How to make watercolour bookmarks - little slices of landscape

- Be warned, making watercolour bookmarks can be quite addictive! Why? Well, they are quick to do, so perfect if you are short of time. They are perfect for experimenting with new techniques or trying out new colours in a more imaginative way than simply swatching. They make great presents/gifts. If something works on a bookmark it can be scaled up into a painting. You can use them as a gentle introduction to mixed media. It's a super way of practicing your line and wash mark making. And who doesn't like a tassel?
Tassels can be found here (affiliate link) amzn.to/3KFXI5M
These are links to the pens I am using and Ohuhu have just offered 10% off if you use the code LizChader10 ( until 14 July 2024)
The Ohuhu watercolor markers: bit.ly/3wxFr7w
The arylic pens: bit.ly/4bhOtEP
The fineliners: bit.ly/3UV0YAh
I'm using a little pad of bookmark paper from Hahnemuhle, but of course it is easy enough to cut up watercolour paper. I used Ohuhu acrylic markers and fineliners, but use whatever supplies you have to hand. A little watercolour and a ballpoint pen will work! This is a link to the pad:artsupplies.hooluh.co.uk/hahn...
They should be sealed before use to prevent any paint getting on your book should you spill some water. I like to wax them using Dorland's wax, but you could use any clear wax medium or even wax designed to go over chalk paint. You can also use an acrylic varnish.
You can find the Ohuhu acrylic markers here: www.eu.ohuhu.com - they are great and here is a full review I did after this film: • How good are these Ohu... .
The bookmark pad came from here: artsupplies.hooluh.co.uk/hahn...

I love painting bookmarks! I make them and give them to our local library to gift to people...
That's a great idea!
That's a nice thing to do .😊
OMG! I love painting bookmarks and have a stack of them with plastic sleeves and tassles. Had no idea what to do with them! Thanks for a fantastic idea!!!
Lovely!
Oh, great idea!
I have my art class make bookmarks for little gifts to our church members. The class never feels intimidated because of the size. Yours are delightful, Liz
What a lovely idea. Yes, you can't find a tassel intimidating either!!
i made one painting on A5 paper and cut it into 4 bookmarks 😊
yes! you don’t get the border but that’s a personal taste thing….
@@LizChadertonArt I don't like white showing in my paintings 😊 I have the opposite of the fear of the white page 😁
@@shreevas6160 In that case, the perfect result!
I tend to cut up “failed” paintings into bookmarks and I cover them in sticky back plastic. I’m going to make a border on mine next time like yours. Thanks for the video. X
I love these bookmark ideas.
I’m totally new to watercolor and looking for ideas to get started!
Thank you!!
they are addictive!
This is exactly what I needed for my troubled soul :)))
Thank you a thousand times, dear Liz💛🧡❤
I hope it soothes xx
Thank you for the tips. I add calligraphy quotes about reading on the back of mine.
That's a great idea!
I just found you and the bookmarks and I’m in love with both! You are so kind and informative, and the bookmarks are so fun!! Mine didn’t look like much at first, but the more I drew and put in, they actually came to life! Can’t stop!!💗
Watercolour paintings that I don't like, I cut up in smaller pieces to use as bookmarks. Then I can feel good about using the paintings instead of just throwing them away.
yes! great idea
I love that monochromatic one ❤
thank you!
Nice! Mini paintings like bookmarks are a great way to try a new medium without feeling like you're going to "ruin" a whole sheet of expensive paper. Thanks.
So true!
I would love to see these famed and hung side by side ...quite lovely, actually and great fun for people to go and inspect what they are. The colours will draw them in and the detail will make them smile!
I think they could be worked up into a bigger painting…
❤❤❤ I love this channel! What a refreshing idea. What a sweet painter!
Thank you so much!
I like this size. It's less intimidating as a beginner. Thanks for sharing!!! ❤️🫂✨
You are so welcome!
Thank you, I love them. I used to love watching you on shop keep arty during the pandemic. That's how I found you, I'm glad you have your own channel now.
yes, that helped get me through too
I love these tips for making your beautiful bookmarks. May I respectfully add that if you cut your own out of a watercolor pad, the paper is considerably less costly. The big "A" online retailer charges almost $20 for that little pad of 15 bookmark sheets. Thanks for sharing your talents with us. Your artwork is beautiful.
This popped up on my feed and I’m glad it did. Great idea for a newbie to art and watercolour ☺️
it’s a really nice no-pressure project and you Learn lots,!
These are delightful! As are you!
oh thank you!
These are beautiful bookmarks! Easy to make, quick thoughtful gift ideas! Thanks so much for the inspirational video!
You are so welcome!
I love these bookmarks. Thank you for explaining what you do.💕
my pleasure!
I love this! I've been painting in WC for a long time and I've never seen this done before. You do a beautiful job.
Thank you so much!
