      That's a good guess!
      But it's actually there to delay the kick-out signal one tick so the memory cells that drive the temporary stops have time to initialize. If it wasn't there the trains would be kicked out before a valid stop was available and break.

      I like that like 15 minutes later we see how the final iteration of train stations operate, with a dedicated fuel train just sitting directly next to the station proper. I thought at first that it was a similar case to KaneYork and that you needed to filter out everything but a certain signal, but after looking at it and realising that didn't make sense in your case since the combinator in question already has everything else in the network filtered out by the first one which only outputs purple, the only thing left must have been a 1 tick delay :D

    13:15: For all its complexity, Factorio has a lot of nice little features to make it less frustrating. My favorite, for its simplicity and how many games nevertheless lack it, is how the game just queues up missing intermediate products for something you try to craft.
    38:15: Describing the first thing I thought of, before going for a slightly more efficient and _vastly_ more complicated option...

    Seems like there's a much better solution to the fuel train problem: have the fuel trains be a car or two longer than the ore trains and use a different stop. Then just use a timer and latch which activates the fuel stop once every hour and keeps it on until 1s after the fuel train arrives. If you staggered the start times, you wouldn't even need multiple fuel trains.

  • @WXKFA

    The combinator thing works because it adds an extra tick of delay. When a wire goes through any combinator it delays the circuit signal by 1 tick for each it goes through (but not parallel ones, only affect the ones in a chain). In addition some stuf, like inserters, actually need more than 1 tick to activate so a simple solution to activate the said inserter is to put an extra combinator to extend the tick duration to 2 ticks (or more).

    Thanks for the fun video!
    I'm pretty sure the labs could have worked fine for up to the 7 sciences needed with a tiny change to your design at 29:05.
    Keep the center belt as-is, coal+1 pack.
    The side two belts are only packs (4 more).
    Then have a belt for fuel+1 (2 more) pack type on each side of the line of labs, offset by one for inserters, and then use inserters to feed the "side belt" inserters, and then another inserter to feed the lab itself.
    Total of 7 sciences max, and you could add vertical belts as well to allow even more pack types if using mods that require more types.

    I know I'm watching this over 2 years after release, but I had an idea that I'll use if I ever do this challenge.
    To make sure all your stations are fueled, have three stations for each station and double your train length. Have the front cars be fuel, the back cars be what you deliver to the station.
    Station one unloads fuel. You just set a wait timer in the train menu. Have the belts you unload to set to put excess fuel onto a side belt.
    Station 2 is where it unloads the delivered goods. Just set a "wait till this resource is empty" order on the station.
    Station 3 is just to pick up any excess fuel that was grabbed so none of your belts are deadlocked with just fuel.
    I've played with trains too much

    Just wanted to let you know your videos sold me on buying factorio. I feel this is the video where the "before playing factorio" and "after playing factorio" hits me the hardest. You just appreciate the insanity more when "a powerline and a belt split with 2 resources" per assembly machine turns into several different variations of "x splitters, 2x underground belts and between 2 and 6 burner inserters" over the course of the video.
    And I thought I was getting annoyed when my power lines seem to always miss inserters in a double row of furnaces and I start plopping in extra ones and the overhead wires automatically add extra lines.

    I absolutely adore these videos that edit the raw gameplay of a title like this into a compressed, narrative form, and great job smashing this challenge. You beat the game in about the same time it would take me normally, and with infinitely cooler looking builds than mine too.

    Also, I know that the whole point was to torture yourself, but I feel like this would actually be a fun run to do if you installed the burner leech mod which allows burners to pull fuel out of the source object to feed themselves. That would let you get rid of the inserter feeding each inserter.

    Wouldn't this have been a good use of car-based belt logistics (for those of you unaware, you can put cars on belts to act as, essentially, mobile chests), especially for the research labs?

    Could you imagine if the main character, hero, engineer ran on burner power too? I mean, you'd have to keep stacks of fuel on him...
    Oh wait, Dyson Sphere Program already does that!

  • @samuels1123
    @samuels1123 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    There are very few things that could make this worse
    Burner belt (consumes fuel otherwise replaces itself with a useless version until coal supplied)
    Burner armor (use fuel in inventory otherwise the armor just falls off of you)
    Burner biters (tries to eat coal)

  • @alexandermcfarlane4019
    @alexandermcfarlane4019 ปีที่แล้ว

    In order to avoid inserters running out of their fuel trying to grab fuel on each new segment you can do the folowing. Place down a print of the segment, remove everything but the fuel belts. Make a print of it.
    Then you simply, place the fuel line print, let it fill, place the rest of the print. Job done. No more manual fueling hassle.

    49:30 And we learn that burners cant catch item on red belts. Kinda defeats the purpose of upgrading belts in this mod, at least for around machines.

    • @trapical
      @trapical 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      They _can_ if the belt is full. You just have to do the equivalent of "priming the pump" before turning the machines on :)

    • @DoshDoshington
      @DoshDoshington  2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Sorry, I mentioned it in the intro, but because it uses some models from AAI industry, while alterations for personal use are allowed under its software license, distribution is not. There's other mods that do what I did, like mods.factorio.com/mod/BurnersOnly. It just won't look as good and you'll need to resist the temptation to not use upgraded assemblers, inserters, or forges, since they're not disabled.

    Haha, the difference between a factory set up by someone who knows what they're doing, even restricted to "everything is coal-powered" compared to the unorganized, inefficient messes I make is incredible to see. Especially when you referred to what you had going, something that to me seemed incredibly advanced, as just a "starter base" as though it's not a real, big one was just incredible. Seeing skill mastery is almost always awesome, in any form.

    This is a pretty good way to show what "the fun zone" is. Factorio is still fun like this but its obvious that the devs want you to understand that throughput is everything, so they put as much of the fun parts of the game behind how they want you to play it. Then once youre actually good at the game you can attempt crazy things like this without complaining that you had no idea that was not how they wanted you to play.
