    Cleaning and lubricating a motorcycle chain not only extends the life of those parts, but it maintains drive efficiency. In other words, it ensures your bike keeps going as fast as it was designed to. In this video, we'll demonstrate how to quickly and easily clean your motorcycle chain and then lubricate it. See the full article at TheRideAdvice.com at therideadvice.com/clean-lubric...
    Cleaning and lubricating a motorcycle chain is one of the easiest ways to dip your feet into bike maintenance. And while with modern chains such as the O-ring and X-ring chain, lubrication is provided by grease sealed into the working area between the O-rings, you still need to lubricate the areas of the chain - the parts that are exposed to the environment and make contact with front and rear sprockets of your bike.
    Some will argue that given the cost to replace both a bike chain and sprockets, it isn’t worth the money on cleaning and lubrication products, nor the time to apply them. To a degree, this is true. It certainly isn’t as important to maintain your chain and sprockets nearly as much as say, ensuring your front brake pads are in top order or that you have enough pressure in your tires. But nevertheless, by cleaning and lubricating your chain you will decrease friction and heat on it which will not only extend chain and sprocket life, but improve the efficiency of the drive too. That means better bike performance and surely that is worth some time and money?
    If you are going to do this, you’re really going to want a rear stand. Yes, it can be done without one, but the only way to do it is by moving the bike forwards (or backwards) to rotate the chain which is a time consuming process.
    Cleaning the Chain
    Regardless of what product you use or what method you employ to clean your chain, it’s best to warm it up first by going for a 10 to 15 minute ride. This will make it much easier to get rid of the grime and grit that will have accumulated on your chain after only a few hundred miles (or less).
    When applying cleaning product to a chain, avoid any solvents. Between the inner and outer side plates of the chain is rubber and while it’s hardy, you will shorten your chains life with products that are designed to dissolve things. Kerosene (or Paraffin as it’s called in some parts of the world) is fine and generally very cheap to buy.
    If you really want to go all out, you can purchase a specially formulated motorcycle chain cleaner, such as Motul Chain Clean or Motorex Chain Clean. They’re a little more expensive than straight kerosene, probably only make cleaning the chain slightly easier, but come in a handy aerosol can.
    Whatever product you choose, cleaning is just a simple matter of applying the solution and if it’s particularly dirty, use a brush to scrub whatever else remains. A toothbrush will do the job, but a grunge brush will be much more effective (and not much more expensive, either). Place some rags or cardboard behind the chain where you’re spraying and scrubbing to prevent the cleaning liquid and the grime from getting on other parts of your bike.
    Once you’ve finished cleaning the chain, let it sit for around 10 minutes to allow the cleaning solution to dry. Again, if your chain was particularly dirty, give it a quick spray with the garden hose afterwards.
    Chain Lubrication
    It’s recommended that for lubricating your chain you buy a specific lubricant made for motorcycle chains. Many people go for WD-40 because it’s cheap and almost everyone has a can at home. But don’t use it for your chain. It contains petroleum based oils that are corrosive to rubber which your chain contains in-between the side plates. It will also attract more dirt, dust and other particles onto your chain, defeating the purpose of cleaning the chain in the first place. Lastly, it evaporates within a few weeks, meaning you could be riding around with an unlubricated chain which will ensure a short sprocket and chain life.
    Other reasons to use a proper motorcycle chain lubricant is that in addition to penetrating the chain, it will turn ‘sticky’ so that it doesn’t fling off onto other parts of your bike when you’re riding at 60 mph. Again, products like Motul Street Chain Lube are a good choice and at around $10 for a 10 oz can, it’s not considerably more expensive than WD-40 anyway.
    When lubricating your chain, you can either be very precise and spray only between the end plates (you’re targeting the rubber between each plate) and on the rollers, or spray the thing like it’s a cockroach you’re trying to drown. Either way works, it’s just up to you whether you want to be slow and precise, thus reducing the amount of lubricant you use and saving a bit of money in the long term.

      If you could just guarantee that you would only lose one finger and that it would be your off hand pinky, then you could just stop using this method after you lost your first finger. Risk-reward ratio is indefinite on this one, while the odds are regular numbers, go figure 😂
      It's like trying explain an 8 yo why you shouldn't have a phone charging in your bed, "do phones blow up?", "not in general, no", "so why can't I....", "just put it on the table".

