what completely changed my perspective on poetry was learning that it sounds different in your head than it does spoken out loud. you can read it in privacy, but not like a secret.

girl, i feel you when i comes to nutrition. i was brainwashed by the "health and fitness" industry. (not saying you are brainwashed in any way) but i feel for you. i hope you are able to find someone who actually takes the time to work with you and listens and has empathy. nutrition and our bodies are so individual, no one knows your body better than you. sending you all the good vibes

listening to you talk about How Not to Die, I'm reminded of the time I was coding a doctor's dictation of a patient needing a triple bypass and in the history section it said the patient was a long distance runner, strict vegan, didn't drink/smoke/use substances, had gone abroad specifically to attend health conferences and workshops. I could almost hear the frustration of like "I DID EVERYTHING RIGHT" in the recounting.

I’ve just recently found your channel and we have a very similar taste in books. I’m wondering if you’d be interested in making a video on your favorite books that “celebrate mundanity.” I also realized recently these have always been my favorites, as well as movies that feature these (i think part of why I love Studio Ghibli).

Thank you for all your hard work to put out the videos, they always brighten up my sunday evening. Greetings from Munich, Germany!:)

Mike from the podcast hosts another tangential podcast called if books could kill, that goes over the "airplane books" pop nonfic that spread blatant misinformation and break it down from "there's nuance to this take" to "the study says the opposite of what the author claims it says" and it's done wonders for my critical thinking in the few episodes already out

I love the shout out to Maintenance Phase. It’s really so good. And I just have to say, How Not to Die is such a shitty title. It makes it seem like we are 100% in control of our health outcomes if we “take control” of our bodies, but that’s literally impossible. Genetics plays such a huge role. Socioeconomic status plays such a huge role. I’m not surprised the author was fatphobic and reductive. I’ll also add that rhetoric like that feeds directly into fatphobia by implying we all can look and be whatever size/level of health by just trying hard enough, which is the main point fatphobes love to lob at fat people. “Just try harder and eat better” is not helpful.

I definitely agree that its frustrating when doctors don't approach nutrition with nuance, since how your body processes food is such an individual experience, and labeling everything as strictly "healthy" or "unhealthy" isn't reasonable. In 2020, for about 8 months I was eating a vegan diet, and I ended up having to stop because I had b12 and iron deficiencies that weren't getting better by eating a variety of foods and consuming multiple supplements a day. I had to go back to eating meat, which I'd prefer to not to do for so many reasons, but clearly it's what my body needs.

I always appreciate your honest thoughts and feedback about your reading experiences! Hearing you talk about How Not to Die reminded me of a wonderful book I read a couple years ago. It has nothing to do with nutrition, but it WAS written by a medical Doctor. It's called The Deepest Well by Nadine Burke Harris, M.D., it is about "toxic stress" and how trauma is not always the "BIG T" kind but continues stressors (often associated with SES) can create similar responses and problems in our bodies/minds/lives. This book gave me similar vibes to Braiding Sweetgrass as far as Dr. Burke Harris's ability to use storytelling to explain complicated processes in the body and the human brain. I read if for a book club with other therapists and it was SO well liked by all of us. I highly recommend you give it a try and I would be so curious to hear your thoughts on it!

Hi, I was wondering if there's anymore recommendations for books about autism? I'm autistic and have been interested in reading more about autism to understand myself better but I don't really know what to get. I'm definitetly going to start with the one suggested here, I also have Odd Girl Out: An Autistic Woman in a Neurotypical World which I have yet to read but I kind of struggle with gender stuff so Unmasking Autism really appealed to me based on your description. I recently found your channel and I'm excited to watch more :)

I wanted the new Pokémon game, but I saw so many bad reviews - especially about the graphics - it scared me off. I ended up getting Arceus for Christmas in stead. So the new one is okay? And OMG the excerpt from your autism book is 100% my experience with ADHD. Didn’t learn I had that until I was 42.
Also, I constantly twirl my ponytail. People ask me how I get it to curl like that. ADHD, BABY!

the new one is very laggy and the graphics need work but she's still so much fun!

When will you read God of Small Things? Don't you want to be transported to the warm, tropical, small town in Kerala? And spend time with a funny and smart pair of twins? Don't you want the poetic prose to wash over you? All while you learn about the caste system and political situation in post colonial India!!
