    I did a test with dpreview comparison photos with the E-Miii and the Panasonic S1 at ISO 6,400 With Topaz and the Panasonic S1 was just a little better when cleaned up with Topaz it was very close.
    The E-M1iii seems to be a little better then the E-M1ii when it comes to noise at ISO 6,400. So yes Micro Four Thirds is getting a little better with low light with every generation. But Topaz does make you feel like you have a camera from the future. 😂

    Hi Tim…you mentioned that you did not use eye or face detection while shooting birds. Could you please tell us what AF setting you did use with this camera. 99%of my bird photos are with the bird rather stationary and mostly with spot AF. Any help would be great.
    Thank you and keep the great videos coming.

    Excellent review Tim. Lots of good points, brief and well produced and done. I too wonder why Olympus did not include 2 USD II SD card slots. It must have something to do with the space and the need for more processing power. These companies pack a lot in these tiny cameras. Maybe they want the photographers to buy the bigger, heavier pro model. Regardless, thanks for the information. I shoot Lumix, but I have the 300mm F4 and the 40 - 150, with the delicate and easy to damage lens shade. Olympus has great glass. I will soon purchase your book. Unfortuently, due to my back pain, I'm not able to travel at this time. Maybe, I will catch up with you one of these days. Keep the information and blogs coming. Well done, bravo!

      Thanks for commenting, I guess it was a space problem. But for bird photography they really did pack a M1X in a smaller body. I have 2 M1X's which I bought with selling 20 years of Canon stuff, and I really like the almost 1 pound lighter M1Mark III. I've used it exclusively the past 3 days.

    Terrific, positive video that informs on the can do of the camera. For me, who has Olympus gear and enjoys the experience, I liked the video very much. To watch helpful ways on how to improve and enhance images, is great I will review this work again along with the best I have seen for the M4/3 system and equipment. The video I found clear and interesting all the way through with many fantastic images of birds, to demonstrate what can be acheived on dedication. Really great thank you.

    Thanks for your review. I've been using the E-M1 Mk ii with Lumix 100-400 lens for bird photography and I'm not happy. I used to use a Canon 7D mkii with the Canon f 4.0 400mm DO (Diffractive Optics) lens. It was relatively lightweight (compared to non-DO lenses), worked as a handheld rig extremely well, and took sharp pictures of BIF; but it was big and bulky compared to the MFT system. So a few months ago I switched to Olympus/Lumix. I like the features you cite for the E-M1 Mkiii; especially for bird photography. However, I think the lens choice is important and I'd like to hear your comments on the Lumix 100-400 lens vs the Olympus 300 f4 vs the new Olympus 150-400mm zoom. I'm particularly interested in the Birds in Flight performance. With my old canon rig (purchased in 2005), I was having excellent results (I didn't know how spoiled I was); with my current E-M1 Mkii with Lumix setup I have trouble tracking the birds. I'm not sure if it is a lens or viewfinder issue (the EVF seems to have a slow response time).... Your comments please?

    • @GodwitMediaLLC
      @GodwitMediaLLC  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I always use lenses from the camera company I shoot with. The lenses are designed to work optimally together. I have heard the 100-400 AF with the Olympus cameras is a bit slower. So I'd go with the 300mm f4. I will most likely be getting that new lens when it comes out I know it will be heavier, but the telephoto reach is fantastic. Hopefully I'll be able to review it. Thanks

    Looks awesome. The SD drive being slow in slot 2 is downer. I’ve found the AF button on the EM1x is postitioned slightly better than the EM1.2. Be interesting to see if the 1.3 has tweaked the spacing

      I like that we have 2 pro options with different form factors. Both have their place. It’s interesting to me that the Olympus system needs to evaluated through actual use in the hand; reviewers who measure specs only will lead you astray. For example the G9 to me is better on paper but the EM1 outperforms in actual usage. This is my real world experience through a rugby season shooting G9 and Em1.2.

    Hi Tim: Nice video review of this new Olympus offering. The photo of the kingfisher is amazing, Wow!
    I have the Olympus EM1 Mk II and am debating whether to upgrade, and I suspect there are many others with the same dilemma. I held off on the EMX-1 due to its bulky size, but this new guy has virtually all the features of the EMX-1 but the size of the EM1 MkII as you aptly point out.
    I was surprised to hear you say you wouldn’t use the hand-held hi-res mode for bird photography, as that is one of the attractive features to me; especially for a static perched bird, that is far away. The 50 MP will let you crop significantly and retain good resolution and IQ. The joystick for faster movement of AF point is also a plus. There are other more minor refinements but probably don’t affect bird photography too much. I think if they add in animal Eye AF through a firmware update, I would take the leap.
    One final question: Is there an ISO threshold value above which you use the deNoise software, or is it on a case-by-case basis?
    Thanks.

    • @GodwitMediaLLC
      @GodwitMediaLLC  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I guess you're right I could use hi Res for static birds, I find that I'm shooting more Birds-in-Flight with the M1 Mark III. But to be fair I should try Hi Res.
      For the noise, if the image looks like it has noise I'll run it through Topaz Denoise AI. But, if I below 400 ISO, I don't bother, unless of course it's one of those dark rainy days, then everything gets run through the Denoise software.
      Thanks

      Frankly at the small file sizes with a decent card like the Sandisk that reads and writes up to 170MB/sec I’ve never had issues with the speed and buffer except in very rare cases. Granted the E-M1X has a larger buffer with dual UHSII v90 cards but I don’t find it a problem.

