    I know its got problems but there's just something about this anime that clicks with me. Seeing Dante's day to day life is fascinating for me to watch and I can buy the fact that he wins every fight with ease since by this point he's already kicked Mudas' arse back to the underworld. Also Lady meeting Trish for the first time was just such a joy :D

      Well to expect Dante to actually be challenged at this point is folly on anyone's account. Only Vergil, Nero (to an extent) and Sparda could ever really challenge Dante. Also the anime had some really solid moments and delved into what Dante was really like below his flippant attitude. That episode about the Rock Queen was probably my favourite.

      I think Dante can be compared to Hellsing's Alucard. Both are seasoned veterans in the monster-slaying business, so it makes sense that they outclass most of their prey. The difference is that when Alucard fights someone he knows is beneath him, he makes sport out of them, which makes for greater entertainment, but Dante doesn't have that luxury because he's far more concerned with protecting the innocent and causing as little collateral damage as possible.

    A lot of people misunderstand this anime for what it really is. DMC was the original “One Punch Man”. It stars an overpowered MC who knows he’s OP and therefore spends his time doing the right thing instead of seeking glory, fame, recognition or status. Dante doesn’t care for those things, he’s just a guy trying to do the right thing...

      Such a great analogy/comparison! I've heard people complain about how quickly Dante ends the fights against demons in this show, but then these same people PRAISE Saitama for doing more or less the same thing to his enemies.
      As someone who played the games before watching this, I have to say that Devil May Cry (while not the first anime I watched) was basically my gateway anime that convinced me to watch other series!

      Also, there's another show that Devil May Cry really reminds me of that I was actually watching at the same time... Constantine. They're VEEEEERY similar, both being about some aloof guy in a trench coat who fights demonic threats on a regular basis in an episodic show that gets a plot by the end, and the story kicks off with the hero meeting some younger girl. Also, both shows even contain an episode about a demonic record that is killing people, and both the hero and some villain are out to obtain it.

      The human world has always been obscured in the DMC universe, much to my disliking. What made this anime special for me was how It rooted Dante's adventures and all the supernatural phenomena into the day-to-day life of the human world. I really really wish this anime was longer and better written, for It could fill in the gaps created by the lack-luster production of the games when It comes to world-building.

    Well, while the anime was in development(and I think during animation) there was no story. It was just episodes, but they needed a story and ending and just crammed one into the last few episodes.
    Plus I'm sure Dante is... depressed. I watched a video on this theory. Having to kill his brother, the events with Mundus and being reminded of his mother, and being lonely from pushing everyone away to keep them safe.
    Think of the credits as well. Dante is drinking alone with sad music playing.

    I think the Anime was very well done and took the perfect approach to Dante's character based on what is known about him. He is an overpowered demon hunter who has his own business almost like a Private Investigator but for demons. The episodes play out in this detective mystery kind of fashion each with their own interesting and self contained stories with an overarching plot.
    The action or rather, Dante's overpowered skills are downplayed as he can dispense of these demons with ease so instead of going balls to the wall with action set pieces they are rather scarce and quick. I think that was the right approach considering the games are all about action and we get plenty of it but the anime is story focused so they hold back on the action so as to make it more satisfying to see when it does come around. The guy is cocky for good reason so it was wise to hold back and buildup the fights instead of blowing their load too quick.

    • @katsukii-21
      @katsukii-21 5 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      and let's not forget, that Dante is actually depressed in the series because of the whole Mallet Island experience, Vergil's death, and Trish reminding him of his dead mother (and all of this leads into dmc2 Dante being more serious) which is a great approach to the character in my opinion, idk, it gives him a lot more depth

  • @BigHeadClan

    I honestly enjoyed the crap out of this anime, especially the music. Honestly having a 20-25 episode run time and a bit better fights would have solved most of the issues.
    Extra episodes would help build the main plot while flushing out side characters as well as really build up the big bad.
    As for Dante being over powered that makes sense... He beat the ruler of the demon relm, random demon aint going to show up that a stronger than Munus.

