My impression is that people are mostly surprised to encounter a complete stranger confidently initiating a conversation as this is not a common thing (especially from a lady) in Asia.
Yeah I just got back from Japan and people were VERY sociable and nice when I would go up and speak to them. I don't even know too much Japanese, just a beginner still but I noticed not many women would initiate conversations there. Besides the maids and consorts in Tokyo streets haha. Definitely look into Pimsleur, it is actually amazing.

When i saw you speaking Cantonese, I was like "Oh this must be one of those practice in person" days. And I was right! I admittingly haven't started Pimsleur but I truly think watching your videos over the last 4 years has given me strangely the courage to start therapy and figure out how to be more outgoing and do social activities outside of my comfort zone. AND to speak more in Spanish when I have a customer (I took so many years, I still cant reply back well, but I understand it LOL).
You are like a diplomat, an ambassador, the best one ever! When I was in Africa, I remember getting a lot of attention but not always loving it. I remember the reaction of kids, mostly curiosity but sometimes even fear. But when I felt overwhelmed at times, I would stop myself to remind myself, YOU ARE HERE. I was blessed to be there and see the world from a new perspective and learn other languages. We don't need to be afraid, even with huge differences in culture, we find our common ground. We're all people doing our best and wanting the best for our children.
i went to africa once but i was in a tourist spot.... it was pretty awful, constantly getting asked to buy this or that, and when i actually wanted to buy something suddenly the whole street ganged on on me lolll , i figured i'd do the guy a favor and ignore all the lowballers, so i paid the original guy his price! turns out i bought a 2 dollar Sisha/hooker/water pipe for about 15 dollars LOL

This Proves how thru ignorance we can ISOLATE ourselves. Language is truly an antidote to Separatism and Racism. I wish I too had earlier in life learned to be multilingual as is this "Pearl" of a lady.

The question of "Are you Hongkongese?" makes sense since it was a British Colony and there is a small European community who have lived there for generations.
I'll be satisfied when I can be truly conversational in Japanese, which I'm still very far from. But when I was in France and Belgium, I used my very limited and I thought almost forgotten French. Surprised myself by how much I remembered, and how much came back as I used it. Was able to use my almost non existent German in Germany, Switzerland and Austria. I learned very minimal Italian for my time there. Just using the little bits of the language of the country I was in always provoked a positive response. The funniest thing was when I was trying to recall an word or phrase in response, I often ended up responding unconsciously in Japanese. That truly surprised me, and happened often enough that is noticeable to the people I was with. They kept asking me why I was speaking Japanese. That's why I marvel at your ability to coherently carry on a conversation in multiple languages and keeping it all straight. Another great video, and whenever I need to gain inspiration for what is possible I only have to watch one of your videos. However, it helps that so many people know, can understand, and speak some English. Like in Asia, most know more English than I know their native language. They may be embarrassed by what they perceive as a lack of ability in English, which they are more willing to use when I have spoken to them in my poor imitations of their native tongues. Lately my memory is crap so I would also get languages jumbled up. I don't even try anymore but I am glad that you do try. That will take you far in life. :)
Language switching is always something very difficult too, I also speak better mandarin than Cantonese but sometimes I’m forced to swap to canto and as you can imagine it wasn’t a pretty experience

It's an immediate ice-breaker if you can speak the other person's language, even just a little. It doesn't take a lot of effort really, and it's a huge sign of recognition. You're on their ground, and it's a show of respect.

Pimsleur is great, I only wish Cantonese had more than one level on it.
It's amazing. I pair it with VRChat and I go try to talk to people in Japanese and Mandarin after doing some courses on Pimsleur and it helps a ton.
