This is absolutely beautiful and gives me chills. Such a wonderful Russian baritone singing the part of A Russian Prince with such feeling and passion. I wish there were a dvd performance with Hvorostovsky playing this role. I was ever so sad when he passed away at such a young age. This is one of my favorite operas .
paulostroff99 - No, I meant what I wrote. I mean, Rigoletto is not underperformed thanks to the nice *tenor* arias. That's why it is performed so often, because people want to hear "La donna e mobile", even though the main character is Rigoletto. In the Russian operas, the tenor is seldom the main hero, which is somewhat handicapping in a world where three most performed operas are Madama Butterfly, La Boheme and La Traviata. But you're right about Igor and Onegin - "to those who know them" :-)
Thanks for a nice comment, for a change! ;-) It seems to me that all Russian operas, or operas with the main character a baritone, are underperformed. Prince Igor is both. Rigoletto is lucky to have nice tenor arias. The world is not fair!
Sure, but concert is something different than an opera. This aria is very popular in Russia, and he's never going to sing it on stage. Your Professor is right, but then we wouldn't have a rendition of this wonderful piece by this wonderful baritone, no matter if it's a tad bit unorthodox.
frufruj-Thank you for your kind response. I would only like to add that one of te world's finest tenors named Sergei Lemeshev sings tenor arias from Eugen Onegin with skills never before heard on disk. Listen to his Lenski's aria.Awesome.
Russian operas are not well known or often performed in the west. Other than Onegin and Queen of Spades, and even those are an event when they are performed. It's always the same stuff - Puccini, Rossini, Verdi, Wagner, Mozart, Carmen, Faust... Wozzeck is staged more often than Igor. I think the music community is missing out not knowing Borodin, Glinka, Rimsky-Korsakov, Balakirev, Mussorgsky. Not to mention operas by Rachmaninoff, Shostakovich, Prokofiev, etc. I wonder why...
frufruj-Seems to me that Rigoletto is an Italian and not a Russian opera. Nobody ever said that life was fair either. Prince Igor dances and arias from Eugen Onegin abound to those who know of them. You are somewhat correct though. I suppose you to mean nice baritone arias in Rigoletto.
I´ve heard this aria sung by a high bass, a bass-baritone and a baritone. Although the tessitura is quite high it requires a darker "timbre" than what this excellent singer has got. Singing Verdi´s "Il balen" and this piece require two different voices. A baritone has to choose and so does a basso or a tenor ..told me Prof. Werba! Sometimes more than any other voice!
@sasha42196 seriously, and we don't even have the right voices around for Puccini, Verdi and Wagner right now, with the exception of Dolora Zajick and Ewa Podles (whom apparently the Met doesn't want to hire)

It´s SO nice to hear a difficult aria like this sung by a native russian singer like Hvorostovsky.

🎼🎶👑🙏😪💕👏🕊️🥀🌾
Wyjątkowy głos.
I agree: there is great musical wealth in Russia completely unexplored by West!

Grandiose aria with the unigue interpreter.

My favorite opera. Also heard it sung by Juri Bjoerling in Swedish and by Bryn Terfel in Welsh.

parole sante !

@Saiaton The Polovtsein Dances were not incorporated into 'South Pacific'. I think you are thinking of 'Kismet'.
OK, thank you! But we're back at tenors... ;-)
good stuff. igor's aria is beautiful but the opera is also underperformed.

Evviva Georges London!!!!!
ili Nemorino ...
@monpitt500 it mast be dark- such text

I am pleasantly surprised about The Nose. I hope it's a decent production and not one of those "innovative" interpretations.

George London is better, with his voice naturally darker to reflect Igor's dark thoughts.