    • @Therideadviceonline
      @Therideadviceonline  10 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Well, could you explain why you think that? And if it's that you might lose a finger while the chain is running, exactly how would that happen based on what the video showed? No loose clothing near the chain, the grunge brush is designed for chain use (i.e., it's not a rag), what exactly is the danger?

    • @DescaDK

    As most people have pointed out it's dangerous to clean the chain while in gear and running. Two benefits of cleaning the slow, safe way, are that you get to visually check the links of your chain. I once found a kink in my chain that was very stubborn. I knew then that the chain was ready to be replaced. The link wasn't settling right, and I'm not a mechanic, but that's a warning to me. The sprockets were fine, and the rest of the chain was good, but that link was toast for some reason. Second, I like being thorough in cleaning the gunk of the chain. Running in gear, I imagine might be quick, but you might not pick off all the gunk of the blind side of the chain.

    Well done on the video but I would not clean the chain while the engine is running for several reasons:
    1) Premature and unnecessary wear on the brush
    2) Brush hairs may get lodged in the chain
    3) Brush may get caught by chain and cause damage to the bike, the brush, and you. There are plenty of pictures on the internet of people losing their fingers because of this.
    4) Unecessary use of gas, annoyance to your neighbors, and less environmentally friendly
    5)Cleaning is not thorough. Only the surface gets cleaned doing it this way. I would recommend using the other end of the brush to scrub between the chain rollers.

    Wd40 and a old rag to clean. And some pj1 blue label for lube, don't think you need to spray so much to where it's running off like that just to where it's coated. For a non o-ring chain thats really dirty and gritty I remove it and wash it in old gas. I really doubt any chain cleaner would work as good as completely submerging it in a solvent.

    Not only is he turning the bike on, but very important is using the right cleaner, use kerosine or somthing mild that won't effect the O-rings between the plates. No Brak-clean or thinner or whatever. Your seals will be affected and dirt will get in the mechanical parts of the chain. result, rust and dirt inside the chain.

  • @GPz84
    @GPz84 8 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    Contrary to what people think, taking a brush to a chain may actually SHORTEN it's lifespan. A friend who was a rep for a major chain manufacturer told me that a brush can actually push dirt past and into the rollers, where it will stay and turn into grinding paste. he says a good chain lube will have cleaner in it which will dissolve old chain lube, and flush it and dirt away. he told me all I should do is spray WD-40 on a rag and give chain a quick wipe to remove external debris. wait 5 minutes, lube chain and wipe off excess. Oh, always ride bike for 10 minutes before chain service as a warm chain cleans easier and helps lube penetrate between the link plates and into the bushings. This process works like charm for me.

    • @RichQcCa
      @RichQcCa 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      "ride the bike for 10 minutes to warm up the chain" = some old husbands tale. Your chain will cool off way before you can even get the bike up on the stand and applying the aerosol will cool it instantly anyway. applying heat might be a good idea though, maybe using a plug-in warming source of some sort (not too hot though) that can keep the chain temperature up as you go.

    Cleaning a bike chain while running your motor? That's a trip to the emergency room and the start of a Fucked up day! You won't save much time doing this and you'll be risking too much. Even if you don't get your fingers caught, a rag or scrubber going through your chain wouldn't be too good either.

    It's been years, this video should be flagged unappropriated. Using the engine to clean your bike ? How many seconds you save? Comparing to the risk of losing all fingers. Imagine how many young kids tried it after watching this video, and loses some tissue with this guy giving a wrong "how to" video. Shame on this creator calling himself "advice".

    This is not how to clean a chain properly. If you don't flush the chain and leave the cleaner and grime to sit then you are wasting time.

    🚫❌‼️This video gives the ABSOLUTE WORST ADVICE EVER regarding putting the bike in gear to scrub the chain. A simple search on what happens to people who do that will show you why. Plenty of horrific vids out there on the subject. Please DO NOT put the bike in gear to clean your chain!!! It is not worth the risk to save a couple of minutes of elbow grease. Keep your fingers, and ride safe folks!.