  • @randompoet9997
    @randompoet9997 6 ปีที่แล้ว +77

    I think the that the best way to look at this anime is not as an action packed story but rather as a sort of slice of life show. In the games you see Dante going through some huge struggles, where as the anime is just his daily life, it just wouldn't make sense for him to struggle against every demon.

There wasn't even anything that special or demonic about the prison itself; it seemed to be just your normal ass gaol, with a creepy bumbling idiot for a warden.

Some may think it’s boring since Dante is more serious than he was as a teen but it’s reasonable for him to be this way. The storyline takes place after dmc 1 where Dante finds his older brother his only family left to be possess and possibly dead by Mundus leaving him to be alone once again

    Thoughts on the review: Pretty good take on it. I appreciate that you share some of my problems with the characterizations. Some people also don't quite get the difference between a series having a nice artstyle and having fluid animation so I like that you pointed out the flaws in the show's visuals.
    In regards to Dante not being challenged, with most shows I would agree with you. But I think there is a case to be made that it makes sense for Dante. The series takes place after DMC 1, where Dante defeated Mundus, albeit with the power of the weapon Sparda. It could feel weird for Dante to struggle with a run-of-the-mill demon. Abigail's ultimate defeat is easy, but I think that's probably the result of the length of the series. Something a little longer might've had a more detailed final fight.
    In my opinion, Dante's fights would've been easier to accept if they were styled like the games. In the cutscenes Dante usually doesn't have a problem with regular demons but he kills them in incredibly stylish and elaborate ways. If the anime could match the game it'd be easier to overlook the lack of challenge. From what I know about anime production I'm guessing they didn't have a great budget for the show. It's hard to believe that an offscreen Devil Trigger was a stylistic choice. This is another reason why I think they should've focused more on fleshing out the characters.
    I actually don't care for your favorite episodes. I found Rocker Girl dull and Death Poker lacked the psychological aspects that usually make gambling matches interesting. My personal favorites were the first episode (It has a bit more action than most of the other episodes and a few subtle references to the gameplay), the episode where Dante meets the demon who's fallen in love with a human, the episode featuring Sparda's apprentices and the final two episodes (The ending of episode 11 is the best scene in the series).
    I disagree that Devil May Cry isn't suited for a television adaptation. I think it actually works quite well. It just needs animators who can live up to the standards set by the action scenes of the game and writers who can properly expand on the characters while respecting what the games have established.

    Well, you can't really make a detailed background buildup of several side characters on just 12 episodes... And to point out the obvious, this anime is only a nod to the Original series fully expecting the audience to know exactly wtf they are watching in the first place...which completely goes against your arguments of Dante "needing a challenge" or "being anticlimactic".
    Just be glad it didn't end up like Berserk. They had animation, they had story, but they still failed..Hard.

    • @pigboykool
      @pigboykool 7 ปีที่แล้ว +31

      Well said. I don't understand why Dante "needing a challenge". It is more about the day to day life of Dante when he is not fighting another World Ending Boss (well, in the end he did).
      The anime show both the human side & his internal struggle every well. Even Dante acts like he cares for nothing, but his actions speak otherwise.
      I really enjoy the light-hearten episodes, learning more about Dante's personality and his relationship with his friends a lot. In fact, it is my Top 5 anime of all time. I hope Capcom with have Mad House to make a Season 2 before they release DMC5 (if they ever get to produce DMC5 at all).

    • @MaliciousMollusc
      @MaliciousMollusc 7 ปีที่แล้ว +19

      pigboykool basing on how well Castlevania was done, that would be very promising.
      I also don't understand why there needs to be a "balance" to Dante's character, since we all know it's already been established in DMC 3 with Vergil.
      And the part where Dante needs a challenge, he needs to understand that specific timeline. This is after defeating Mundus, probably a few years ahead. He is well on his peak. Sparda defeated the entire demon world by himself! Of course Dante wouldn't have any problem with anybody or everybody in this series combined! He's seriously mistaking story-progression with actual lore.

