The lack of special editions for the Broken Earth trilogy is criminal. Next year is the 10th anniversary and I'm going to need Orbit to figure out their shit and make it happen.
i love that the concept of the video is "books that altered my brain chemistry" instead of "5 star books" because there are books that had a long term impart on me (like ink & bone by Rachel Cain) that I know objectively are not 5 stars but still have something rly special

My first thrill type book was Share Objects by Gillian Flynn!!! I was HOOKED! I immediately read all her work. AND SHE NEEDS TO PUBLISH MORE BOOKS!!!

I recently read Assassin of Reality and the delightful bizarreness holds up. I really enjoy how much freedom the authors give the reader to interpret the Vita Nostra world and its happenings - like it’s kind of up to us to do the work.
The Fifth Season is def one of my favorites of all time, definitely the best in the series also. I want that special edition 😞

they also made a miniseries of Pillars of the Earth (I think it was only 3 episodes) and it was aired a long long time ago. I was only a teenager back then and now when I think about it again, for me it was like a mini introduction before I found Game of Thrones years later lol

Noughts & Crosses by Malorie Blackman is a book that popped in my mind right away. I still haven't continued the series because I'm still reeling from the first book. The series is speculative fiction that takes place in a alternative 21st-century Britain and explores racism.
I haven't read any of the books you mentioned, but have always thought about checking out The Fifth Season. A part of me thinks I have to read some "easier" sci-fi books before I can fully grasp the world, but I don't know if that is true since I haven't read it. It's just one of those books I really want to make sure I can understand it before I try it.

Thanks for sharing about how you've been feeling. I can definitely relate, and understand how isolating depression is. It really feels impossible just to do basic things some days, and then feeling frustrated for not being able to. I love Gone Girl! One of those books you think about constantly after you put it down. Still one of my absolute favorites. Need to get to The Fifth Season at some point. Great video ❤

Of the ones I read, 5th Season, Dragon Tattoo, Gone Girl, Sword of Kaigen. Spot on! And then, "Who knew monks could be so messy??" Sold!
How you felt about Gone Girl is how I felt after reading Dennis Lehane’s Since We Fell. I still think about it sometimes, that story got me so good.
I loved Vita Nostra. Do I know what it was about? Nope. Could I explain it? Nope. Did it shatter my brain??? ABSOLUTELY.

One of my recent reads, "The Immortalists" by Chloe Benjamin was probably the closest I've come to this feeling. That book made me feel everything! I think it's probably best categorized as lit fit, which I did not think I was really a fan of. That book definitely wasn't what I thought it would be going into it but it was so much better than I could have imagined.

This is s great video. The first two so far I had the same reaction to. This is so nostalgic. Makes me want to get back into reading and getting gagged by books lol.
One of the books that changed my life was The Golden Goblet by Eloise Jarvis McGraw. It seems so simple, but it made me realize how beautiful and transformative reading the right book can be.
I felt the same way about Gone Girl, and said it should be movie! ...😕nope... I was wrong.
Now, The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo I loved, and only read the first 3. I own a copy of the Swedish film adaptation. I personally disliked the Hollywood version...
NK Jemisin is a masterful story teller. She layers, and folds like a master chef! Loved the Fifth Season. My mind was blown! Whispers of her working on a screenplay...

For me it was Ken Follett's, Fall of Giants that got me into reading his historical fiction. I should pick up the 2nd in the Kingsbridge sometime, but I'm in my big sci-fi/fantasy phase again... inching my way towards some more grim dark. Atm... the Sun Eater series calls.
As far as books that have stayed with me... Fredrik Backman's Bear Town trilogy. Well, everything by hom has stuck with me.
The Long Way To a Small Angry Planet by Becky Chambers...
The Serpent King by Jeff Zentner
And most recently, the Boudica series by Manda Scott.
I think I read "Girl With The" in like 2011?
I hated it but this kinda is convincing me to give it another go 😅
The only two I haven't read are Gone Girl and Sword of Kaigen - hard agree on the rest 💜
There are the stupid over priced resold subterranean press Jemisin but those and Curious cat where too much for me. Like $100 is my sweet spot for a special edition. Stormlight only gets a pass cause I get more than one volume and even then I kinda hate it 😂
You took me down memory lane with Gone Girl you explained why thrillers do not work for me as well because it does not match up to that author's book. I liked sharper objects better but that was because of the TV show.
Jess have you read The Count of Monte Cristo? DRAMA. I’m reading it right now and love it. (I DNF’d Vita Nostra…I couldn’t with the peeing in a bush bit 😂)
