45. The Toughest Challenge Yet: Painting our Narrowboat!

- After completing the inside renovation work earlier this year, we were keen to start the exterior paint job on our narrowboat. We had to be patient with this as we were not allowed to paint her while we were in the marina.
After our departure from the marina on the 12th of August, we finally started to remove rust patches, sand and prep our narrowboat home ready for a fresh, handpainted coat of exterior paint.
Did we anticipate how hard it was going to be? In all honesty, no, we didn't.
We knew it would be a challenge, but boy, this was for sure the toughest job yet on our boat. Firstly we had to keep a very close eye on our strange summer weather we were having this year and secondly, bugs, leaves, and just the generally stressfulness of painting a metal surface firstly by roller and then quickly brushing over it to give that gloss, glass type finish.
Both myself and Paul have said that we would never, ever paint another boat again and I can honestly say that boat painters are truly talented people, yes I understand they have better working conditions than we had but even so, the sheer patience needed to paint a boat is not one to be argued.
That being said, we are very proud of ourselves for even attempting it and are happy with the results. It's really lovely when people pass us by and admire our colours, and we get a real sense of achievement.
Our chosen narrowboat paint colours were:
RAL 180 20 65 Petrol Green
RAL 040 40 60 Copper Red
RAL 7037 Dusty Grey

Looks really good. I know exactly what’s involved in that job and it’s not easy!! Best job I’ve seen done in the water. The mind game of finishing one side complete then having to turn the boat round and start again must be a killer!!

And it's still green, the tiller Andrea, I've yet to pick up that paint brush again to finish it and we are now 3 weeks on. Whoops I will do it the next dry weather spell we get 🤪
Sunday morning at Brausnton, didn't miss that paint job as you went passed the window and moored up behind us.... Looking fab even in the drizzle
Oh god we had just had a nightmare in the tunnel at Braunston, hit wall as boat passed us, ripped the canopy sides 😢 so I may have looked a bit deflated when you saw us 😳
I passed 7 boats in the tunnel the day before, so we lost a bit of paint too. I'd have said hello but I was having issues with my rottie, my breakfast or his!@@uponreflection

Looks great Ernie did great see there is a great thing having a waggy tail apart from whacking mum and dad ! Colours really work on the plus side you've only got to wait 3 yrs before doing all again ! Well done xxxcheers for sharing xxxx❤

My goodness you have excelled yourselves this time. The colour scheme is amazing and they go together perfectly. You always do something different and special to other boaters and should be very proud of yourselves.

Hi there, the boat looks lovely. I figured grey and orange would be featured when I saw what you picked did for the cratch cover. Like your interior remodel, no run of the mill narrowboat for you two. I love that you take a more original approach.
Thanks Susan and we'll done on your guess for colours. Originally I thought green, orange, and grey would blend with the autumn colours along the canal but they appear a little too bright for that, so definitely no blending in to the background for us 🤣🤣

Hopefully our paths will cross at some point again, we have only been narrowboating for just over a year, moored at Gayton marina and still learning , we love it ❤️ paw prints are great ,hide any mishaps 🐾🐾

Just been notified of your vlogs, odd as youve been here a while but binge-ing my way through them. Loving the humour and rapport you guys have. Question how has the paint held up and would you recommend it?... You've probably answered this further along but im still in catch up..
Welcome along with us, glad you've found us and I must apologise for some of the earlier vlogs, they do get better I promise 🤣 the paint has been brilliant to be fair held up well. Had to do a couple of touch ups to the black parts but not the actual boat shiny paint parts at all. 😊
The Boat looks great ….. but then, with your eye for colour ( both of you ) I’m not surprised. What’s the story of the name? Or did I miss it? We’ll done both the labourers and Foreman Ernie.

What a fabulous job you have made and a great vlog too. You should be rightly proud of the outcome after all of your hard work. Can I ask what type of paint did you use and did you have to apply an anti corrosion base coat first?
Hi Stephen, thank you so much. We used Rust-Oleum CombiColor from Rawlins paints online. It's a primer and topcoat in one. We didn't have to apply anti corrosion as we were painting on already painted surfaces so it advices that it wasn't required 😀

Hi there Virginia, yes we will increase insurance not just for the renovation work carried out but also for the extra electrics, solar panels els etc that we have installed. 😀

Hi Gary, got it from eBay. There are quite a few different ones on there, type 'boat name' and a few different ones should come up. I got dandelion transfers from there too but I think I found those under car, or caravan viynl category. Hope that helps 😊

Yeah I wanted a slightly more muted green but very hard choosing cilour online but it's worked OK and I'm happy for now at least 😉🤣
