The X-Factor audition is clearly heavily processed. AND NOT just autotune! The rehearsal audio is very clean. All I hear is a little reverb, and it sounds like natural reverb from the reflectivity (hardness) of surfaces, like walls, in the room. It is very accurate. As with (almost) anyone singing unaccompanied, she is using natural, rather than equal, temperament and is self-correcting pitch using feedback. Where her vibrato ascends a quarter-tone (50 cent?} from "dead on" and then relaxes back into the pure tone, it sounds very natural and intentional. The vocal seems to have numerous little idiosyncrasies that echo some of the great singers who have made "I Will Always Love" the perennial hit it has been for almost 5 decades. It sounds far better than the TV performance. The producers 'shot themselves in the foot' by applying autotune and/or other effects in post-production. It's nonsense like this that led many of us to stop paying much attention to TV talent competitions several years ago.
My Niece, who is a good singer, used to sing unintentionally in Auto-tune style singing Disney TV show songs where the performers were Auto-tuned or at least pitch corrected. Because that's what she thought the songs were supposed to sound like.
You mean she sounded mechanical? Had perfect pitch? Or she had an annoying phase shift to her voice because she was singing on pitch and off, both at the same time.
@@GaryJames864 Sounded mechanical (hollow)and robotic. It was acapella with her head voice so the pitch was fine (as far as I could tell as she would choose her most comfortable key). She was manipulating her vocal chords and mouth to get that effect, it really was awesome, her Mom and I both Chuckled I asked her what she was doing. she said " that these guys are really good singers (to be on a TV show), she was 11 at the time, and she wanted to sing just like them" Her Mom said "you sing better" and dropped it.. I saw the original audition a few times over about the last year. She was a 29 year old cashier when she went on the show. It’s worth watching she just shines. It was on “X factor global” or “X factor Ukraine” I was so glad to see you do this particular performance and I wondered How she did on the show I’m glad to hear she won. The phrase the judges used when they stoped her from singing With the back up music was they thought she was lip-synching to the song and they thought it was “digitally processed” like in a commercial studio. The best part was when she sung A cappella when she finished she got a standing ovation and you could see the instant she realized the audience loved it. The look on her face is priceless. The show sounded much better then on this video because it wasn’t isolated I suppose. I’m not a musician or singer I do love seeing talent.
Thank you for this. I don't watch the "talent shows". Aida has such a wonderful voice that producers should leave alone. Auto tune should be banned from the whole industry!
A few years ago, I saw a friend of a friend's daughter who was studying at Juliard do a small charity jazz gig. The band played acoustically and she sang through a small combo amp that I know had no effects. Her voice was astounding, but what floored me was her 'party trick' where she imitated the whole 'pitch corrected' sound. Possibly something she had done all her life imitating modern songs.
I love these little lectures. They surely give food for thought, which has gotten me into thinking a lot about tone quality and "perfection". How humanity has turned art into industry and measure perfection as the ability of copying in exact measures. But copying is not art, so where have we ended up? Having played around some more with the mobile app, I come to a few conclusions about the quality of a voice. Measuring tones of voices is even a method in some health analysis. The more tones your voice consist of, the better health you have. So striving to have a "clear" and mono tone is striving for illness in a roundabout way. I also notice that my own singing is sounding more interesting for the ear if there are inconsistencies and flourishes in the app's lines. Ergo, using devices like these may make us direct our intention in the wrong direction, art-wise. Striving for exact and straight lines in a machine is "death". I'd love some analysis by Fil on Indian ragas, where "tones" are cascades of trills and combinations.

That makes sense. The judges, actual singers, thought it was so accurate that it sounded like autotune. But the producers, who are not musicians, heard it and thought it doesn't sound like auto-tune enough, or that the public wouldn't agree.

I don't follow the talent shows closely enough to have ever heard anything about them using autotune / pitch correction, but now it makes perfect sense. I appreciate the clarification.

