Low profile look so much better..the regular ones make my head looks huge..i feel silly wearing it.. something i do find a gem on the regular ones thats not as huge..but its a long hint to find one
Nailed this one. Glad you called it out. Ordered a low pro last month and had to return it. Looked exactly like the Seattle one you showed. Too low and round for my liking.
I am so glad to see this. I thought I was going crazy - I have had to return three low profile hats because it wouldn’t even go all the way onto my head. It looked downright silly. I think there is also a quality control concern with the low profiles too
Anyone else notice that the sizes on the 59fifty aren’t always the same? I wear a 7 5/8 and mostly fits perfectly but I have maybe 50 hats and probably 5 are tighter than the others. Great to see you back
Yes, New Era is notorious for inconsistent sizing. I wear 7 1/8 and have a few that fit like a 7 that needed to get stretched and some that fit like a 7 1/4.
I think it could be the inconsistency of New Era in general. I have four of the low profile 59fifty caps, and they all fit and look different. My most recent one, which was a mesh-back Nationals cap I purchased in 2022, is by far the tightest and has the lowest profile, so there may be something to it.
Man I love the low profile hats. Wish they did a lot more of custom designs in low profile. But I agree there has been some inconsistencies with them, sometimes they are perfect, sometimes they are too low and rounded, and I’ve even had a few that were almost too tall more like a mid profile
Doug, will you be doing future critiques on college/university hats on any of the divisions. I think you'd like my university's hats. I live in New Jersey, and I attend Rowan University, and our school colors are brown and gold. We have a large hat collection from 47 Brand and Legacy, which is the main manufacturer for college hats. I find that Legacy's hats are shallow but comfortable. 47 Brand is definitely the better of the two manufacturers in terms of comfort.
Not something I planned to explore, but I do have some collegiate hats by Zephyr and Top of the World... I actually like the Zephyr stretch fitted and might make a quick rundown on that one. Thanks for the question.
Yes I’ve noticed this big time on the low profile hats… I mainly buy low profile exclusively just because it looks way better with my head shape than the standard ones. And man are they bad nowadays. They just hug your head to the point it looks downright silly. Maybe 1 out of every 4 actually look acceptable now. It’s a shame because they had them perfect before and now it’s a crap shoot on whether it’ll look right or not.
Thank you! And the cap that's a little off-kilter on the shelf is actually a Sacramento Kings cap... it's been swapped out for a different one in my upcoming video!
II have noticed a difference as well. I have been checking recently on fanatics and noticed that the MLB on field hats in the discription say low profile and the NBA/Oceanside/Scarlett hats say middle crown. But that is only in the discription.
It feels like they've changed the sizing as well. A 7/14 from New Era 5 years ago used to be a little snug on me, now I'm swimming in them. Maybe its just me, but it seems like the quality dipped from New Era when they started putting their logo on the side.
I think the manufacturing site has a lot to do with the size variation - some are worse than others, and there's probably about 7-8 regular vendors (factories) that make caps for New Era these days.
Yeah, the low profile 9FIFTY is pretty much a new model. I first saw it this past October during the postseason for MLB. The official hats for the teams who won the NLDS and the ALDS were low profile 9FIFTY's. This is something that intrigues me as an adjustable hat and snapback lover because I do not like the high profile crown for the traditional 59FIFTY and 9FIFTY. I currently do not own a 9FIFTY, but if I ever do make that purchase one day, I will get a low profile 9FIFTY. Are you gonna upload a video where you purchase and critique it, Doug?
@dreinthe616 yeah, same here! I'm not as big on hat collecting anymore unless I do see one that I like a lot. Plus, I don't want to spend too much money on hats as much.
I'm curious to see if the reshaped Low Profile eats into the sales of the 39Thirty. I'm a fan of the 39Thirty's shape and construction, but I'm not a fan of it having a stretchy headband. The new LP 59Fifty for me is the perfect combination of shape and comfort.
I can relate to that - sometimes I think those stretchy back panels and sweatband actually detract from the comfort, and they make it a little harder to put on/take off.
Not that I've encountered so far - all are able to get the basic job done, and the wood blocks on most models can be sanded/shaped to custom needs. The one thing that could be nicer is the build quality of the turnbuckles I see - if it was a bit larger diameter and had nicer surface finish it would be a major refinement for me. Thanks for asking.
I must have big ears because almost any 5950 goes over my ears. I’ve tried the SnapBack and it’s a bit better as I can adjust but still looks better over ears. The 39rhirty fits well but it’s a stretch fit. Do you think the low profile 5950 would be good here?
Hey i got kind of a stupid question, but im getting into hats and bought a 59FIFTY. The circumference of it fits quite well the but the problem is that it touches/goes over my ears (its a bit too tall). will going down a size change the tallness of it or should I try a low profile?
I'm searching for help to change sweatband on a NewEra new heritage cap. Sweatband is polyester but I can only wear 100% cotton. Does anybody know who can help? I asked a normal tailor for help but they can't do it as it requires a stronger sewing machine. Thanks