I am quite pleased your tutorial appeared in my feed today. I too enjoy creating bookmarks and have many on hand but none look like yours which is why I’m pleased to see your wonderful ideas. You are a lovely person and am grateful you have shared these awesome ideas. Thank you kindly.
You are so welcome!
Lightly rub the tape on the clothing you are wearing to dull the sticky to prevent tearing the paper
I usually do and warm it with a dryer to loosen the glue 😀
thanks for the tip April
Yes! Thank you,,a good idea.
Or use washi tape! Or even painters tape.
Thank you for sharing your creative gifts with us Liz! You are a treasure! You have been so helpful on my creative journey. A precious gift from God and a delight to His heart and so many others!
That is such a lovely thing to say. Thank you
Such a nice idea, thank you for sharing these techniques and ideas for supplies.
You are so welcome!
Beautiul idea! And if you are not the "tassle type" you can also use a ribbon. Sometimes I cut off the ribbon loops that are sown into clothing at the neck. I have actually used a blue one for a bookmark.
that’s a good idea. Are there really non-tassel people??😆
Wow. Here I go again. You have hooked me. This looks like so much fun. I think it would also make a great on the go project. Thanks for sharing.
Go for it!
These are wonderful a great size as I have limited space ! and A lovely idea ..Thankyou 😍
Glad you like them!
What a beautiful set of bookmarks! This is such a great idea for when you want to produce something beautiful and unique to give away. 😍
It really is!
Hi Liz, just found you. Your bookmarks are great. I love all the different ideas you give. Thank you!
Thank you so much!
How beautiful and simple. It is just lovely to create something small and uncomplicated. So satisfying. You have inspired me. Thank you!
Sometimes simple is all you need
What beautifying miniature at works, Liz and a great idea for all sorts of occasions. ❤
they are addictive, so I’ll be sneaking into the library to leave them in books…..
Lovely video, and thanks for the tip about the wax, I’ve never heard of it before.
You’re welcome 😊
Thank you for all your tips & techniques for watercolor bookmarks. I'm going out to get Dorland's wax since I really didn't want to put them in a plastic bookmark sleeve or laminate mine! Great idea.
yes, I don’t like the bookmark sleeves either
I already started looking for materials to start making my own like these. 🎉 Thanks so much for the tutorial and the fun ideas. ❤
You are so welcome! I’m doing another on Sunday….
@@LizChadertonArt I’ll look for it!! 🙌🏻🥳🤩
What a brilliant idea! I love doing ‘mini’ things and this completely appeals, thank you! I fancy doing a seashore themed set….and a flower garden….😊
ooh, nice ideas
Wonderful idea for little gifts. I am inspired to pick up my brush. It’s small enough project to begin without getting overwhelmed. Thank you❤
..and little boys…
I love these layered landscape bookmarks. I am always looking for new ideas for my watercolor and mixed media bookmarks.
Glad you like them! a bit of collage would be lovely too
Thank you for all the tips, I love bookmarks! Looking forward to your next video :)

What a neat project. Love it! It's right up my alley. ❤
hurray!
Lovely project!
Thank you! 😊
Beautiful! These look like so much fun. I’m learning about watercolor painting, would love to do some practical practice, and I know of a charity that gives “happy marks” to kids in either foster care or hospital, can’t remember which! But either way, perfect!
perfect!
So much fun and easy! Thank you so much! Love them!
You are so welcome!
I've always picked up book marks that I find that strike a cord with me. I never thought about making them myself. I've made many with children. I think I will give this a go and give them to the local library. With summer fast approaching there will be numerous activities for children at the library.
Thank you.
Wonderful!
I’ve been using them both for testing things as you say and as warmup to build confidence
Great fun
Great to hear!
This is lovely
thank you!
3:08 punch another hole on the other side and attach two more tassels! Thank you for the inspiration x
😆 super tassel action! great idea
Bookmarks are my thing! I love the way you took the blue and yellow and made the house and then front with a fence. Now that was great imagination!!
Glad you like them!
I love these. 👍🏻👍🏻
thank you so much!
Been thinking of making Bookmarks, this popped up and made up my mind. Thank you 😊
scary how that happens, isn’t it? Blooming algorithm!
This is a great quick project! I love them! Thank you so much!
they are very addictive!
I am going to give it a go.
I hope you enjoy it!
I absolutely love them! Will definitely give these a try!
please do and share the result
Love your fearlessness with the colours!!
the joy of these little pieces is they are not intimidating and you have nothing to lose
I was recently asking in my art class how to preserve watercolor art! Thanks for telling us about the wax! And thanks for great instruction . Going to look to buy a bookmark pad!

They're lovely
thank you so much
Amazing. Really lovely. Thank you 🦋
Thank you so much!
BTW - I love this idea and the tutorial is marvelous.
thank you!
What a clever idea! Those are so nice!
