  • Ever since been a very small boy I have had a passion for electronics, at the age of 17 , I found another passion for cars when I bought a Fiat 128 for just £50, which apart from the odd joy ride it never actually went on the road but it started me off on lifelong love affair for Fiat cars, at the end of this video I present my pride and joy, a Fiat I bought in 1991 when I was just 26 and I still have today . Michael Dranfield . 2021.

I have only ever restored two (2) cars in my whole lifetime (I'm 73). I was asked by an Italian Property developer, to completely strip & restore A ('68) Fiat Bambino, in 2004. Whilst out and about scouring scrapyards for parts, I came upon an absolute wreck of a 1971 Beetle, all burnt-out from an Engine Fire. I bought this Beetle from the Scrapyard, brought it home, and decided that I was going to restore both at the same time. The Fiat Bambino took almost a year, and the Beetle took 15 months. Today, this "scrapyard" Beetle is my pride & joy (quite by accident really). The Beetle (now owned 19 years), has been fully converted to Tesla model S Battery, and a 120HP Electric Motor, via a special DC to AC 3-phase Inverter. Beetle has taken-on a completely new character, since the completion of the conversion to EV. You would be ideally- suited to make one of your Fiats into an EV, because you have all those skills at hand. Even the Fiat Bambino has had the EV treatment, by Electric Classic Cars in Wales. I must tell you that my favourite Fiats are the Fiat 125. "The Sprinter in the Saville Row Suit", and also the very large Fiat 131. Greetings from Australia.

The reason there is not many Tipos left is they suffered from a similar problem to your beetle, a split petrol pipe would spray petrol onto the hot engine and a lot of Tipos were written off by this, mine was recalled in the day and found to be fitted with a modified pipe already, I had a 131 twin cam In the 80s very quick but they rusted even quicker than they accelerated!

Most TV engineers can do pretty much anything in my experience, I went from Radio to HiFi then TV/Video then Sat Tv then Microwaves then computers, now training as a Watchmaker.
We just love Tech and cars have always been an interest.

@@michaeldranfield7140 I saw the work in progress in your shop. You've got a large percentage of the remaining Tipo mk1's in this country! I've always rather liked them. A friend of mine had one. It wasn't one of the posher ones but it was very comfortable and respectably fast. It just surprises me how rare they've become. Not so long ago they were everyday street furniture and now you never see them.

Loving the TV repair workshop 😎👍
Fiat Punto 2007 1.4 petrol with the Fuzzi logic manual auto select gearbox ( robot gearbox electronic clutch)
Every time it rained kept getting fault codes up and no gear selection possible 😬
Invested in the brilliant Fiat diagnostics app in the Android play store ....
After clearing all fault codes & system reset with the app on me smartphone it cured gearbox faults until rained again 🤦‍♂️
Great little car except for the fuzzi logic auto gearbox allergy to rain 😱

Absolutely loved the tipos, my mum had a 1.4 model and was the first car I drove as a learner. Money was tight back then and I used to make my own stickers by tracing the logo from the owners manual and then cutting it out of white vinyl sheet! Of course the sound system was all kitted out with pioneer stuff and a graphic equaliser when I got my first job. My boys don't even know what they are. The bootlid was made from fibreglass which was troublesome with regards to the boot lock fixings. Otherwise bulletproof. Thanks for sharing.

I have another MK 1 but a 1.6 as well I am in the process of restoring , only reason I wanted a Tipo is it was the first Fiat to made from galvanised steel so I knew it would last and it certainly has .

Had a whole string of Fiats in the 80s when you could buy them for a couple of hundred pounds, a 127 sport could cost you up to 10K now, if you can find one.

I had a couple of Tipos, G828CVT and H279GVT. Both were 1.6 DGT models and the H reg one had power steering. The G reg one had a warranty repair and the cam belt slipped a few teeth while the main dealer was test driving it, because they didn’t assemble the top of the engine correctly. I think the cam sprocket had a key to lock it in the correct position and they forgot to fit it. I got a new replacement car as I refused to have the car back after they’d replaced the bent valves. Seeing your silver Tipo reminded me of it.

Tipo was the first fiat to use galvanised steel hence the longevity , in the 70 s the average life of a Fiat was 6 years before it rotted away, bet you wish you had some Tipos now !
