In August 2023, 3M announced a $6.01 billion settlement to settle lawsuits over the Combat Arms Earplug litigation. The settlement includes $5 billion in cash and $1 billion in 3M stock. 3M has agreed to pay out the funds between 2023 and 2029, based on qualifying criteria. 3M has also offered to pay up to $1 billion in cash or stock if 98% of participants participate.
Individual payouts will vary between $7,000 and $700,000. The New York Times reported that plaintiffs might expect between $5,000 and $250,000, depending on the specific facts and circumstances of their case.
The lawsuits are filed by U.S. service members and veterans who suffered hearing injuries, including hearing loss and tinnitus, as a result of using 3M's earplugs.
