      @@graymads Thank you very much, Madison.
      Also, as for honorable mention, Converge's Jane Doe is another masterpiece, it is about love, breakup, betrayal and anger. And by the sounding, it sounds pure rage, but somehow it feels emotional. The album opened me the gates of mathcore (alongside with The Dillinger Escape Plan) and metalcore, when I was graduated in 2019. And yes, this is another album that it's another favorable by 4chan users in the taste of music.

    I'm not really a fan of folk music either, but In The Aeroplane Over the Sea is probably one of my favorite albums of all time.
    If it helps, don't think too much about the simplicity of the song structure and the quality of protduction--it's intentional. The lyrics are so layered and uncanny that any additional complexity to the tracks would be over saturation. Don't get me wrong, I love songs where their depth lies mainly in the composition (I study ballet/dance 6+ hours daily so like...I have to), but I also think that this can be a distraction if the bulk of emotions and imagery are best conveyed through lyrics and vocal performance. As someone who typically pays less attention to lyrics and vocal performance, I really appreciated how simultaneously absurd and beautiful these are in this album. I think the juxtaposition of complexity and simplicity is what makes the storytelling in the album so captivating, and is why I kept coming back to it despite my initial indifference towards it.
    From your commentary in the video, it seems like you are taking the lyrics waaaaay to literally. If you don't want to dig into them more yourself, therevis a video on TH-cam that's at least 40 minutes long unpacking them, and even that video only really scratched the surface.
    Jeff Mangum's voice is definitely and acquired taste, but I'd recommend paying attention to his unrefined and heart wrenching vocal performance (I know I mentioned this earlier, but I just wanted to reiterate it here), which ranges from detached to on the verge of a mental breakdown.
    With all this being said, there will probably always be people that don't get it, and that's totally fine. It would be so boring if everyone had the exact same taste in music. On top of that, there was a period in my life after I'd determined that In the Aeroplane Over the Sea was my favourite album where I completely disconnected from it again, and it just felt like I was listening to meaningless clanging pots and pans. Now that I love it again, I can totally see how both perspectives can exist, even if currently, I can't even wrap my head around how I didn't see the beauty in it before. Any, I really liked the video and I can't wait to see what else you do:)

  • @barmanboy9895
    @barmanboy9895 ปีที่แล้ว +16

    F# A# may seem pretentious at a glance, but I would highly recommend giving it a relisten. I first thought the same about the album given the slow moving nature of the ambience and the long sections, but when you pay attention to what’s going on and the sections at hand, the album becomes an emotionally poignant piece. The depiction of the future and the super dark sound (similar to the cd artwork) make it an album that stands the test of time. That being said, I respect your initial feelings and don’t mean to demean your perspective.
    Also, the Neutral Milk Hotel made me angry inside lol.

    Really great video, it was super entertaining. I've never used 4chan or been much on the mu board. I've looked at the full list of their favourite albums before. There were a few records, that I knew on there, but most of the stuff on there is what i would call 'Internet People Music'. Music that no one i've meet in real life talks about, only online folks. These music artist interest me in a way, not because of their music, but because of their fans and how they are glorified. A lot of the music on this list, is just stuff i don't like, due to me not liking the music or because of the fans or the artists behind it. Oh, and i'm glad to see no NMH circlejerk here. That album and the band are... undeserving of the praise they get, which is the nicest thing i can say about them. Have a great day!

    A lot of what I saved to my Spotify in between 2017-18 was because I was lurking /mu/ in my latter years of high school. Among them were A Tribe Called Quests' The Low End Theory, Coil's The Ape of Naples, Kate Bush's Hounds of Love, Ween's The Mollusk, and of course, Madvillainy, Loveless, Filosofem, and a bunch of Death Grips, Kanye, and Aphex.

    Abigail Devoe made a really great video on In The Aeroplane Over The Sea that may grant a clearer picture on the album and why it is the way it is. I only share this with you because of your harsh words in regards to the project. No big deal if you just don't like the record, but I felt a tinge of hostility when hearing your closing remarks. As an artist, I really love the album, Mangum's emotional vulnerability, the compact production, and the wonky instruments used throughout. It is set apart from a lot of folk records that I love. Oh, and I'm a big fan of folk so that may also color my opinion. Anyway, really great video! I just wanted to share those thoughts with you.

I might be a bit biased because I live in the town nmh originated in and it’s one of my favorite records, but almost every person i know who likes the record never heard of /mu. "Real Emo" only consists of the dc Emotional Hardcore scene and the late 90's Screamo scene. What is known by "Midwest Emo" is nothing but Alternative Rock with questionable real emo influence. When people try to argue that bands like My Chemical Romance are not real emo, while saying that Sunny Day Real Estate is, I can't help not to cringe because they are just as fake emo as My Chemical Romance (plus the pretentiousness). Real emo sounds ENERGETIC, POWERFUL and somewhat HATEFUL. Fake emo is weak, self pity and a failed attempt to direct energy and emotion into music. Some examples of REAL EMO are Pg 99, Rites of Spring, Cap n Jazz (the only real emo band from the midwest scene) and Loma Prieta. Some examples of FAKE EMO are American Football, My Chemical Romance and Mineral EMO BELONGS TO HARDCORE NOT TO INDIE, POP PUNK, ALT ROCK OR ANY OTHER MAINSTREAM GENRE
    but completely unironically, tastemaker nerds tried to ackshually mallcore emo as not being real, but even mallcore stuff has more roots in hardcore in both fashion and sound

    Death Grips is god awful, and this is coming from a big NIN fan. There is a way to do noise/wall of sound and a way not to do it. Imo Death Grips is exactly how not to use those elements.
