I believe they had a merchant ship fitted with a trap door under the ship and could release frogman when at anchor. Several ships were sunk in the Gibraltar area until the allies caught on.
The gibraltar operation is gone so: an italian (legendary today among the navy men) merchant was blocked in algeciras port in front of gibraltar from the beginning of the war. The italian secret service and the frogmen slowly substituted the civil crew, created a yard in the belly of the ship for the manned torpedoes and other things, and for a year or so everything there was an attempt to resupply via gibraltar the british forces in med. They did go out form there, swim until gibraltar and attack the ships. Someone died too. (not all tge attacks was succesful. But a large majority yes.). The british never understood from where they did go out.After italy surrendered they sad to the enemy that there was italian navy men there.

Sometimes, I think people miss just how important the torpedo was. This weapon absolutely revolutionized naval warfare. With the advent of the torpedo, the massive and expensive warships that were thought to be invincible suddenly became horribly vulnerable to anything, no matter how small, as long as it was carrying torpedoes. Naval tactics and theory was dominated for a long time by torpedoes. Even today, they are still important. It is remarkable that despite over a century of innovation, during which many naval technologies have fallen out of favor, the basic design of a self propelled metal cylinder containing an explosive is still very relevant.
It's exactly what an Austrian journalist that was embarked on the Tegetthoff wrote just after having witnessed the sinking of the Szent István. The fact that a 65 million worht battleship was sunk by a motorboat meant that the era of the big battleships ended there.
It is incredible that the sinking of the SMS Szent István was actually filmed. There are almost no motion pictures of actual hostilities in WWI, most footage shown today was either a post-war production or mocked during the war for propaganda reasons.
The Austrians expected a great success in that operation (The Otranto Barrage was dimensioned to block Austrian submarines, so it was expected for a group of four battleship to easily force it), so they embarked several journalists and cameramen to document it. The footage was filmed from the deck of Szent István's twin battleship "Tegetthoff"
Check out the italian commandos of the Decima Flottiglia MAS, elite diver troops in WW2 that used these tactics to success. They look very curious in the pictures too, with that mix of scuba equipment that was very innovative for the time.
Austro Hungarians also had torpedo boats. Two of them sank the royal yacht "Rumija" of the Montenegrin king Nikola in Bar harbor early in the war. The British brought one by rail in 1915. to Serbia and used on Danube against Austro Hungarian monitors.
A very interesting "feature" for the italian, altought sadly not a very famous one, was the "Mignatta", used to sink the austro-hungarian flagship "Viribus Unitis" in Pola the night of the 31th october 1918. It was the first torpedo "manually guided" (literally!) by two people, instead of beeing just aimed and shooted, so that it could penetrate at slow speed enemy lines without beeing noticed. It was evolved into the WWII "SLC" (slow run torpedo) or "maiale" (pig), which was then copied into the british "Chariot".

He was born in Capodistria(today Slovenian Koper) , which at the time was under Austrian rule , so when the war broke out he enlisted in the Italian navy succeeding in various operations in the Adriatic, was captured by the Austrians and condemned for "high treason" and hanged.He is remembered as a patriot for the Italian cause and received the gold medal for military valor

I always think of the Great War as a slow grinding affair that chews up men so efficiently there are few heroes left to recognize. This is a whole different perspective of the war and those fighting it.

Aside the CMB4 in Duxford, Some might be interested in seing the 2 original italian MAS. Luigi Rizzo's MAS 15, the very boat Rizzo used during the sinking of the Austrian Battleship SMS Szent István. You can see MAS-15 in Rome, it is held inside "Altare della Patria". Another WW1 MAS can be seen inside "Vittoriale degli Italiani" (D'Annunzio's residence on the lake Garda) , this MAS-96 was the one D'Annunzio was onboard during the raid on Buccari(Bakar)

George Vanier and the Van Doos, Raymond Massey, AY Jackson (famous landscape painter), Grey Owl (conservationist), Dick Irvin (coach of Leafs and Habs,not simultaneously though), and Winnie the Pooh (loveable black bear cub from White River, Ont).

Hey Indie, my great grandfather served in the first world war as a supply sergeant for the AEF as I'm told. He brought back many war relics such as his gas mask, trench gun and many other things including one French bayonet being dated 1874 on the flat end of the blade and a French saber dated 1811 on the same part. My question is how would a soldier of the AEF come across something this old?! My guess is a game of poker.

