The first 1.5 years that i've had Lychee, i would spend HOURS on building supports. It was terrible. Then, i discovered the Auto support feature. Now, i run the Auto support at full, and then go back and do a full island search. It all comes out good. Definitely a huge improvement from year one.
Someone may have mentioned this before... your videos are excellent and very helpful... I get lost with all of the keyboard shortcuts you're using... I'm not suggesting you either stop using keyboard shortcuts or stop to explain each one but if, like in some videos, you have an overlay that displays what keyboard keys you're pressing, that would be immensely helpful... thanks for taking the time to do these videos... I've used lychee slicer for several years and these are the first videos that I've seen that explain in such clarity and detail... thanks...
@@Lychee3d a video on how to support vehicles such as cars and trucks. I’m planning on printing many N scale ones (1/160) for my model railroad in resin.
@@pacificcoastminiatures This is a good idea, cars and trucks follow a lot of the same ideas as engineering parts. It would be good to cover how these are different and how to handle these differences. Fun bit of into, this type of 3D printing is actually where I got started.
I know this tutorial is talking about Lychee supports…but the general support knowledge you’re providing is excellent, especially to a beginner, thanks very much!!!
Sharp and clear Derek. New in the supporting… one Great live and video, confident for tomorrow’s learning session. And positively going to join the community. Thanks 🍻
As a beginner myself, I learned about so many features and shortcuts I haven't used yet in Lychee. Thanks for taking the time to share your knowledge, Derek. 👍
@@Lychee3d Almost all the work I do is mechanical, structural. I create my own models. So, I make make them hollow thin or thick walled through my software. Where I struggle is flat surfaces large and small. Having various surfaces that need to be as clean as possible. I also have issues with print shrinkage.
Fell upon this video and gave me a good understanding on model placement and support placement. Good one Derek, looking forward to more videos you have either here or elsewhere. Much appreciated. 👍
Nice one Derek! This is a nice model too have printed him before. Great video for newbies to learn how to get the supports right. Preserve the front, always the best way.
This is pretty much the way I do it, and gets me 80% there. But after watching a video from leechy and learned about optimizing supports by having parents and minis and manual braces allows very clean prints.
Amazing video. I've been considering if it was time move away from the default slicer that came with the printer. Considering the features, and even more so the support/education commitment.... I think it might be time. I just need to commit and make the purchase. The features that really excite me are in pro.
I have a different approach for tiny minis. I call it a micro support, 0.1mm contact with the model. I autosupport and then support the islands. I also add supports with a drawinf tablet, one or two supports per square. The support ends up dense but each contact point is negligible. Like others said, use hot water and gently twist the print free. It sounds like velcro.
Really a great video. Gives a firm understand of supports and where to use them. I would like to see this on a larger mode, to compare the support structure from mini model to a larger one. I do have a question: the shape wall raft creates a suction cup. Is this raft NOT recommended on larger models? Or does that suction cup not matter? Thanks again. Will be watching others videos.
1 - is there anyway we could have auto supports NOT delete existing supports? I often like to use projection to get some good supports throughout a model and then I would love to be able to hit auto supports and have it do its thing everywhere else. And 2- especially if the above isn't possible but honestly regardless of that, we need a better way to select groups of supports. I often get in situations where I'm hours into supporting something and decide I want to delete, edit, add bracing whatever it is but it's a complex model shape and there are supports all around and the only way I can select the supports I want to work on is to literally shift click a hundred + times. Sometimes I can drag a box and then just unselect the ones I don't want but this is still tedious. Am I missing something? Something like the lasso tool would be fricken INVALUABLE!
Not quite, resin need a minimum value of "white" to be cured, so you need to find this "minimum white value" = grey offset, here's a doc with more info about AA :D doc.mango3d.io/doc/technical-documentation/genral-questions/anti-aliasing-settings/
We printed a lot with this one and didn't have issues, but for sure, there are better ones for bigger models to make sure they don't fail. The second one Derek shows in the video is awesome for that!
maybe you can help me with this. I have recently picked up stl files from LOTP studio yet I cannot load the files into lychee. when I go to access the files they simply are not there in the lychee open file option?
It's hard to answer you like this, is the file in the right format? I invite you to join our Discord or contact our support team for a more detailed answer. 🙂
I followed this video step for step and I still cant get a recognizable file to print. It always comes back as a pdf with a 17 min print time. What the hell am I doing wrong ?
Regarding difficulty with support removal, place the 3D print in hot water (probably not just hot water from the tap but boiled water from the kettle or instant hot water dispenser). I did I 1/6 scale hair wig that had been overly supported and I thought it was no good as the supports were not coming off the print about 5 seconds in hot water and it came off with barely any effort.
@@Lychee3d you're welcome, I've noticed some resins need slightly more time like the Phrozen 8k needs addition time maybe like an additional 20seconds but that's with thicker supports too. It's always best to do quick exposure to hot water and test how sturdy the supports are as I'd argue that the long exposure to hot water could potentially warp the print.
That was not a real print time. The layer height wil alter this ETA. When I print a model like this I'll do it at 30um 40um or 50um using different settings. FOr an object of this size it would be around 6-8 hours for a high quality print. A lower quality print 3-5 hours.
@@J3DTech oh that's good 😅 I've thought about going to a 30um height but I don't like the idea of waiting extra time. Currently I'm printing at 50um and even a 1/6 scale head takes about 6 hours to print. Mind you I've really only just started 3d printing so it's just a matter of finding the right settings, definitely not looking forward to printing the full statues I'm working on where it'll be 12+ hours 😅
@@Sicarius089 I used to care more about this, but now I find I often will leave a print on the printer for a day or two before I have the time to get to it. So what's a long print time? After you get a few printers it's even less of an issue.
@@J3DTech anything over 3 hours is quite vexing for me 😅 I just need more patience, which I'm working on. I'm still in that phase where as soon as a print finishes I try to let it drip for about 20mins then I start with the washing / clean cycle. Having multiple printers would definitely help as currently I have to wait for the print / clean up to be done before starting another.
hi, im trying to add some supports but i just cant find the cone shape, only cube shape its available, do you happen to know why is this? some sort of configuration or version?

If the print is hollow, would there be uncured resin inside? So if my dog gets ahold of one they could get sick?
