i read "everyone in this room will someday be dead" knowing that i would likely enjoy it and relate to the mc in some superficial way. i didn't expect to have emily austin pluck my exact thoughts and feelings from my brain and put them to page. to top it off, austin grew up in the same town i'm from--which is where the story takes place! at first i thought i was going crazy after recognizing some of the street names, but i confirmed it after reading grace's obituary. this only cemented how much i saw myself in gilda. definitely one of my favourite reads of 2023!!

I'm not autistic myself but I completely enjoyed Chloé Hayden's "Different Not Less". I think it's a great book for understanding neurodiversity whether you're neurodivergent or not. Chloé is autistic and has ADHD so you're getting a firsthand account of her life and little tips on how she manages it basically. - My review probably does it a disservice it's early and I'm running on little sleep but I very much recommend it!

didn't read much in June, but i read "The Luis Ortega Survival club" by Sonora Reys (same author of "The lesbianas guide to catholic school") and i loved it. main character is in the spectrum of autism, and has big talks on SA.

In June I went camping w 2 of my best friends and we all reread our favorite Sarah Dessen books that we used to read (separately, we didn’t know each other back then) as teens and it was so cute and fun! We each read 3-4 and I highly recommend revisiting teen faves cuz it was rlly a wholesome way to turn off my brain and enjoy reading. I just ordered bug boys and garlic and the witch is next on my list!

My favorite book I read in June was Foster by Claire Keegan it was soooooo sweet and simple. A very quick but very poignant read, and I’d say sort falls under the “grossness of girlhood” category. It’s about a young Irish girl who’s parents drop her off one day to live with this couple she’s never met. The writing is just gorgeous, perfect quick summer read!!

Hello! I want to comment about the "Winter" slump. I L O V E the quartet (quintet?) however, Winter is my least favorite. I only found some love for it after distance and a reread a year or so later. I loved Autumn and Spring. Spring, to me, is a sadder more ruminating space than Autumn, that looks more closely at grief and life and moving through both. It's the only one that made me openly sob. Summer brings all of the characters together (hello, beloved Mr. Gluck!), so I hope you can continue, but completely understand if the let down of Winter keeps you from doing so. Thank you for making Sunday's so joyful!

      @toddwonders4054 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

@@itmedana I've read them three times now and I always go Autumn, Winter, Spring, Summer, Companion Piece. No reason other than it is publication order. I believe the general concensus is that Winter is "the best," but like Ally, I had a rough time with it and its not my fave by any stretch. It does have some really beautiful bits that actually make more sense upon reread.

My favourites from June were Our Wives under the Sea and the fifth part of The Adventure Zone grafic novel.
Our wives was such an interesting book even if there wasn't a real conclusion!

I fell in love with Autumn and was also extremely dissapointed with Winter, but I found Spring to be really, suprisingly, wonderfull. If you do decide to pick that one up someday I would advise you to give it a fair shot, because for me it took some time to understand what was even going on and I feared it was going to be another Winter, but once I got it, it was amazing.

I read The Seven Moons of Maali Almeida in June and it was a really unique reading experience! The book follows Maali a closeted photographer who prior to his untimely death was photographing the violent social political climate of 1980s Sri Lanka. In the process of figuring out how Maali ended up in afterlife limbo, the book takes a deep dive into the relationships he had and actions he took throughout his life.
It’s well written and a novel back drop for a story, but it was a lot of work getting my head around all the very important interpersonal/group dynamics. I’m still deciding how much I liked it, but I’m definitely glad I read it! I would recommend it!

i also read this in june and i have to bump this as a recommendation!! it was truly unlike anything i have read. it took a little bit to settle into the nooks and crannies of what was going on, but following maali and his interactions and relationships and narration just made it impossible for me to not love it. i loved the characterizations of all the people. a good balance between show and tell. it’s a new favorite for me.

wintering by katherine may doesn't focus on autism but has an autistic author and was so impactful for me when going through a hard time. it focuses on the importance of rest in nature, and the connection between humans and nature for mental health! hoping to get a tattoo of a dormouse because it's commentary on how sometimes, we need to treat ourselves like dormice -- feed ourselves well and rest intensely in the difficult months, if we can. so so sweet and i recommend to everyone

my favorite book of june was tress and the emerald sea by brandon sanderson!! the vibe is so different from sanderson's other works but i loved it. author's note said he got the idea from his wife after they watched the princess bride and his wife asked how would the movie be different if buttercup went after wesley instead of accepting his "death". there's a pirate sea adventure, girl coming into herself and deciding that she can't wait for others to do it for her, weird and wacky magical ocean, and a narrative voice that was funny and whimsical. so pleasantly surprised by this one.

