    It's great to read these comments with people saying they're not Maltese but understand 70%, half, 90%. Let me add my score: I'm an American whose main language is Mandarin Chinese, and I understood the part where the lady said, "She makes these bags... She sells potatoes." Cheers.

    Maltese is a direct descendant of the Phoenician language. Here's an example from the Tabnit Sarcophagus:
    Phoenician: al yikunlak zare behayim tahet sems
    Maltese: La jkollok zaghar bej il-hajjin taht ix-xemx
    Still very similar despite the 2500 year age difference.

    People keep saying "Italian" but in actuality the original language of the natives before learning the Arabic that would eventually become its' own language (Maltese) was Sicilian, as most natives trace their genetic roots to Sicily and Calabria. Italian has had some minor influence much more recently but Sicilian was a much greater factor in the development of the language and has been influencing Maltese for much longer.

    • @morceen
      @morceen 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The original Maltese was based on Phoenician not Latin.
      Modern Maltese is a Smetic language under Sicilian Arabic then Maghrebi Arabic then under Fus'Ha Arabic.

    • @AirBuddDwyer
      @AirBuddDwyer 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@morceen I was referring to the modern native population, almost all of whom emigrated from Sicily and Calabria within the last several hundred years. I don't claim to have any knowledge of the language of Malta prior to Siculo-Arabic, but I'm not surprised to hear it was based on Phonecian.

    • @morceen
      @morceen 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@AirBuddDwyer
      I don't know about the ethnic background of Maltese people, but the modern language is a daughter language of Arabic through the Sicilian dialect of Arabic, with a big influence from Italian.
      Linguistics estimate the Maltese vocabulary as 50% Arabic, 40% Italian and 10% English & French, while the grammar is based on Arabic grammar completely.

    • @AirBuddDwyer
      @AirBuddDwyer 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@morceen What I'm clarifying is that that 40% "Italian" figure is actually a significant percentage Sicilian, which is a completely independent Romance Language from Italian (and also much older).
      Many people incorrectly consider Sicilian to be a dialect of Italian (which would be literally impossible as someone younger than you cannot be your parent), or they casually group in all the Italic Romance Languages under the umbrella term "Italian," which is also incorrect, as well as disrespectful.
      If you don't believe me try saying to someone who knows Standard Italian and isn't from Sicily/Calabria/Puglia "aieri jivi ô travagghiu," and take note of how they look at you like you have 3 heads.

    • @morceen
