  • Over Easter weekend 2018, Iarnród Éireann with contractors, installed a new underbridge on the main Cork/Dublin rail line at Osberstown near Sallins, for Kildare County Council.
    The underbridge was constructed in sections beside the rail line over previous months by contractors Sisk and Iarnród Éireann.
    Work commenced for Easter at 00:30hrs on Good Friday morning and the track was reinstated by 10:00hrs on Easter Monday, with train services resuming at 12:30hrs that day.

    Before a machine was on site so much work had to be done in advance to make this happen. Great to see the job performed so well here in lil old Ireland. Meanwhile in the US, a given road can be under construction for years on end. I don't know why they even bother putting "road work ahead" signs up, no matter where you are, what road you're on, that's a given.

      Having grown up in San Diego, I can attest to the accuracy of your statement. In fact, you might even be underestimating their public works expenditures because at the minimum, five gov’t agencies are involved with every project, not to mention private contractors. Plus the economic collateral damage due to increased fuel consumption for hundreds of thousands of vehicles daily due to rerouting or being stuck in traffic delays, local businesses impacted by decreased customer base, sleep deprivation because people will spend a significantly higher amount of time on their commute, reducing the amount of time sleeping. And it just goes on and on.

    lmao.... They started doing the same thing in my city. Well, same thing as in replacing a bridge over a rail line. They closed the road on April 1st. They said it'll be open again on August 1st.

    Saw the same thing done in Toledo, Ohio, USA but it took two years and it was easier because the R.R. is under the roadway.

      The freight lines are privatized. It wouldn't happen at all. The rail companies wouldn't allow any disruptions to their main lines.

    I just want to know how they managed to get the secant piles under the tracks. Did they have to temporarily remove a section of track to drill them or how did they get around the rail and the sleepers?

    • @setyeva0
      @setyeva0 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      They look like tangential piling, a lot quicker and more than enough for this application and the soils in Kildare. At 0:16 they lifted the track in October, possible over a number of Weekend nights.

    I see stuff like this happening on a regular basis but what doesn't show in the video is the years of pre-plan and site work to get ready. After that there's months (maybe a year?) of disruption for any regular traffic in the area on existing roads before the magic weekend installation. Once that is done there might another 6 months of getting things back to normal and finished landscape work. The final thought that sticks in my mind is not allowing enough time for the earth to settle properly so the assembly doesn't shift come the next rainy season. That seems to be a common problem with anything built in a hurry.