They didn’t mention auto tune but looking back, her voice did sound processed. Her natural voice has much more passion than her “perfect” voice. I’m definitely a big fan of hers now! I was mesmerized when I saw this audition, and even though it did sound a little weird, I overlooked it because her voice was so beautiful. And yes, she is a GREAT singer. Great analysis, but it’s like you ruined my childhood Fil. 🤣

But, then I watched a couple of her personal TH-cam videos and to my ear anyways, there didn’t seem to be a great deal of a difference. No matter though, the lady is exceptionally good.

I can't sing either. My dad, who will be 92, this year, can sing. My cousin is a music teacher (singing), and is also a professional musician. Another cousin was in a choir, with his dad. I don't have the paternal genes.
Autotune, I feel, is very useful on, 4 example, a TV series that has episodes that have a musical component. It allows actors without good pitch, seem to sing perfectly in tune. For me, this adds to the quality of the overall show. It is pretty cool to see a good crew of actors actually appear to sing perfectly. Besides, I love technology and Autotune is a great "invention" . No different than visual special effects, right?
it's more like sonic botox and plastic surgery than special fx, it depends if you prefer a face with natural expresions or a weird robotic plastic one, singing is the same, natural emotions or stiff and robotic. To my ears it's worse than going off tune.

There is such a clear warmth in her natural voice. Such a clear difference from the Tv adution. Wow. Is she adding the reverb or is that production? Makes me wonder if Nightbirdes adution was auto tuned. Im going to relisten. Ive learned so much from you. Thank you.
The franchise are the one's who got caught by their judges who picked up on some artificial sound manipulation that just didn't ring true for the expertise of the judges. When she sang a second time without the autotune it was still exceptional but natural. Have to compliment the judges for their sense of hearing. The singer wasn't complicit in the talent shows actions.
Thx for the insights. I get the picture as far as post processing goes. Being much older (in my 60s) I’m also baffled by the whole “auto tune live” stuff going on nowadays with real legit singers (or folks touted to be), as opposed to an added effect like in hip hop & such. Strange days!
That was very interesting again. This singer has a great natural voice & is very accurate. She was singing the song Whitney Houston made famous "I Will Always Love You". It made me wonder if Whitney was ever auto-tuned or did she just have a great voice & range too?
we have to remember that it is a tv show and they have to sometimes create some drama, some conflict or something awkward to create some tension in order to draw attention. But it just makes us thinking if the results of the contest is already decided since the beginning.
In Second Natural Voice Performance, every time Aida sang C4, it sounded like autotune. She was consistently hitting them a little flat then quickly tightening up to reach pitch perfect, creating phase shift that resolves to the perception of the pure tone. So listening to autotune is like riding a sound board that is constantly on the verge of feedback and intermittently producing unwanted SFXs. No wonder we all hate it.
It can be hard to be sure these days. I really do think there are up-and-coming singers who attempt to recreate the autotune effect by manipulating their own voices. On the other hand, it could well just be post-production tweaking.
I watched parts of two other of this man's videos. I only came here to say his point is so simply made that he doesn't need to sound like some sound engineer genius. It's simple. Auto-tune sucks for singers just like click tracks suck for drummers. Sing and play with soul, not like a bunch of robots.
I've always wondered if that whole video was staged from start to finish. I don't think she was in the know because her reaction looks genuine when she was stopped singing - but if the judges knew what the producers were gonna do, and they were asked to do exactly what they did. Then the producers could edit the whole thing and really make a dramatic video which has been viral for years now :) which is exactly what you've pointed out! I've always loved watching that video anyways but I learnt so much from this video, your incredibly knowledgeable!! ...wow! thanks very much,