Honestly I can't understand why they don't just make every hat available as a 39thirty or at least a 9forty... I'm in Australia and we get a really strange selection here - but I bought a bunch of 59fifties when they were on clearance before they were going to go back to the USA (dunno why Lids ever thought MLB caps would sell here)... but Lids stores actually don't stock 39thirties at all, like literally, 0. Online has a few but only City Connect hats... And this isn't just an Aussie thing... New Era doesn't make a lot of their hats as a 39thirty... but it's such a perfect shape.
For sure, I've got some 39Thirtys that I really love when in the mood for that silhouette - the bigger collections do seem to feature them more often now, but certainly not every style.
@@dreinthe616 Hi Doug - I've been slowly putting together what each hat is... and I was under the impression that a 39thirty and a 9forty were identical except that the 39thirty is stretch fitted and 9forty is adjustable (either snapback or velcro). Have I got this right? And is the 9twenty also like those, but with buckle adjustment and often cotton rather than polyester... or is that one a different shape?
@daysandwords Yes, I think you’ve gotten just about everything, except the big difference with the 9twenty - it’s an unstructured cap, so there’s no buckram in the front two panels. Definitely a classic dad cap - most similar to the ‘47 Brand clean up.
@@dreinthe616 Ah yep, cheers for that. I love that there are people out there who share my enthusiasm for baseball caps. In Australia it's rare that anyone except Lids employees even realises that there are multiple brands.
I think maybe you're asking about a 2024 version comparing all the major ones (e.g. 59Fifty, 39Thirty, etc.)? That's probably a good idea for me, but I'd also say some of the 'tweaking' is the natural result of changing manufacturing sites for different cap releases, thanks for the request.
I that it seems to have more to do with is what factory it is made at. It seems like the ones made in Bangladesh have the style more like the Seattle Mariners cap.
That's a good point that I did not mention in this video, but have studied more in other videos on the standard 59Fifty. I made one about manufacturing site differences, and another about the caps made in Bangladesh specifically - I am generally not a fan of them. I do not own enough LP caps to have a good data set, but can take a look when I do. ICYI the other vids can be found on my channel videos page, thanks.
Really? I think it’s opposite i noticed mine from Bangladesh have the slightly higher crown like the Philly one. i recently got a As one only one made in Vietnam i have and its tighter and lower crown hate it. Wish the descriptions would tell us where they are form before purchase
I actually really prefer the new low profile hats. Most of the regular crowns don't look good on my small head and often times feel as thought I'm wearing a top hat. The low profiles are the only ones I buy and that actually fit me appropriately.
I like the low pros, too. Many of the standard 59Fiftys look too big on my head. If the newer low profile is similar to the 39Thirty, I would be pleased. The shape of the 39Thirty is my favorite, but even the largest size is too small for my head.
Watch Doug’s other videos on shrinking the buckram on caps. The plastic inserts with steam are the best and that’s my go-to way to get my hats the way I like. I used to purchase low crown caps going all the way back to the 90’s but because of the profile issues that Doug spoke of I have had to stop. Now I get my 5950’s how I want them with a more rounded edge and not that bill board look.
I personally prefer the snug fit of the Low-Profile hats, I hate that empty space on my forehead. New Era does have issues with their sizing, I'm going back and forth between two sizes.
You should look up The Captician, located in the UK... best found on Instagram. Sells cap care kits and also does cap restoration too - and I've done videos in collaboration too.
I'm a low profile wearer and the quality control variation is insane. I ordered every SF low profile from last year and each one fits differently, even though they're all the same size. Crown shape, band sizing, bills are broken at times... New Era sucks
Agree - variation is a huge problem for them that only got worse as everything went to contract manufacturers... interesting you're seeing the same pattern with the low profiles.
Yeah, China/Laos and maybe some other factories usually have a deeper crown and imo fit how a 59fifty is suppose to fit. Caps made in Bangladesh have a shallow, boxier crown and in my experience fit tighter than China made caps.
@Brad4083 I know low profiles can fit different since they come slightly pre curved but I havent heard of factory inconsistencies with the low pros like the normal 59fifties.
I didn't focus on that with these caps, but I'm going to check tags... I would have to imagine that there's some effect, but I probably have too small a sample size to say they are as inconsistent as the Standard.

Yes absolutely
They’re handmade in a variety of countries and factories. Because of quality control issues the sizing can be inconsistent.
I did make a whole video about their size variation - here ICYI: th-cam.com/video/aeZ0olFQQyc/w-d-xo.html - thanks!

I also found this perplexing when I first encountered this phenomenon. Initially, I thought it was just another defect, but it seems to be a norm.

Right on, that's exactly why I decided to make this video - the Phillies cap was near perfect.
Hi, will you be trying New Era’s latest model, the 9Seventy? I think they call it a mid-profile. Curious to hear your opinion about the model.
... Great video Doug, this is huge.. brilliant attention to detail!

The 2023 new era low profile is a much better look than the older 2018 version. 😉

Can you still buy that Phillies one anywhere? More of a maroon and gray under brim. It’s fresh lol.
I have not seen it anywhere recently, although it's probably likely to happen sometime - but maybe in a standard 59Fifty rather than the low pro.