I just read Normal People yesterday and loved it way more than I thought I would! I've been putting off any Sally Rooney since I just felt I wouldn't connect with her work. But I really did love Normal People! I know you didn't love Conversations with Friends or Beatuiful World Where are You (I haven't read either yet) but I've also heard that people often love one and dislike the other so I do think its worth giving Normal People a shot! Its filled with so many poignent vignettes and messy humanness. The tv show is also very well done and captured the book so well (most of the dialouge is taken directly from it).

Two books I read recently that I really enjoyed were 'Woman Eating' and 'The Queens of Sarmiento Park', highly recommend. I loved Autumn by Ali Smith, but I felt the same way as you about Winter 😅 I haven't read spring or summer, but I really liked Artful and Hotel World.

I love your reading recaps! My TBR is screaming at me though... I definitely don't need to be adding more books to it. Are you planning on reading Pageboy? I'd love to hear your opinion on it.

I’ve also found myself in my era of devouring the Grossness of Girlhood™️ books and some of my favourite reads this year from this niche are:
    ‘Chouette’ by Claire Oshetsky 🦉
‘Woman Eating’ by Claire Kohda 🩸
‘Wilder Girls’ by Rory Power ⚠️
‘House of Hollow’ by Krystal Sutherland 🌸

If you're trying to read more sci-fi, I think you'd really enjoy The Murderbot Diaries by Martha Wells. It's a series of fairly short books that are super fun while diving in to some profound topics like what makes a person a person and who deserves self determination etc.

Dogs of Summer was my absolute favorite last month !! It reminded me a lot of another one of my favorite books so far this year, Jawbone by Monica Ojeda. Jawbone has many similar themes (gross girls - one obsessed with the other) as Dogs of Summer. It’s more of a literary horror and kind of a trickier format - would recommend looking at content warnings. It’s definitely not for everyone, but if you loved Dogs of Summer you might really enjoy Jawbone. Also - would recommend The Last Tale of the Flower Bride for some similar themes - this one is less gross girls and more just unhealthy female friendships in childhood 💗

My favorite read this month was Imogen Obviously by Becky Albertalli, but a close second is Vera Wong’s Unsolicited Advice for Murderers, both were stellar and I highly recommend 💗💗

I am here for the girl grossness era, i have no recs for that but it sounds oddly therapeutic? Also a rec i love that i think you would too - ''If You Look for Me, I Am Not Here' by Sarayu Srivatsa - it has questions on gender identity and sexuality, generational trauma, told from the viewpoint of a child, has a close kid friendship, asks profound questions in digestible ways, the writing is rich and beautiful AND it made me (a non crier) cry! I know you already have a big tbr but please try this one one day!

Favorite June read was “The Whispering Fog” by Landra Jennings. ‘A gorgeous, haunting read about sisterhood and finding your voice’ (fyi: the audiobook is fantastic)

I too loved Ali Smith’s Autumn and then struggled with Winter BUT Spring brought it back for me. It wasn’t quite on par with Autumn, but it was close!

When it comes to funny books I recently started 'In the Life of Puppets' by TJ Klune its a queer retelling of Pinnochio with robots! The dialoge is so funny and well written that I feel like I know the characters personally.

If you haven’t read it yet I absolutely recommend Kill The Farm Boy. It’s such a wonderfully written book and there’s always something to laugh at in each page. Although there were lots of moments when I had to pause my reading and pull out a dictionary, it took no time at all to re-immerse myself into the story

My favourite, even though I haven't finished it yet, is Babel by R.F. Kuang. I've been slowly reading it, savouring every chapter. I don't want it to end 😢