The first part she is absolutely using auto-tune but it sounds like she is back-feeding and/or adding Tremolo too. The back-feeding might come from the re-recording from the TV but unless she can throat-sing it really sounds like there is an excessive amount of tremble in her voice, if its real? WOW, just WOW! I do however have to admit I really love her voice, she should be much more popular than she is! Oh, and it sure does have that "tunnel" effect like auto-tune.
On the "look away portion"? All I kept saying was, "Dead On, Dead on". Because she's dead on, regardless what the "lines" say. It's only when others get involved, that she needs vocal lessons.
When one listens to a truly great singer, Adele, for instance, sings, auto-tuning would rob the very expressiveness of her voice. So much of the emotional expression is in the moving the pitch around the “actual” note.
Agree 100%. Early in my development as a musician I became aware that the idea of a note, or the implied goal pitch is achieved best not by achieving it exacrly, but by allowing tonal and pitch variation to guide the ear to explain the epic quest of the singer to follow a complex emotional trajectory. For example a note sung under pitch but dark in tone in a yearning manner as if reaching for it, or a celebratory note, sharp in pitch, but bright in texture: Such is true that both sound in tune, and both are completely ruined by snapping the pitch and tone to a fixed standard!
Firstly I'd like to give her my vote she has a wonderful voice. secondly and lastly the X factor appetence she was speaking in her native language which could make a difference, as many eastern Europeans have a harsher tone in their voice especially with regards to British and American ears
What you’re forgetting is that she uses the same microphone for a cappella and for the version with the music it was the microphone that was causing the mechanical sound because when you hear her seeing other clips the mechanical sounds completely missing! Have her sing without a microphone and then you’ll hear the difference
“I didn’t like that 2nd time because she was flat…” well, the 2nd “love” before that note was much more obviously flat, but “you” was closer, which is why it was harder to pick up.
Funnily (or sadly) occasionally my 12yo son, who usually has good pitch control, sometimes imitates contemporary pop singers singing naturally but with an auto tune sounding style … although he doesn’t do it when covering non-auto tuned singers at least … Wonder if others are noticing that effect on singers growing up around so much auto tuned music …
Fil, I have one for you. Jennifer Rush singing "Stronghold". I'd love to see her waveforms. Also, there is a pitch shifted note she holds right before the guitar solo that has always intrigued me, because I don't think I have actually heard anyone else ever doing it like that.
When you were showing her I Will Always Love You I thought I saw her range going from B3 to C#6. I think I even saw a C#7 but I'm thinking that was software. Am I correct about her range B3 to C#6 in that short piece you played?
Well done, Professor, you are so amazing! I very much appreciate your superior music knowledge! And I thoroughly enjoy your explanations and teaching methods! Thank you!
As far as the judges making comment I often wonder whether they have been told to say certain things and whether they are in on it. Often judges on these shows seem to ask certain questions that are very much in keeping with the back story that we have just been shown. It makes you wonder!
The xfactor performance probably sounded so weird because they stuffed up the auto-tune in some way. When she sings on her own remember some flatness is due to her accent affecting her English pronunciation.
What is the point of a singing contest that auto tunes the contestants? It makes absolutely no sense. Even more insidious when you consider some are getting fixed and others are not, depending on the backstory that the show wants to push in their agenda.
She does have a beautiful voice. These people should be ashamed of changing her singing to make it sound mechanical. I'm enjoying your take of these clowns who think it sounds better with auto- tune. Thank you for doing this video Fil.