    • @DaveHaynie
      @DaveHaynie 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      That makes no sense. The UHS-II and UHS-I sockets are the same size. The problem seems to be that the TruePic VIII processor only has one UHS-II port, and they seem to have maintained that limitation in the TruePic IX. There are very few details on these processors, and it's quite possible that the TruePic IX is a minor upgrade using the same package, and thus the same pinout and limitations, as the TruePic VIII.

    • @DaveHaynie
      @DaveHaynie 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      The UHS-I interface is limited to a link speed of 104MB/s, versus 312MB/s for UHS-II. though cards rarely write this fast. The 170MB/s, etc. written on the card is basically an advertisement. That's the manufacturer's best-case read time. What you care about when shooting is worst-case write time, which is where U1, U3, V30, V60, etc. actually matter.

    • @GodwitMediaLLC
      @GodwitMediaLLC  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Most of the time I like to have the background as soft as possible so it's easier for people to focus on the bird.. Sometimes I'll stop down to f/8 or f/11 if I think I want to show more details. Good questions Thanks

      One other thing to keep in mind is diffraction kicks in much faster in m43 than full frame. With the increased DoF already from the 2x crop, a lot of m43 lenses are tack sharp wide open.
      Past f10 you might get softening from diffraction depending on lens

    Unfortunately I don't find this very helpful in deciding on an upgrade from the MkII to the MkIII which I use/want primarily for wildlife. I want to know about AF speed/accquisiton and ISO in low light situations between the MkII and MkIII and any other relevant observations on their differences.

    • @GodwitMediaLLC
      @GodwitMediaLLC  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I never shot the Mark II so I can't compare it But this is just as good, just as fast as the M1X with slightly less noise. The Mark III acquires the birds just as fast as the M1X. So.... the Mark III is faster than the Mark II. I suggest you borrow a Mark III from your local camera store and test it out. That's the only way you're really going to know. Olympus does have a program where you can borrow the camera before you buy it. Hope that helps.

    It advertises focus bracketing. I'm always needing a quick shot of a bird in the limbs of tree and the auto focus grabs the closest leaf or twig and the bird is out of focus. And then the bird is gone before I can manual focus. Any experience with focus bracketing?

    • @GodwitMediaLLC
      @GodwitMediaLLC  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I' don't think that works for bird photography unless the bird doesn't move. But the new firmware update for the M1X has AF bird detection and should help. I used it yesterday and was impressed.

    Hi Tim, interesting review - I look forward to your BIF version. In your summary, you say it is a good upgrade over E-M1.2!but you don’t specify in what ways. Are you able to clarify?
    Most of the new features you list as limited use for birds, so you are mostly left with better stabilisation and the new Truepix ix. Is the AF performance better than the 1.2 with latest firmware?

Em-1ii is currently on sale for 950 euros. I would like to have a durable camera that is a good instrument for bird photos. Any recommendations between these two cameras? mark 2 for 950 vs mark3 for 1799. Is mark 3 worth twice as much? Thanks again and greetings from the Black Forest !!

    Hey Tim. Great review to deal with birds and wildlife specifically. Did I hear correctly you noted the 300/4 as 5.5 lbs? Did that include the E-M1X so with the E-M1.3 the combo comes in at around 4.5 lbs? Seems a bit high. My 300/4 is just a couple ounces over 2.5 lbs. I think it should be around 3.4-4 lbs total with an em1.2 or em1.3 body. Did I not hear that right?

    Much appreciate your video on this 'new' camera... If Olympus had come up with a focusing system that was able to track fast moving objects better, even though I have gone over to the dark side with the Nikon Z system, I might have been interested in swapping out my OMD EM1 Mark II for the III version.
    As it is, my Nikon's ( Z 7 & Z 50 ) find focus just about as well as the Olympus, with subject tracking on both systems lacking.
    The Nikon Z50 with its 20-megapixel sensor seems to easily outpace the Olympus with the same size sensor in sharpness... with out of camera noise quite a bit better as well, like you, I have been using topaz for eons, and their new iterations really are spectacular, but noise is noise, especially when we need need to boost the ISO. I will still be keeping my 3 micro four-thirds cameras around for a while, but I find myself using the Nikon's with adapted lenses much more than the micro 4/3. The Nikon Z systemis a great deal smaller and lighter than their traditional dslrs making the argument for micro 4/3 a little less potent.
    And oh yes I never really took to the micro four-thirds 4x3 format and always much preferred the 3x2 shape....

    Thank you for posting this, Tim. Looks like this camera has most of the E-M1X features except for trains/aircraft/car tracking, which we don't care about. A couple of questions:
    1. Can we set our own focus points, like we can for the E-M1X? e.g. select a horizontal band for birds in flight?
    2. Do you find the joystick useful? How would you use it more - to follow small birds in a tree, or BIFs?
