Ver interesting match, however very dificult to grade, due to such rapid movements.
Indeed a nice piece to study further.

No one commented about this, tho:
Is no one bothered by the fact that Ariga invited a convicted rapist (of his own student) to teach at his dojo?
Personally, I want to keep the personal life things off the court and I really admire Kim sensei's skills (this isn't shiai, both of them are being lazy and having a friendly keiko so no zanshin doesn't mean bad kendo). However, I find it strange how no one has mentioned or are privy to what Kim sensei has done.
If it makes Ariga or Kim look any better, this conviciton happened almost ten years before this clip was taken, and after (only) 3 years of hard labor punishment maybe Kim sensei has done things since then to repent? As a human being, I don't want to condone his actions, no matter how long ago it happened, but as someone who does kendo, I do want Kim, as a magnificent kendo player, to stay in the kendo field.

Well, it isn't really surprising - most people who hold phd's or doctorates aren't *also* Nobel prize winners - without any other comparison. Point being simply, that degrees are awarded on the basis of a grasp, understanding and ability in regards to the subject. Ability to apply in a certain way is something else, and requires seperate training. Most kendoists - 7th dan or not - do not have the extensive shiai/jigeiko experience, hours of technical training etc. that the competitive elite has.

I guess the greatest difference here is that this isn't shiai. One's mind and behaviour in shiai is completely different from one's mind in jigeiko. What would ariga sensei learn from this opportunity to battle kim sensei if he would not try to impose his own kendo? From my experience, I learn much more from being struck while I try to be calm and in control rather than trying the easiest ippon...

It might also be noted that one thing doesn't necessarily guarantee the other; both ways. I have met "weak" fighters who passed dan exams with no issue, and very strong fighters, who had to take 2 or 3 passes to get past this or that dan. Dan exams are *not* tests of martial prowess in a narrow sense of "combat", and as the term "sensei" denotes a *teacher* and not a fighter; it really is quite sensible. I don't think that Roy Jones Jr. or Mike Tyson would be the best boxing trainers either.

    I'm not sure....are both really 7. dan?
one gentleman's (Taro Arigao's) fighting skills looks at least 2 levels inferior to Kyung-nam Sensei's. Sensei is absolutely dominating Taro Ariga. maybe I'm just favoring Sensei.

What I belive is that Ariga Sensei is trying to keep kamae the best he could. Althought many see that Kim Sensei has more points scored, Ariga Sensei is definetly very srict to himself about not breaking kamae. Skill of shiai not always means the skill of kendo. Skill at shiai is only a potential product of good kendo. I believe that Ariga has his dan rank due to his originality of keeping good kamae and good posture even if he doesn't get the ippon.
    Thanks for reading

kendo is there for surviving ......in whatever environment you are.
if you can't hit the other, don't let the other hit you..........
Ariga sensei is doing neither of them.......... :-(

Kim Sensei is in lot better shape than Ariga sensei at this stage. A young Ariga Sensei would have given Kim a much better fight.

Kim should stop the arrogant behaviour. Like most of the other sports or martial arts, Kendo also starts and ends with YE (RE in Japanese).

Me! Me! Me! I am shiny! I enjoy when i win. I'm 7 dan but I haven't learned to respect, what seems to be a missing at fundamental level for such a high rank in martial arts.