    • @pigboykool
      @pigboykool 7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Yep, Castlevania was a good show. However, I think not all amine have to follow the same formula - main character beat powerful bad guy saving the world. Many of our problems in our life cannot be solved by just force alone.
      I really enjoy seeing how a powerful being like Dante, solving problems that cannot be solved by power alone - like the one how Dante encourage his "stalker" in Episode 5 "In Private". Or excellent Episode 6 "Rock Queen" about the dark side of human being.

    • @HellRider_
      @HellRider_ 7 ปีที่แล้ว +17

      I don't get the "needs a challenge" argument either. Does anyone *really* buy that the hero would lose to a bunch of mooks or a monster of the week? Especially in action movies and anime? Dante steamrolling the opposition makes sense for the character and series, especially since he's supposed to be an experienced demon hunter who just defeated the demon king. Having him a struggle would be like having Alucard struggle against his opponents in Hellsing; it'd go against the point of the character and would just come off as contrived.

    • @mikkaelmansbridge5154
      @mikkaelmansbridge5154 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      because that's what makes good stories, struggle, and the lore doesn't exactly excuse that. they were making a side story, they can create any set piece they want that puts Dante at risk. a demonic monstrosity amalgamated of tougher demons, a rogue half-angel to counterbalance his demonic power, an intelligent demon that outwits and traps Dante.
      Hellsing doesn't really work as an argument, as the manner of tension was executed differently. any time a more serious threat presented itself, Alucard would appear to be in greater danger, and each time that happened, he would have to withdraw a seal on his power. Alucard also had a rivalry with Anderson, an equally bloodthirsty antagonist, who, despite being weaker, would always take to fight him.

    I actually like the episode “in private” as it focuses mostly (I mean bar one scene) from the perspective of the outsider (anyone not in Dante’s ‘business’) mainly Issac,who enters Dante’s world because he tries to dissuade a girl he has a crush on from supposedly crushing on Dante even though she states that she just used Dante as an example of the type of guys she liked,we see him follow Dante around town for example seeing him getting money for a job which also ends up with Isaac nearly getting caught breaking into devil may cry by lady and getting chased off by patty.

    I actually preferred that Dante didn’t struggle that much, showing off how empty his life must be.
    At the end of the series he got impaled and nearly died, almost like he gave up. Only to have his fire relit by Patty and remembering his purpose, which brought him the strength and will to make Abigail a quick fight.
    The episodes themselves are actually often a depiction of Dante himself.
    Episode 1 setting the standard for his demon killing. Episode 2 for his love for motorcycles. Episode 3 is about Dante’s humanity.
    Episode 4 introduces Trish and Lady.
    Episode 5 is about Dante’s secrecy and why he keeps to himself and stays alone.
    The rockstar episode is related to Dante’s music taste and the gambling episode is about his gambling addiction.
    The episodes are indirectly a peek into Dante’s character and as a person.
    Imo the action is what’s lacking and I felt we could have had a bit more if it wasn’t for just 12 episodes.
    25 would have been great and fleshed out the episodes more.

    You know, this kinda gave me a tought. Devil May Cry can work pretty well as a detective story with a really action packed third act. If i were to do a movie on it, i'd probably go that, way, since it seems like the smart way moneywise, since there's no much action scenes, most of the money can go in the awesome ending. With a few small actions scenes here and there.
    Also, wonder if you'll do a DmC video? As mixed as it is, it has a lot of story behind the making of it, and despite said mixiness, it kinda IS an underdog story, since it went from TOTAL HATE to, 70/50.

      Mark Rogian I'd love to see one on DMC. For what a stranger's opinion is worth I didn't hate it. Most of my problems with it were story related. The social commentary felt a bit ham fisted and out of place in a Devil May Cry game. Making Dante and Vergil half angel and half demon also bugged me. So much of Vergil's personality came down to seeing his human side as a weakness that made him unable to save his mother. If he's completely a powerful supernatural being then there's no "weak" side to obsessively try to bury. I did enjoy Bob Barbas and several of the scenes with Kat though.