ROCK!!!!🤟😀
Did they have autotune back then?
@@elizabethanderson4909 I think it came out in 1997.
They didn’t have auto tune then.
They didn’t have auto tune then.
Awesome analysis.. i learn so much watching yiur vids.. i thank you for that
LET US BE HUMAN NOT MACHINES ⚙⚙⚙
we have to remember that it is a tv show and they have to sometimes create some drama, some conflict or something awkward to create some tension in order to draw attention. But it just makes us thinking if the results of the contest is already decided since the beginning.
Great content FIL!
Many people have "Perfect Pitch". Couldn't this be the case here?
In Second Natural Voice Performance, every time Aida sang C4, it sounded like autotune. She was consistently hitting them a little flat then quickly tightening up to reach pitch perfect, creating phase shift that resolves to the perception of the pure tone. So listening to autotune is like riding a sound board that is constantly on the verge of feedback and intermittently producing unwanted SFXs. No wonder we all hate it.
You're a hero Fil for exposing how prevalent pitch correction is in the industry
I've always loved watching that video anyways but I learnt so much from this video, your incredibly knowledgeable!! ...wow! thanks very much,
Ah! I’ve wondered about that audition! I actually had to hunt that song down after I heard it and after that the movie it was in!
She’s already amazingly beautiful!!!
Aida is candy to both the eyes and the ears.
I like her natural voice without the manipulations.
Fil, I have become a big fan of yours. I love your vids. ♥️♥️
I saw this in compilation vid. They said she worked at check out in supermarket. I immediately went shopping.
Firstly I'd like to give her my vote she has a wonderful voice. secondly and lastly the X factor appetence she was speaking in her native language which could make a difference, as many eastern Europeans have a harsher tone in their voice especially with regards to British and American ears
Another great, entertaining, analysis video. Gotta keep busting this autotune tomfoolery!
WAIT wait wait....I think we need more info about YOU being on a talent show Fil :D
What you’re forgetting is that she uses the same microphone for a cappella and for the version with the music it was the microphone that was causing the mechanical sound because when you hear her seeing other clips the mechanical sounds completely missing! Have her sing without a microphone and then you’ll hear the difference
Happy New Year Fil! I hope you're having a great one so far! I'm glad to see you're continuing these analysis'. She a has a great natural voice.
“I didn’t like that 2nd time because she was flat…” well, the 2nd “love” before that note was much more obviously flat, but “you” was closer, which is why it was harder to pick up.
Auto tune spoils music.
She has a stellar voice. Her tone is pure gold. Why would you want to ruin it with Auto Tune.
Because these producers are stupid?
Is autotune and complex production the music industry's equivalent of doping in sport?
Fil, I have one for you. Jennifer Rush singing "Stronghold". I'd love to see her waveforms. Also, there is a pitch shifted note she holds right before the guitar solo that has always intrigued me, because I don't think I have actually heard anyone else ever doing it like that.
When you were showing her I Will Always Love You I thought I saw her range going from B3 to C#6. I think I even saw a C#7 but I'm thinking that was software. Am I correct about her range B3 to C#6 in that short piece you played?
It's just the software picking up harmonics rather than the main vocal.
Well done, Professor, you are so amazing! I very much appreciate your superior music knowledge! And I thoroughly enjoy your explanations and teaching methods! Thank you!
Great content. ,Fils knowledge and humility very refreshing....
It cracks me up that this video was prefaced by an advert for Autotune
I’m shocked as well
How are you honey?
It'd be interesting how it looks on a graph when someone is actually (audibly) flat or sharp. Something like that Red Dress song.
Judges: "You're using autotune"
Artist: "No I'm not"
Producer: "Wanna bet?"
Amazing…now I’m left with a desire for you to do this for my mothers voice….live vs recorded
Oh! I remember her from athe XFactor! She's amazing!
I had to check out you out on the X factor. It was great. I know you can sing so that threw me a bit.
So at 11:30 she holds a vibrato, but there is also a warble, an undulation in the vibrato. Like a second harmonic. Amazing!
As far as the judges making comment I often wonder whether they have been told to say certain things and whether they are in on it.
Often judges on these shows seem to ask certain questions that are very much in keeping with the back story that we have just been shown. It makes you wonder!
When I wanted to see this video, guess which ad TH-cam presentet ... If you believe it or not - I was forced to watch an ad for "auto-tune slice"! 🤣
The xfactor performance probably sounded so weird because they stuffed up the auto-tune in some way. When she sings on her own remember some flatness is due to her accent affecting her English pronunciation.
Well, there you have it then, Bob’s your Uncle to that query. Good Man , Fil bring the sunshine to them Cozeners, Son.
What is the point of a singing contest that auto tunes the contestants? It makes absolutely no sense. Even more insidious when you consider some are getting fixed and others are not, depending on the backstory that the show wants to push in their agenda.
