People are, but moving up the latter is a slow process. From one job jump to the one that is a step above. The problem comes when people want to be an engineer, chief scientist, economic advisor, health professional etc, without the proper qualifications.

For more basic jobs just a paragraph or less is fine. Someone hiring people for a $15/hr position doesn't care as much about all that. Just make sure to mention you are available, have transportation, and need to learn certain skills from that job to start your own business in the future (It may not be true for you but has worked great for me).

For my most recent job interview, though, I had to _literally_ go the extra mile and visit the company and then *clearly* tell them on the phone I was outside looking for someone to talk to. They replied after a few hours to schedule an interview.
I got the job within 5 days.

Actually I think a cover letter is only necessary if one, someone directly reaches out through email asking for your resume for a particular position. Even if they didn't ask, its best to include one because chances are you were referred for the position. The other reason is if there is a position you really think you are an absolute stellar fit or because you want to increase your chance of getting in. Other than that it doesn't make any sense because you have to change your cover letter for every new position/company. If companies are really interested in you, they will ask for an interview which highlights your strengths and weaknesses.

The example cover letter is very generic. You need to sound more interesting than this because 150+ other people applied for the same position and 70 of them have just handed in the same cover letter (obviously with their personal information.
    1. Be interested and show it.
    2. Find similarities with the company and your life. Values, interests, goals, etc... and relate.
    3. Put effort into it.
    4. Make sure it has good readability and flow.
    5. Get a really good understanding of the company. What sort of company is it. What is their mission statement. What is their culture. If you can, find these things out and then it will give you an idea of how to write your cover letter. Then write it specifically to them and not the job - you don’t need a name here.
    6. IMPORTANT - if the hiring manager asks for specific things to be covered you absolutely must cover this. Pay attention to job listings.
The three paragraph concept is a good one to stick to, especially if you’re not too sure about your own writing. However, the rest will make you sound like everyone else.

    A small note:
The larger the company, the harder it is to find out who the hiring manager is. For example, if you're applying for a job at Microsoft, you're never going to find out who the hiring manager is. Also, in this same scenario, there is most likely going to be more than 1 person looking at your resume and involved in the interview process. That is especially true for tech positions where the manager is less hands-on and will need the help of his/her team to vet an applicant's knowledge. I've spent over 20 years in the tech industry and every resume/cover letter I've ever sent out has always started with "Dear Team" or "Hello Team" or something of that nature.

Job market here in the US is unbelievable right now. Jobs want you to have experience but in order to have that, you need to have a job. No jobs right now wants people who dont have experience in the field. Hence why its hard for a lot of people to get a job. Then there is the education system. I cannot go to college because I am considered a "dependent" even though I live on my own and make my own money. Its because I am under 24 and not married or dont have a kid. Therefore my student loans have to come from my parents who dont want to have an extra loan on them.

3:03 "accounts" needs an apostrophe at the end. Minor stuff, but important for demonstrating meticulousness and accuracy. It shows that you've gone over your work numerous times and are good at working out small disrepencies. Also, where "depth on my experience" is used, I might suggest "details of" or "details about". Depth, of course, cannot be "on" something. Depth is "in", and sounds awkward when used as a less specific placeholder when a more accurate word like "detail" could be used.

I hate cover letters. Nobody wants to read them and nobody wants to do it. Extra effort in these days where everything should be quick and easy.

Is it really appropriate (in the US or elsewhere) to address the hiring manager by name (in case i know it) if i never had a contact with her?
Maybe it's because english is not my first language, but it sounds kind of strange to me..

    • @kel3907
      @kel3907 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

I agree. Shouldn't this be addressed as Mr., Ms., or Mrs. and then their last name? I think by using someone's first name is a little too personal.

This is exactly what hundreds of websites online say to do. 100% generic. The catch-22 to this video is that if everyone did this to make their cover letters “stand out,” then nobody would stand out.
