I was quite young, about 4 years of age when this track was all over the radio airwaves in the car or at home and played over PA systems at the mall (of course in a 'Muzak version') here in the U.S. in the later half of 1982 into early 1983 That's how how gigantic this track was here. The reggae groove rivals the best out of Jamaica IMHO....not as loose I'll grant as the greats put down beforehand, but the drummer and bassist have it down pat! Especially the basslines.....you get to hear those more clearly in this mix. Boy George offers up a blue-eye soul hint to his vocal delivery....catchy, yet also heartbreaking given the lyrical context. Just a great 1980s groove all around! When you could still make out the lyrics and musicianship before it became all noise from 2000 onwards, if not earlier. Thanks for this remix.
Yup, for me it started a few years earlier with songs like Cars by Gary Numan and got a hard time for it in my neighborhood that mostly listened to funk and R&B. But I didn’t care bc this new wave music was great and incredible.
I've been a fan from the beginning..Saw them in concert a couple times in my early teens. I remember before my first show in Buffalo I was checking out some EP's at a record shop and met so many awesome fellow fans. It was an amazing experience . I got some razzing from my friends but all these years later they tell me that they respect me for being different and not caring about what others thought .
Yup and I remember those days and now everyone is like oh I live this music from the very beginning, but I remember being the odd person for listening to this music when it all came out and made fun of bc of the way these bands dressed. I remember when this album and boy George came in the scene and the record stores having the posters up. Ppl. Amazed it was not a girl and an actually a boy (Man). Yeah, glad I didn’t follow the crowd and stuck to what I liked back then and still.
First time i heard this song it broke my heart. I knew there was something special about the singer. I still hadn't seen what he looked like until much later, made no difference Boy George was/is a Beautiful person. ❤😊
Driving across state of Michigan in 1982. CADILLAC, TO Franfort,, mi former WBNZ. Good lord every single radio station had this song playing ,,, Lansing to Detroit.WVIC and Howell WHMI. Every station every hour 1982
Boy George hands down is one of the best pop song singers of all time......what a stunning voice. This is a classic of a by gone era where songs even in the 80s were still good......
Thank You Thank You. I only found this version one time while i was a Freshman in College and I fell in love with the song and Boy George. Still a fan to this day. I always wanted to find this track but I had no money and transportation, Out of luck but you got me. Cheers!
Yes, this really lives up to the title of purrfection .. I'm really into this version now..love how the instrumentals are emphasized, it adds a lot of gritty texture to the sound ...
Hello DJDiscoCat. I love! A song that made me love my work as a DJ. In 1982, I played this song every day on the radio. Thank you for this wonderful flashback. Thanks for this moment. 👍
The song that started it all for Boy George and company-now given the extended and rejuvenated D-Cat magic that this wonderful Big 80’s Classic so richly deserves-D-Cat,you’ve done it yet again! Keep posting, stay well and safe!!!
DJDiscoCatV2: Thank you for posting on TH-cam. I can't wait for you another Culture Club someday in the future. I am still big Culture Club fan in the year 2020.
Hi DJDiscoCatV2. It would be interesting to hear your versions of for example two classics from the 80's like Take On Me and Don't You Want Me. You do a good job, congratulations!!.
