  • Learn all about handheld high resolution shooting with the Olympus OM-D E-M1 Mark 3 camera. In this video I discuss the benefits of using HHHR and talk about some things to pay attention to and look out for all while out in the field photographing a stunning sunset in the Sonoran Desert of North Scottsdale, Arizona.
    The video also features some post processing tips I have to get the best out of your HHHR photos. I'll walk through a couple of the images using Olympus Workspace and also show just how impressive Topaz Sharpen AI is on these HHHR shots.

    IFinally someone who gives this part of the camera the attention it deserves. On my Em1.2 I use the 80 Mp Hires for landscapes and nocticulcent clouds a lot. The reasons: noise and colours. What I have never seen done thoroughly is this 80 MP mode compared to the 50 MP Hires mode since they work quite differently. In 80MP mode it is simply better than the image I get on the D800E. What is missing is the removal tech from the Panny S1(R) and now the G9 too. These however lack the possibility to expose longer than 1 second...The Handheld hires also has troubles whenever people move. If Oly could do what Panny does this would be perfect for everything with the exception of situations where the main subject moves of course. Thanks for sharing this!

  • @UneBoleeDAir_Photo-Tech

    Hey Matt ! What camera is used to record the beginning of the video in the outside part ? I guess it's either an Olympus in Mode 2 stabilization (no electronic stab added) or a Panasonic with e-stabilization as there is a lot of very disturbing (for me) wobbling effect. Next time avoid Mode 2 on Olympus or E-Stabilization / IS Lock on Panasonic.
    For French speaking people, I've made a lot of comparison in this regard between an Olympus E-M5iii and a Panasonic G9, with various lenses that I interchanged : th-cam.com/video/au84WuKa0RE/w-d-xo.html

    • @MattSuessPhoto
      @MattSuessPhoto  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      So I used the E-M1 Mark 2 for the recording. And IS was set for Mode 2. I noticed the wobbling as well in post and am thinking it was due to the super wide angle of the 7-14mm lens, most likely filmed at 7mm. That, and my fiancee is super new to shooting video for me and wasn't as stable crouching down as she probably should have been :)

    • @UneBoleeDAir_Photo-Tech
      @UneBoleeDAir_Photo-Tech 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@MattSuessPhoto sorry I mistaken the mode 1 and 2 in my initial commentary (I have corrected it since). So your fiancée is definitively not to blame, for now on always use mode 1 (the one WITH numerical stabilization) and everything will be fine. Here is my test with the 7-14mm too, with mode one at the beggining and then mode 2 at 4:57 : th-cam.com/video/haxtSAkBjFs/w-d-xo.html ;)

      @@UneBoleeDAir_Photo-Tech oh interesting! I would have thought Mode 1 with digital would be inferior. Thanks for letting me know! Wish I spoke French to understand you in the video lol. Is there any time you would use Mode 2?

    Hi Matt: Thanks for the video.
    If you use the 50 MP HHHR mode on a perched bird, how long does the bird have to hold still so the image doesn’t blur? In the video at 7’30”, it looks like it is taking the 16 images over about one second? So, if the bird is still for that one second, you could get a great photo that you can crop in and not lose detail. Does the shutter speed you have chosen impact the duration of the High-res acquisition?( I saw in one of your photos a shutter speed of 1/50). Also, I was surprised to hear that it improves the image ISO by about two stops. That is a great advantage as well.
    Finally, can the High Res mode be customized to one of the Fn buttons of Custom dial modes for quick access? Thanks again.

    • @MattSuessPhoto
      @MattSuessPhoto  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      HI Larry!
      If the bird - and the branch - stay still for long enough it should definitely be possible. About 1 second as you saw in the video. I have photographed some wildlife that were staying still with success. Just take a few shots to make sure you get it. But again make sure bird isn't moving at all, and tree branch isn't blowing in the wind, etc.
      At higher shutter speeds it takes less than a second. Slower shutter speeds will take longer of course as it needs to take the 16 shots at whatever shutter speed you choose.
      It can improve ISO by up to 2 stops, and also can improve dynamic range a bit too :)
      Yes, you can assign it to one of the Custom Modes - and the Mark III has 4 of them instead of 3 which the Mark II has.

    • @larrymoss2745
      @larrymoss2745 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Matt Suess Photography . OK, great. One final question regarding HHHR mode. Because the EM1, Mk III uses micro movement of sensor to ceate the 16 images, does one disable the IBIS or change it to a different mode

    If you find noise in the image do you run Topaz DeNoise AI before you run the Sharpen AI?

    • @MattSuessPhoto
      @MattSuessPhoto  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I really haven't had any noise issues yet. But in Sharpen AI when you are removing the blur you can also adjust the noise with the Suppress Noise slider which I've done from time to time. If you still have noise, then try DeNoise and use masks to apply it just where you need it.

