    Food for thought: I’m a retired freight dog ( pilot that only flys freight). My last 25 years on the 18 wheeler ( B-747). Takeoff weights up to 900,000 lbs and speeds up to 180 mph. We always ran recaps and rarely had problems. One blown tire due to under inflation and one cap that came off over my career. I’ve watched your channel from the beginning and am always amazed how similar our work lives seemed. Keep up the great videos.

      I'm just curious, do you know why that one cap came off? Odd if that was the only one.

    When I started trucking in the mid 70s I was working for my dads brother, we would do that. We would spend 2 days 10 hour day's. I learned something while doing that work, spending a dollar too save a dime was not the best way to run a business. Morel of the story is He went broke, I'm still at it. My My My.

    I agree with one of the other post below. You may want to go ahead and buy those new tires right now and put them in the barn until you get ready for them. Tires for my truck, ram 3500 Dooley, went up anywhere from $40-$50 a piece in the last 2 - 2 1/2 months. They are only going to get more expensive if you wait. And may get to a point that you can’t even get them.

  • @mjmohn
    @mjmohn 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Stan, better buy those new virgin rubber tires now and just store them in the shop. Rubber prices are rising fast, just like many other products. In a few months, any "savings" you may have had will have gone poof. Check the rubber market and the projections. There are supply issues. Good luck. Safe Travels and Happy Trails.

    Stan got his groove on, he made a groovy video. When I lived in Thailand, I saw farm tractors with recaps made by home built rigs which made slightly egg shaped caps. With one egg shaped cap on each side, driven on pavement, the tractor would move up and down like a vintage coin operated kiddie car ride.

    Also the music at the end was fun, thought like you are going to screw something up, but the tires turned out way better than I expected.

    That's how they turned racing slicks into rain tires at Road Atlanta back in the early 80's. I'm sure they did it before then but that's when I started hanging out at the track. Learned a lot of cool tricks from hanging out in the pit area and talking to the mechanics, crew members, owners and drivers.
    I never had a problem with the Bridgestone drive tires on the company trucks I drove.
    I've heard good things about Good Year and Michelin tires.
    I've seen them make car and pickup tires at the Good Year plant in Ohio. The tires are heated under pressure.

    Grooving is a big deal with dirt track racers. I haven’t grooved a truck tire since late 70’s. First video “120ish a tire” would be a good gamble but 250.00 for drive tires definitely I wouldn’t take that gamble if you are little over $100.00 away from new tires and have better peace of mind that they’ll hold together also Be little earlier on the fenders. 😂
    Cutting new grooves definitely will let you throw the rock down and road so you can get every penny out of the tires, especially when you can just put a bandage on the one tire so you don’t have to change the other 7 just because of one tire. Good information I knew tire grooving was a thing , but cool to see one being used!

    Same idea with your tires wearing unevenly. The one that is worn off more is lower than the one beside it. Now it Carrying less weight then other therefore putting more stress on higher one causing it the over heat. Eventually blow because you were trying to save money. Not worth it.
