass around 10, mid and treble around noon, presence around 11. I like the master and input gain both around noon. I bought the head and closed back 1x12, which is a smaller cabinet overall than the standalone 1x12 open back that’s more standard. I prefer running the head through my victory 2x12 (open back with a greenback and anniversary speaker in it) and I also have the two rock 3x10 cab that sounds excellent with the studio sig as well. I should also mention I’m apartment living now so I’m using a Fryette ps-2a on flat settings to mitigate overall noise so I don’t get evicted.

    I own one of these and didn’t like it for the longest time. I stumbled onto the magic of the deep switch and from there found a way to the bouncy crispy feel of a blackface. To my ears, the deep switch just scoops out the low mids and gives it a more similar sound to a blackface fender. I turn the bass to the left and keep the treble and mids straight up.
    One difference for me is that I’ve found running the gain low and the master high to be the less desirable setting. When I crank the gain the crispy highs and bouncy feel come into play and the bright switch makes a lot less of an impact.
    My point being, if you own one of these, using the deep switch and balancing the gain/master to taste is the key to getting it to sound less muddy and mid city.
    I also feel that changing the power tubes helped open the amp up, tonally. I’m using RCA black plates. The stock tubes were the TAD black plate reissue model, which I find a bit boxy and muddy in comparison, also more stiff.

    • @TheSoundCoop
      @TheSoundCoop  หลายเดือนก่อน

      This is such a great post! Thanks for taking the time to write this out 🙌🏻 I really appreciate you pointing out the power tubes. There's sooo many little things that can be done to totally change an amps response. "Stiff" is definitely a word I'd use to describe the Two-Rock. I might just try messing with power tubes. Just plugging the amp into a different cab made a huge difference. I have more experimenting to do 🙏🏻

      @@marquee-moon I genuinely appreciate the ribbing. And it's not like you're the only one mentioning it. 🤣 It didn't really occur to me that I'd come across as snobby, but it's totally fair. These Amps are ridiculously expensive. And I should keep this kinda thing in perspective when making videos. I'm a blue collar guy and come from no money. So I truly wanna make videos for these types of folks. I should have been more mindful about how inaccessible these amps are for lots of people. But if you're ever in the Bay Area, lmk and you can come take the Two-Rock for a spin. I'm not totally sure it's right for everyone. And there's sooooo many high headroom options these days. The California Tweed and Fillmore from Mesa Boogie are ridiculously solid. And it's really hard to beat an AC30 for clean vibes. Regardless, I appreciate the chat 🙌🏻

    One thing to consider is that the "thing" that makes it record well also makes is EXTREMELY good in a band setting. You don't need to push it or keep it loud to really stand out and effortlessly move between backing off for rhythm and stepping forward in the mix just with playing dynamics.

    As an amp builder myself, I have found that mid forward amps are easier to tune. When you scope the mids, the bass gets too boomy, and the highs just get shrill. Another thing that sets mid forward amps apart is how they interact with speaker options. My finding is that mid forward amps, don't always get along with single 12" guitar cabs. Send it through a 2 x 12", or a 4 x 12" and it suddenly get YUGE sounding. The mids become less forward, while the bass and treble catch up. I really tried making a mid scooped amp I would be happy with, and I just couldn't do it. So I don't even have a mid control option on my amps. It is non-interactive bass and treble cut circuits. The mids are tuned out in teh design, and you can use the bass-cut and hi-cut circuits to leave the desired amount of mids present.
    Another thing that is huge for guitar amps, especially mid-forward amps, is the speaker choice. You really have to find the right speaker, and it is even more difficult with single 12" cabinets. I shoot for an amp that fills the room with full bottom end, sweet highs and a mid range that says I have BALLS. They say that highs are next to godliness, I say that mids are what makes you stand out. You need just enough bass to sound full, and you need a lot of it when you are dimed!!!