      Hm, i dunno if i dislike or like their take on Vergil, i DO know that i didn't like the ''twist'', felt too 180. There was foreshadowing plus fan knowledge, but, it wasnt enough. And the boss fights was a major weakpoint, all the bosses, even the one people say it's alright. Most of them are a big thing in the middle like the original DMC mundus. And that's just booooring.
      The Angel/Human part where...meh? Why did they made angels if it dosent change anything? just to call ''angel'' weapons that? in some of the artwork apparently there was an angel trigger, but it never came through, and maybe if they dived more into the angels lore it'd be cool. And for all it's worth, i kinda liked the dlc of it.
      Oh, Phineas, there should've been more Phineas, he looks cool, he sounds cool, he should've been there for longer.

      I still don't like DmC. I mean, it's a good hack and slash mechanic based game, albeit kind of simple, almost mindless some may say.
      Aside from the gameplay though the characters were flat and uninteresting, the dialogue was like a foul mouthed 12 year old wrote it, and the ending was annoying and tried to pull a plot twist out of nothing and failed at it. To its credit, the Vergil's downfall was pretty well executed, but it was kind of confusing in relation to the rest of the story, and still just okay.

I'd wager to say many fans feel the same way about all of the meta-content for the series overall, which is why so much of it was worked into DMC5 as little nods and background info.

    I think u misunderstood a lot of things. The games explored the stylish action and dante's growth and struggle. He doesn't have his other weapons since he sold them cuz he's constantly poor and in debt. He's always been bad with money, even in the books/novels. He probably doesn't move much cuz he doesn't have to. The demons are scared of him and underestimate him. The anime is here to explore his day to day life and his other struggles to show he's relatable. He got much stronger after all the games and matured a lot and I believe it shows. If the anime went more action focused they obviously could've but that's not what they were going for. It's to show dante is at his strongest and lesser demons are nothing to him. It's like dmc 2 where he was at his peak strength and most mature I think. The game sucked but fits in the timeline. All in all I think u missed all the themes and overall moral of dmc. It's a deep series and it's easy to miss this deep themes. Also, I know the demons name is lame, but as u know from the manga, any demon with a name is a higher class demon that takes pride in there name. Another thing is I know the fights are short, which can be disappointing to lot of folks but dante at his power level makes the most sense that he one shots most demons. I think I covered everything. I probably missed something. Devil may cry overall on the surface is a dumb action game but it's actually a really deep story with deep themes.

    The reason the characters aren't fleshed out is an endemic problem in the anime industry, that being that it's used only as an advertisement for the source material. As such they want things to be unfinished so that you go and buy the games

    The thing with Dante never needing to struggle is odd. You can't really have him struggle with normal demons, because that just isn't something that would happen. He's strong enough to face down demons like Mundus after all.

      Currently watching Yuyu Hakusho for the first time, I'm at the beginning of Chapter Black and I see no reason why DMC serial couldn't do something similar to what Togashi was doing there. Despite being weaker than Dante, his demon of the week opponents could just have tricky abilities, or force him to deal with them under the sort of circumstances, where Dante could not just trivially mow them down like it was nothing. This anime even has some decent scenarios for something like that, but outside maybe couple of episodes any dramatic potential gets wasted by how trivial every conflict is rendered as soon as Dante whips out his sword or guns.

    Tbh, I started the series with the anime, which I loved. Hundred percent. I think it captures his character very well. At least his battle sass.

    I learned about this anime, through having the anime's opening theme on Stepmania on my old laptop, and through SonOfSparda's abridged series. Also, I'm glad they got Reuben Langdon to voice Dante in the English dub of the anime.

