- Here's how I made 100 beer flight boxes for Cartridge Brewing! These are solid walnut and feature rabbet joinery reinforced with once fired 9mm casings, branded leather badges that are brass tacked on, and a chalkboard to label the libations that Catridge Brewing will serve in the boxes! I mean, how could I make beer flight boxes for a brew pub called Catridge Brewing that's going in an old ammunition factory and NOT use brass casings in it somewhere? BEER FLIGHT: if you don't know what one is, you're in good company because this has come up a lot. Basically, it's a sampler. Generally four 4oz glasses. Why called a flight? Well, it started wine flights which are the same thing.. a sample of wines, but more specifically a grouping of similar wines. Again, why flight? Well, apparently an archaic definition of flight is something like "grouping of similar things." If you have a better answer, or just a comical ones.. reply. This is just what I found from googling a frequent comment.

I love the fired shells in there instead of dowels. These are really cool! Way to put a focus on safety with all the redundant cuts!
Thanks! It’s counter intuitive, but the “safe” tasks can be more dangerous than sketchy stuff (assuming you know the difference) because of the complacency that can set in. Not that I’m saying sketchy maneuvers are safe.
So... I'm minding my own business this Saturday morning, having a cup of coffee, and hanging out with the kiddos before I disappear into the shop for the remaining waking hours of the day. My mission today: start a project of making 125 flight boards for a whiskey event. I'd spent the previous evening planning, double checking material, and working up a couple of different prototypes. The Standard Operating Procedure for my projects is disproportionately front loading with confidence and then quickly melting into second guessing and mumbling obscenities. I was following that same SOP this morning, when the TH-cam Gods smote me by putting this video as the recommended pairing for my morning Joe. Aaaaaaaaand... Now I wish I was doing THIS instead of my planned build. Short-story-long: thanks for nothing, pal!

Hey Brother great video!! Can I ask what kind of mic you use for your voice overs? You audio sounds spot on !!
Thanks! It's been a learning journey... I use a Blue Snowball. The trick is the post processing. I use Adobe Audition to record it and then run it through compression, normalization, and a low pass filter. I'm too indecisive to add any EQ.. but those three are ESSENTIAL to getting good audio.
YouCanMakeThisToo ok cool. I been recording right into premier and I will have to try your technique. I have upgraded all my mics and even record in the closet to cut down on the echo but it still comes out a bit off. Thanks so much brother I’m for sure going to try this !!

Yep wear your respirator boys and girls. I owned a welding, fabrication shop. We had a 24X24 paint booth that I was in quite often. Thought I was 10ft tall and bulletproof back then, but now I suffer with COPD. Side note I've never smoked a cigarette in my life.

i see you are using the rz mask. i was thinking about buying but the reviews form people who wear glasses were not good. how do you like it? i like the one band thing to hold it on looks very convenient for glasses and hearing protection.

I totally enjoyed this video, especially your commentary. Its not that often you get someone who admits they do make quite a few mistakes, which helps the rest of us seem not so useless. I dont know why I even watched the video as I am not a woodworker, but am very interested, maybe because I didn't know what "Beer Flight Boxes with Bullets" was. I only saw it cos it was in recommended.
I especially liked your comment about some TH-cam guys being "arrogant hacks", which is putting it rather mildly, I came across one quite recently, who's opinion was the only valid one, and to quiet my opposing opinion, he blocked me. So much for free speech.
Those shells and the nice peace of branded leather gave them a real custom type finish, as well as looking very nice.

A easy solution to moving that fence all the time would be to dedicate a socket and ratchet just for that tool and build a small holder for it attached to that tool on some tools ill even Epoxy a magnet to that one to stick it on the machine its for BTW if you are in the States Walmart sells a small Stanley 1/4” set that is lifetime warranted in a case for under $20 bucks built in the same factory that builds Snap Ons too i use those a bit and they work well ironically the fit and finish are pretty decent IMO

I also like the cartridge casings as dowels but using a rimmed cartridge with the rims standing proud would have been a really nice touch. Just a thought for the next 100 cases you need to make. (grin)

Client wanted a rough look on them. Ultimately that’ll wear better in a bar environment. Dents and dings will blend in.
I have a love/hate relationship with jigs. You made jigs for mass production. What I hate is having to made a jig for just a few items of just for a single item. It takes longer to make the jig that to do what you built it for. But if you want it done right you have to do what you have to do.
I feel you there. When I did the prototypes for these I just marked it out and didn't bother with a jig. I seldom do jigs for one offs unless super precision is needed.. or I'll do test cuts, both take time. CA glue and activator can make for really fast jigs though. Just the nature of the game.

Why drill the recess for the beer glass when the glasses are in the confines of the box?
Still helps keep them in place and from bouncing off each other. I offered to do it without for the same reason, but the client still wanted them.
I have removed the spent primers and put new primers in that have the anvils and chemicals swabbed out so it looks like a new cartridge in the knife handle or scale. It would be real cool to have a good selection of calibers and brands but that wood be nuts-o-crazy time consuming. Bullets are art!
That would’ve been tons of time! And one reason I went with spent rounds is so customers wouldn’t be concerned that there was still explosives in them or think it’s a full cartridge and try to take it out.
What brand and model is your respirator at the beginning of the video I noticed you use 2 different respirators the blue one
The blue one is an RZ mask. The big one is a 3M

Are the leather badges held on with anything besides the brass tacks? I would be afraid they won't stay on with handling and wear.
Those tacks are TIGHT

Tedious but after getting done it must of been gratifying. I'm absolutely stealing that shell casing detail. Not sure for what but I'll figure that part out.
It definitely is one of the more satisfying builds to have wrapped up! And go for it, just send me pics of whatever you decide to use it in!

@@timhallas4275 It's one option. It's for a brewery, they have varieties.. if you want a bottle or draft I'm sure they'll offer that too. These are for the hipster or indecisive crowd that want to try several drafts without ordering a slew of tall drinks.

Nice builds but there is a carrying handle missing! For all the viewers ouside the USA it would be nice to explain WHAT a Beer Flight is, befor starting the clip!

I made some telephone shaped flight trays for a telephone themed brewery. They were much easier to make than these but they also didn't want to pay much.

Very nice job you did, but I have no idea what a "flight"box" is, or what it's used for. Here in Florida, we use Cuzies, or coasters. I guess a beer flight box is a northern thing...
Ah yeah I should’ve explained that. A flight is a sampler. Normally served on boards, sometimes boxes. Four small beers, chalk board is to label each one.

at most brewery's you can buy a sampler pack, they have 4 4oz. glasses. they are then put into the flight box
