  • In this 1981 Q&A session, Ram Dass addresses surrender, astrology, dharmic anger, the illusion of separateness, relative reality, love, hallucinogens, and more.
Today’s podcast is brought to you by Magic Mind, a matcha-based energy shot infused with nootropics and adaptogens designed to crush procrastination, brain fog, & fatigue. Use the code RAMDASS at checkout to get up to 50% off your subscription: Magic Mind
This episode of Here and Now is from a talk in Melbourne, Australia, in 1981.
Ram Dass begins with questions about surrender, astrology, the renounced mind, and Meher Baba. He speaks about how the best teachers only want you to get free and why it might be useful to spend some time on the astral plane.
Ram Dass responds to questions about how to enjoy letting go of anger, homosexuality, and the illusion of separateness. He tells stories of his time in India, touches on the concept of dharmic anger, and explores the importance of tuning to one’s own heart.
Ram Dass finishes the Q&A session with queries about evil, love, and using hallucinogenics on the spiritual path. He talks about relative reality versus absolute reality, the art of social action, and why there are no rules in the game.
“Once you are without anger, then you can get really angry. I mean, there’s nothing more beautiful than dharmic anger.” - Ram Dass
    About Ram Dass:
Ram Dass’s spirit has been a guiding light for generations, carrying millions along on the journey. Ram Dass teaches that through the Bhakti practice of unconditional love, we can all connect with our true nature. Through these teachings, Ram Dass has shared a little piece of his guru, Maharajji, with all who have listened to him.

I have come to see the whole introduction debate now as cosmic irony being played out in a slightly humorous way, as we each see everything so differently based on our individual lens of perception. Thank you to all who share their unique perspectives on how they view things, and thank you to all who make these podcasts happen, and for the introductions too, as they help set the tone. Love to all who read this, and all who don't, as we continue our journey into self discovery.🙏💚

I so appreciate your gracious approach to address "the opposite of fan mail." I've seen comments like that and I'm always bewildered why listeners in our community take the energy to give that message when it takes far less energy to just move the red dot a few minutes in to the start of the lecture. We certainly aren't forced to listen to the intros, and so many of us appreciate what you and Ragu bring.

I think it makes sense to fund the people doing work to make these talks available for free - just not monetizing it exorbitantly. (No one should be buying mansions off of Ram Dass' work but it makes sense for those who contribute to be able to feed themselves.)
Ram Dass himself had a very big home in Maui.

I finally said to myself Okay fine if this video comes up one more time I’ll watch it. Well, it popped up again. Me: sigh , “okay Ram Dass I’ll stop and watch the video.” ❤

I should imagine that for those who find the introduction irritating… those friends are still maybe tethered to their egos… an expectation that “we need to get on it” as if there were anything to get on to. Every moment of irritation is an opportunity for reflection. In the moment of “now” there is nothing a person need do. We are already “on it” in the moment. Live in the now… there isn’t a then and when. Just plain ol now. Namaste 🙏🏻 friends.

12:33 lady asks RD about the shape of the crucifix. He responds after a moment of silence with “I have nothing innovative or interesting to say about that” … interesting she would ask that after RD was talking about Revelations being another astral melodrama. And even weirder reply. Just some observations.

25:20 RD says rules of morality apply to those not yet enlightened in said tradition. Those who are truly awake, fully embrace the karmic flow without need for strict guidelines yet set them up for those who have not achieved said state of being yet in order to prevent them from creating more karma.

Everybody has some separateness which needs to be accounted for and recognized. It is our humanity. Coming together with other beings on a similar path helps further one’s connection, though it appears to be counterintuitive when misunderstood.

Why have all these diversity groups for different categories of people if the message is were all one? Shouldnt we need to stop seperating ourselves into different boxes and instead start welcoming groups into one shared space, the world we live in? Theres no reason why lgbts or minorities cant just ride with the rest of us, right? I have a hard time seeing how this is aligned with ram dass's teachings. But Seems to me, longer we keep seperating, the longer we stay divided. It also seems to me, that the gift of having your very own safe space would be greatly overshadowed by the gift of acceptance into a shared common space. Lastly, It seems that would be even further overshadowed by knowing that permission simply isnt needed anyway because were all right here regardless. All living as different expressions of the same whole, and with the same beautiful creator alive within us and around us. Just a thought
