Teal - that’s a lot of belt dust. Check your pully alignment and bearings, especially the alternator bearings. Alternator also could have been under a big load if it squealed when you started the engine after your long sail. Happy Birthday Emma and happy Father’s Day!

Congratulations Teal and Linh, not only did you build a beautiful boat, more importantly, you raised such a beautiful young lady, Emma. I like so many have watched you all work so hard improving the boat and making it yours. I also watched little Emma growing into the lovely young lady she is today, what an accomplishment, (especially in these troubling times) well done, may the three of you have many happy, trouble free miles of sailing and discovery for years to come. First and foremost, a big Happy Birthday to Emma. May you be blessed with many more. Next, I spent a couple a days on a friends boat and he a had a piece of electronic gear that I have got to have and it might be something you want to consider especially after hitting the log episode. It's not cheap, but a Flir Camera. That thing blew me away with what you can see in the water at night. That log would have been easily spotted. He said he got it after almost hitting a shipping container that fell off a ship during one of the hurricanes. Again Happy Birthday Emma.
FLIR would definitely be great piece of electronics to have onboard. We have a few other higher priorty projects we are budgeting for first...maybe someday.
It's not even fair !!!!! My bride and I L.O.V.E. Dungeness crab !! When we visit our oldest son and his wife in Port Townsend, we always walk to the fish warf and buy a few 3 pounders !! Our favorite.

What's the beam on Basik ? she always look's helluva wide. And I've got to say (again ) Teal your standard of workmanship puts most mainstream boatbuilders in the shade . The way you source and fit exactly the perfect piece to make life easiest onboard does you credit . Example , the engine hatch covers with magnetic ? catches .

Living high on the Hog. that looks fantastic.
The alternator belt will only squeal under load ( lowish battery ). On your sailing trip south at night you used enough amps without the solar panel's help to make the alternator do it's work stressing that belt. ( probably was slightly loose ). By the time of your test of the port engine, the batteries were probably all topped off from dock or solar. ( ie No squeal ) Regardless change the belt and throw the old away. ;-)

Hello Teal, Linh, and Emma (teenager) now Miss Emma! My dear G. Moms name. Watch out for that bar in Coos Bay, I was there many years ago and tried to get out to fish. 44ft Coast Guard vessel came running fast back in with emergency lights on. It had turn completely over, broke off the pilot seat and injured one of the crew. Our Captain 👩✈️ turned around and went back into port. I will never forget that scene. I hope 🤞 you get my new book series “The Chosen Ones Oglala Warriors”. Book three should be ready for publishing in another three weeks. Lots of adventure. Beware the Coos Bay bar. It was 40ft. that day, I was there. God Bless you all. Smooth sailing ⛵️🐻

Teal, just an idea.
The next time you replace a belt, just do all belts at the same time. If there are two on each engine, all 4. A whole lot easier to get all on the same cycle. Like ties on a car!!! What we do at the airline.
Not sure on shelf life of the belts, but might be able to look at shelf life of other engine related projects.

Check out Shelter Cove on your trip - just past Eureka about 50 miles or so. We cruised on a 44’ trimaran years ago. Shelter Cove is a great place to anchor for the night or a couple days. Just keep in at least 25’ of water and clear of mornings and you will be fine.