Hey Indie and crew, those torpedoes are mounted amidships and not at the stern; the stern is the rear or aft end of the boat. When is a boat called a ship? During WW I, if a vessel was under 1000 tons it was called a boat. The commander of a boat is called the Skipper. The commander of a ship is called the Captain.
+The Great War 3:58 - Time and time again I've heard this BULLSHIT (sorry for the strong language, but even in History classes it's always like this) of Luigi Rizzo almost single-handedly sinking the Wien. Well, it wasn't him that did it, and he didn't hatch the plan at all, it was Cavaliere MARTINI Arturo. How do I know? My grandpa took him to his own home after the Second World War, when he was in abject poverty since he got everything confiscated by the Nazis. I had the honour to read the original plans, the original scripts, the memoirs, EVERYTHING. MARTINI sunk the Wien ship, while Rizzo and d'Annunzio (the poet) got scared by the defenses and chickened out just before coming in direct contact with the Pola harbour. Two torpedoes launced from Martini's MAS, both hit the hull in the same point, according to him: "It hopened a hole about 5 metres wide, but it was hard to tell: although lights were aplenty in the harbour, we had to run away. After all, we only had to go there, cause the biggest damages possible and get away as fast as we could. Sinking the Wien was a thing we thought to be too good to be true, but Rizzo stole that achievement from me by telling to the Minister of Defense that he personally did it and taking as a proof a shell from the same torpedo that failed to launch and made a coward out of him." I have the proof to back it up, Indy, I can give it to you, if you want, even translate them to English. All I want is to give a war hero the honour he deserves.
If you have these sources (and had them for years?) what you should have done is: Approach a military historian, have them examined and cross referenced and then let someone write his dissertation about it and publish a book about it. That's how histography works.
Agar was the Captain of HMS Dorsetshire when she was sunk with HMS Cornwall in 1941 by the Japanese Imperial Navy. Agar ended up as Commodore Augustus Willington Shelton Agar VC, DSO, RN on retirement.

When your back later this year guys at the Tank museum please try and take a wonder to either of these 4 places RAF Museum Hendon there celebrating a 100 years of the RAF this year and have amazing exhibition of the Great War. Shuttleworth collection amazing collection of first world war aircraft from both allies and axis Duxford IWM mostly aircraft BUT! Have an exhibition about the above torpedo boats!! Fun fact: when the Italians sank the Szent Istvan, they also hit the tegetthoff, but the torpedoes did not detonate and the ship was saved.

The Ting I meant that a commando frogman unit inflicted greater damage to the British navy than the entire fleet of the Italian Royal Navy.

The Bolsheviks put a price of ￡5000 on Agar's head and let it be known he would be executed by the Cheka if captured.

During WW I, if a vessel was under 1000 tons it was called a boat. The commander of a boat is called the Skipper. The commander of a ship is called the Captain.

3:58 - Time and time again I've heard this BULLSHIT (sorry for the strong language, but even in History classes it's always like this) of Luigi Rizzo almost single-handedly sinking the Wien. Well, it wasn't him that did it, and he didn't hatch the plan at all, it was Cavaliere MARTINI Arturo.
How do I know?
My grandpa took him to his own home after the Second World War, when he was in abject poverty since he got everything confiscated by the Nazis. I had the honour to read the original plans, the original scripts, the memoirs, EVERYTHING. MARTINI sunk the Wien ship, while Rizzo and d'Annunzio (the poet) got scared by the defenses and chickened out just before coming in direct contact with the Pola harbour. Two torpedoes launced from Martini's MAS, both hit the hull in the same point, according to him:
"It hopened a hole about 5 metres wide, but it was hard to tell: although lights were aplenty in the harbour, we had to run away. After all, we only had to go there, cause the biggest damages possible and get away as fast as we could. Sinking the Wien was a thing we thought to be too good to be true, but Rizzo stole that achievement from me by telling to the Minister of Defense that he personally did it and taking as a proof a shell from the same torpedo that failed to launch and made a coward out of him."
I have the proof to back it up, Indy, I can give it to you, if you want, even translate them to English. All I want is to give a war hero the honour he deserves.
If you have these sources (and had them for years?) what you should have done is: Approach a military historian, have them examined and cross referenced and then let someone write his dissertation about it and publish a book about it. That's how histography works.
If so, you need to go to a historian with this information.

Agar was the Captain of HMS Dorsetshire when she was sunk with HMS Cornwall in 1941 by the Japanese Imperial Navy. Agar ended up as Commodore Augustus Willington Shelton Agar VC, DSO, RN on retirement.
The ship designs are beautiful, I would like to modernize the hull materials a bit and make my own!

The Great War actually helped Dice research for BF1, among other things.
I know, but that doesn't guarantee any authenticity. For the sake of gameplay a lot of that gets butchered in the development process.

even though the DLC technically dropped last year and in the middle of January + the fact that the model of torpedo boat shown in the thumbnail has been in the game since the very start. Good job pointing out a relationship that does not exist. On another note, The Great War guys did actually write the descriptions for the weapons and vehicles in the game.

When your back later this year guys at the Tank museum please try and take a wonder to either of these 4 places RAF Museum Hendon there celebrating a 100 years of the RAF this year and have amazing exhibition of the Great War. Shuttleworth collection amazing collection of first world war aircraft from both allies and axis Duxford IWM mostly aircraft BUT! Have an exhibition about the above torpedo boats!! Or try and get along to the main museum in London. Again great episode and good luck.

It was cramped, smelly, noisy and horrible, but atleast you could see outside of the tank right (with some periscope thingy right?)
torpedo boats continued to have a role in ww2. with better motors.
near the islands near Australia and Japan these boats work very well one could imagine.