Thank you! 😊
Thank you for explaining how you render them waterproof! Fixer plus wax. That was the first question I had at the beginning of your video and probably the reason that was keeping me from making bookmarks myself. Lovely creations you make. Thank you for all the inspiration you provide.
Glad it was helpful!
Loved this ! ❤
so pleased! I’ve done a couple more bookmark films too like this one th-cam.com/video/VSLNvrgxxqk/w-d-xo.html
What fun! Making something small is a great practice . Thanks for sharing!
It really is!
I bought these exact bookmarks last week! This looks like fun :D
They are!
Love them!!!! Thanks so much for sharing ❤❤
Glad you like them!
Perfect timing! You made my day!
I make smaller bookmarks to include with Christmas and occasion cards, and saw these large ones on Amazon. (Here's a Secret...joggles has them much less expensively)
Anyway, it was so relaxing watching you work. Thanks❤❤
(here’s a secret, would usually cut up scraps, but I got given these 😆)
Great video full of inspiration. Thank you❤
You are so welcome!
LOVELY 😍
you are so awesome creative with your talent 🎉
Thank you so much 😀
These are lovely Liz…thanks so much for sharing. This would be a great little project to take away with me in our motorhome. Have a great day 😊
perfect! won’t take much space
Exactly! I’ve just ordered the Hahnemuhle bookmark pad ready for our next trip!
pretty
thank you!
Great idea! Clear instructions thank you
Glad it was helpful!
These are great! i love all the patterns you've made. I love your idea on the wax to seal them! I was using a laminator but, they have to be put through many times and often pop off. Thank you!
Thanks so much! 😊
Thanks for MY new addiction! I’ve been making them using many styles. I put paint spatter on the backs. It lightens up those stark white surfaces. I am loving these!
@@ritaobrien9093 that’s a nice idea!
Excellent 😊
Thank you! Cheers!
This was brilliant! I love painting bookmarks but I’ve never done them like this! Thanks for the wax tip, I’ve been laminating them which increases their thickness :)
You are so welcome!
I ❤️ painting fruits, vegetables, stationary things, but landscapes seem to defy me. This will be my landscape outlet. Also, ❤️ the idea of stencils as I have a plethora!
Sounds great!
I love this idea.
I have a new job, with little time for painting at the moment but I think I could manage to squeeze these in.
Thank you 💛
I really love these. I’m trying to start real painting and drawing (I’m just doing Procreate art), and this would help me overcome my fear of beginning/failing.
It would be great to do a series of these - seasonal ones or some other theme. 🤗
That would be perfect
I subscribe and liked this video, thank you for this sweet and fun idea ❤
Yay! Thank you!
Thats great thank you very much for showing this , what a great idea and would make lovely gifts for people .
I sometimes but bookmarks for people but what a nice thing to do an original one personally for someone special.
You are very talented and inspiring .
Your paintings were beautiful 😊
thank you. I hope you enjoy making them
Neat, love the landscape effect! (Seems, I’m always look out over the horizon - what more, right!)
You and me both!
Hi Liz,
TH-cam suggested this video to me today and I am so glad it did!
What an amazing idea you had to create these beautiful bookmarks 💞
Thank you so much for sharing this project with us!
I am smitten with your watercolor art as well ❤
Sending hugs from SF Bay Area.
Thanks so much! 😊
OMG I ❤️ this! So glad you came onto my feed. New subscriber 🎉 Bought everything you recommended. Can’t wait to make bookmarks; can see why they’re addictive! The bookmark on the left where the blue is above Naples yellow-it looks like water reflection. So lovely. TYSM for sharing, Liz!! 😍🥰😘
what a lovely message!
These are fab. I make many bookmarks for our local Exmouth in Bloom to sell. I laminate mine.
great idea. I’ve done a few simple florals this week….
Regarding bits that seep under the tape … another option… using a marker create a design around it
that’s a good idea. Embrace the imperfection
Thanks!
ooh, thank you! That’ll get me a new pen 😀
Just found this and love it. I am am small project watercolor person and feel like I will use this over and over.
I’ve done a few book mark films so you might enjoy the others too
❤gracias
de nada!
I LOVE this idea! Thank you for sharing this Liz! How should we apply the wax? Do you wax all
Of your paintings? I’ve never heard of this wax protection before
you might enjoy this, it goes into more more detail: th-cam.com/video/5viz8wXzVhc/w-d-xo.html
Love these! I wonder if white wax crayon would work as a coating 🤔. I can't afford new supplies right now.
sadly not. It will crack. If you have a clear furniture wax or wax to go over chalk paint, that would work
@LizChadertonArt I have some beeswax furniture stuff I'll have to try that thanks 😁.
What a lovely idea! Thank you for the video. I've never used wax on a bookmark and wonder if it will leave marks on the book pages - what is your experience of this? Thank you and best regards.
it dries hard and doesn’t smear or melt. I’ve never had an issue!
@@LizChadertonArt So kind of you to reply - thank you!
Love the tassels do you have a link to those?