  • @Serenoj69
    @Serenoj69 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    What would have been interesting are the following things (to my mind): Take a pic like the cactus completely in frame. do this in 80 MP Hires mode, 50 MP handheld hires mode and the single shot normal mode. The proces it to see how the deep shadows look when we try to lighten them, so look at the dynamic range, the noise etc. Now that would be very interesting (to me). Because with this comparison of yours it is hard to tell how much we have gained over the standard shot and how it compares to the tripod HR one. May be I should to it myself.

    • @MattSuessPhoto
      @MattSuessPhoto  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It would be a little interesting to know. I would wonder if there is a real noticeable difference between 50 and 80. Another variable is the software used, as I get the best highlight/shadow recovery from Capture One Pro. Maybe DxO or other has already done some tests.

    • @Serenoj69
      @Serenoj69 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@MattSuessPhoto Well: the least interesting part is 20% or so enhancement in resolution (50 vs 80). Just taking 16 shots in a row means that depending on your movement you get about 50 MP. The 80MP has no such uncertainty. It is optimal with the exception that it needs a tripod. Also: 8 shots vs 16 shots might mean that it is faster and less prone to movement. Below I showed how Panny has no such problem with movement in the G9. In the end whether the difference is interesting is what a test, a good one, could show. Not saying you should be the one doing this. And like Matthieu did on mirrorless comparisons with the X-T2 to see which softwarepackage does best with X-Trans indeed we should test both versions with say DxO, Capture1 and Adobe.

    • @TheGotoGeek
      @TheGotoGeek 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      When I worked for a well-known but now long defunct computer company, the pre-production machines were typically kept as development machines. Anything that a customer ever used was usually updated to shipping configuration and kept by the customer. I would bet that OM Digital Solutions (née Olympus Imaging) keeps the cameras around to use as loaner units for interested parties.

    I wish the Hi-Res worked with Bracketing for HDR or the Auto composite, but that would be asking a lot.

    • @MattSuessPhoto
      @MattSuessPhoto  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      You could always shoot your brackets manually in HHHR - just adjust your shutter speed for each of the shots. It could be doable handheld if you make sure you frame similar between shots, otherwise use a tripod and the tripod high res mode.
      As for auto composite - are you talking about something like live comp? Ive done live comp of stars and daylight shots with clouds, and replaced foreground with a high res shot before.

    • @onthemove301

      Shame you didn't get a reply David. I'm an A7R3 owner, with 6 Sony lenses from 16mm to 600mm, and an Olympus EM1mk2 and Panasonic G9 with m43 lenses from 16mm to 1200mm, with converter, in full frame equivalent fov. Hi Res on the G9 requires a tripod, wheras the EM1mk3 does handheld hi res. The Sony will shoot 42mpx in ordinary mode. Why does M43 get knocked? Because it's good to slag off a brand for a reviewer to demonstrate their technical prowess. Nobody got fired for buying IBM, or Nikon in photography. So you rarely get criticism of that brand. Canon and Sony have big marketing budgets, and good junkets for new products that no reviewer wants to miss. And size matters. Nobody got criticised for bringing out bigger sensors, e.g. although the Canon 5DSr 50 mpx was noisy (I had one). But I have come to realise that 20mpx sensors in m43 cameras give excellent images on my 55" 4k tv, while that same cropped sensor is easier to stabilise (Olympus and Panasonic are way ahead of Canon and Sony), so no tripod required usually. And cropped sensors need only smaller, lighter lenses. Really useful if you hike with your camera gear. But I probably wouldn't buy the EM1mk3, because it has few advantages over the G9 which is much cheaper, unless you need the handheld high res, live composite, starry AF modes of the Olympus.

    Does this work with a single flash shot? On camera or not?

    • @MattSuessPhoto
      @MattSuessPhoto  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The flash will fire for each of the shots the camera takes building the high res shot. If using an Olympus flash it is done automatically. If using a non-Olympus flash you can specify the time between shots so your flash can recycle.

  • @Serenoj69
    @Serenoj69 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    No, on the tripod my EM1.2 gets me 80MP too. The JPG is 50 or 25 MP depnding on your choice. COmpared to the 80 M version in the G9 the G9 image looks visibly more detailed and sharper btw. Sad the max is 1s which for aurora etc is simply not enough. Let alone long exposures.

    • @MattSuessPhoto
      @MattSuessPhoto  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ahh yes - you are correct. The Mark 2 can do 80MP RAW. But are you saying the Mark 2 can not do exposures longer than 1s in High Res? I just tested and it did an 8s exposure just fine.

    • @Serenoj69
      @Serenoj69 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@MattSuessPhoto The Panasonic which gets you for some odd reason superior output in 80 MP than the Oly restricts you to 1 s max. So this advantage is to Oly. If the Panny would not have had that restriction, to me, it would be a clear winner over the Oly also the handheld shot for another reason. The Panasonic removes all movement almost perfectly (I have nevr seen it fail personally). SO the G9 gives you two options. One in which this removal is not applied and another one where it is. So you can shoot great landscapes. A car passes by: the car will me completely removed in the final output and it did not ruin your shot which in the end was not about a car passing by at all.