      @@atech9020 thank you so very much for taking the time to write all that. There's soo much good stuff here and I appreciate your perspective. You're kinda confirming a few suspicions I've had. I recently got a Cali Tweed head and matching 2x12" cab. Plugin the Two-Rock SS Head into that cab is way more pleasant to play through for several of the reasons you mentioned. Another thing that's funny is how much faster the amp breaks up going into the 2x12" Cali Tweed cab vs the 1x12" TR cab. If I dial in some decent input gain on the amp, it'll sound completely clean through the 1x12" Two-Rock cab but edge of breakup through the 2x12" California Tweed. Not sure if it's the speakers that make that difference, or how many? But it's not subtle. I've long heard the metal guys banging on about how much the speaker effects the amp. Haven't really experimented myself. But definitely thinking about trying some speaker swapping. It's a rather inexpensive thing to try, all things considered. Thanks for sliding thru and keeping the comment section fun. I appreciate ya 🙌🏻

  • @jamesemerson4102
    @jamesemerson4102 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    Two-Rocks have always been very mid forward and I've found them mostly to be Strat or a Tele amps. The Bloomfield Drive is the only Two-Rock I have ever played that sounds any good with humbuckers as well as other guitars. Humbuckers just sounded really flabby, dark and generally crap with my Two-Rock studio pro and also really uninspiring with my Classic Reverb Sig. I found the mid forward thing works really well if you have a strat with really low output single coils, or a tele with vintage style pickups, but overall I found the mid thing just very irritating as well after a while. You just lose clarity, and the mids that the Two-Rocks have are not the mids that cut through the mix, they're a low and thick mid frequency that just seems to get in the way. If you play a strat with low output pickups and want to thicken them up then these amps are a good match, but I've never got along with any of them and sold both my two-rocks. They also have a lot of filtering and have a really stiff sound about them that I don't like. The Bloomfield is the exception and I think it's the best amp they have ever made. Gives you vintage fender and Marshall tones and sounds good with any guitar. I ended up getting a Carr Rambler combo which is basically like a vintage deluxe reverb and it has harmonics for days and sounds clear and bell like.

    I can’t my two rock to sound the way I want it. Too muffled and it makes a lot of buzzing noise just on and not playing anything.

    • @TheSoundCoop
      @TheSoundCoop  หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      The buzzing noise isn't normal at all. I'm not tech savvy enough to troubleshoot but contact Two-Rock. They will sort you out. Maybe a tube gone bad.
      It sounds like your experience with the Two-Rock is very similar to mine. Did you like the sounds in this video coming out of the mic at all? Or were those even two mid-rangey for you? I'm really happy with how this thing sounds in front of a microphone. But if I didn't do Studio recording, I would absolutely be sending this amplifier on to a new owner. I recently got a Mesa Boogie California Tweed and it's really been doing it for me lately when playing in a room with it. It does the black face Fender thing very well. And then if you crank the input gain, you can get everything from that two rock mid-range thing all the way to full on Tweed mid-range breakup. It's a pretty versatile amp and a fraction of the price compared to even the lowest level Two-Rock.
      One more thought. Have you tried plugging the amplifier into a different cab or speaker? I hadn't bothered doing this until I got the Mesa Boogie speaker cab recently. But when I plugged the Two-Rock into the Mesa Boogie cab with two 12s I instantly liked it way better. I don't know if it's the two speakers versus the one speaker in my TR cabinet, but it made a big difference. It reached breakup faster going into the Mesa Boogie cab than it did into the Two-Rock cab. Which was kinda surprising. Again, I'm not tech savvy enough to understand why this would be but I'm starting to learn speakers make a pretty massive difference in the tone. Of course, this is old news to seasoned amp vets. But I'm definitely not that 🤣

    For consideration in future videos - using all of the pickup selections and tone pots on your guitar would provide a broader listening perspective.

If I buy any piece of gear at a premium, is the expectation that I should automatically love it? This doesn't make any sense. There 's hundreds of amp manufacturers for this exact reason. Not everybody likes the same stuff. And I'll still take any one of my other amps over the Two-Rock in the room any day of the week. It's simply a realization that this thing has a utility I hadn't previously understood. A Marshall Plexi is an awesome clean high headroom amp. So is an AC30. So is a Two-Rock. So is a Dr Z. So is a Fender Twin Reverb. Are all these amps the same clean high headroom vibe? Should everybody love the most expensive of these over the rest? Kamman and knock it off 🤣

      The low mids is the best part of the amp. If you play a hotrod deluxe ect in a music shop the lowend sounds amazing then the moment you play with a band the low end is gone and your left with this thin harsh sounding horrible tone. That's because there's a bass and kick and keys ect taking up that frequency real estate. The Studio Pro 35 is the first amp that ever had real lowend in a mix. I've literally never played an amp where you put all the dials at 12 o'clock and the amp sounds killer. Guitar lives in the midrange. If you smileyface it you're removing yourself from the mix imo.
