As a brakeman in the long ago, the Houston & Texas Central [SP] Hearne sub ran along the old US 290/Hempstead highway from Houston to Hempstead, then at Hempstead west bound, actually north, to Navasota, College Station, Bryan, and then we'd tie up at Hearne, or a crew change for the journey to Dallas. In those days, once you got to Campbell Road and past Gifford Hill gravel, it was flat open prairie. Now it's all part of Houston's westward expansion. The old 290 has given way to the new 290. I was on the head end east bound for Englewood yard when we hit a truck at the Hempstead Highway/Long Point Road crossing.

I live very close to the Hempstead Highway line, and never catch anything on it!!!!, but every once in a while I'll hear horns from my house
Is the spot where you caught the initial UP Intermodal still active?