    I actually watched this with no prior knowledge to dmc, it was right after the supernatural anime on a list of shows I wanted to watch. Honestly the show was really good despite only knowing a bit of what was going on, I didn't get too much of what was going on with Lady and Trish but I did get a good sense of what type of people the anime version of Dante and Patty were, and the show really got me invested so much that i wanted to actually check out the games so I hopped on TH-cam and watched a playthrough... of DmC: Devil may Cry... I thought it was a prequel and that the other games were how that Dante turned into the anime Dante lol

    Dante crucified, with Rebellion stabbed in his chest. That wouldn't play out to well if this anime was made after DMC 5.

    The Anime took an approach on Dante that I personally really liked. He was depressed, as seen in the end credits for the episodes. There's a few versions, but the one that proves this is the one where he's drinking alone, as the shadows of his friends fade away before going to bed I assume. The Anime is right after the first game, where we saw him be a wisecracking but also serious devil hunter.

    I liked this anime, though I will take literally anything involving Dante and the DMC series--and this goes a little bit into what I've always been extremely curious about.
    Namely what is his life like when he's not busy saving the world and dealing with another potential apocalypse? What is a Day in the Life of Dante?
    I'm Betty Blue Biased, definitely, but I'm happy with the insight we got.

    Alright several things came to my mind while watching so bare with me
    First Fox talked about how DMC copied Bebop''s style (which i had never thought about before but is true) then said how DMC best works as a video game. That made me think would a Cowboy Bebop game work? please discuss
    Second I'm going to mention Gungrave in a sec and that is a video game anime and as far as I know is enjoyed so is that an example of a good game anime? Opinions?
    OK now let me talk about the actual subject of the video. I rather enjoyed the DMC anime almost as much as short animes like Gungrave and Trigun though I will admit I don't love it like I do the short animes Cowboy Bebop and S cry ed (the second one might be only me) but while hearing the critiques Fox made can't say he was wrong about any of them yet that doesn't change my opinion. so weird

      Hmm, interesting. I think Cowboy Bebop had a video game adaption that was basically a 3D brawler, but I had no idea how it played (maybe could work as a subject for a video). I'm not sure what would make a good Bebop game, but I would want multiple planet to travel to hunt bounties on, and space combat, either 3D shoot em up style or space dogfights.
      I've never played Gungrave so I can't really speak to it, though I've heard good things about the anime.
      I enjoyed DMC back in the day, and it can be fun to watch in a popcorn entertainment kind of way, but its one of those series that falls part as soon as you examine it critically.

    • @drew1429
      @drew1429 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Gungrave is a good game the gameplay is actually almost like DMC but if it was completely focused on guns it has a similar lock on feature and is based around getting and maintaining combos.
      Also it does its levels by chapters like DMC though they are more linear.
      It differs in that you unlock new abilities as rewards for passing total score goals so instead of doing well on a mission and getting money to buy things you will simply receive a preset reward based on your accumulated mission points.
      Also one thing I always remember enjoying is you have a shield health setup kind of like Halo and your shield regenerates quite quickly. so it perfectly mimics Grave in cutscenes where he gets riddled with bullets only to instantly regenerate and fire back at his opponents.

      You know something just clicked in my head a bit. One of the reason's I like this anime is because of Lady I am replaying DMC3 and while her character is interesting in the game her being angry and cold most of the time felt limiting even though it was justified for what was going on at the time. The anime showed the completion of her character development with her being happy most of the time and showing even with her main goal complete she is going to keep devil hunting not just because she swore to kill all demons but because it is what she loves just like it is for Dante and through interactions with Trish that she has truly taken what happened in DMC3 to heart and is willing to give even full demons a chance. Also characters are built on their flaws as much as their strengths and like how the anime shows Dante has bad luck it shows Lady can be a bit stingy with money which they hinted to towards the end of 3 so it must have been where her character was suppose to be going. All in it was the anime that change Lady from an interesting character to my favorite DMC girl maybe even DMC character so it will always be special to me because of that.
