- These hand independence exercises for jazz piano are designed to improve finger speed, hand separation and your overall ability to play with two hands. Whether or not jazz is your focus, you will learn to play piano with both hands in this lesson! As a Brad Mehldau fan, I've always been fascinated by his ability to play with two hands at once, improvising with his left hand while his right executes a complicated ostinato. If you want to learn how to play like Brad Mehldau, this video will really help you build on your hand separation ability, and these exercises are inspired by the jazz piano sound.

Yep feels like the upright is out of tune. Or it’s probably in tune just playing the key of B in the wrong key lol. Either way awesome video my man!!!!! Where do I get your exercising and what does it do for my fingers?

Kudos for the Video! Apologies for chiming in, I would love your opinion. Have you thought about - Riddleagan Smart Hands Remedy (probably on Google)? It is an awesome one of a kind product for learning piano fast minus the normal expense. Ive heard some decent things about it and my cooworker got amazing results with it.
Anyway, its easier to play it in b.

An exercise I practised on the bike: on the handlebar I tap with the L.H. the pattern [5-4-3-2-1-2-3-4-]* and in the R.H. the pattern [1-2-3-4-3-2-]*
Extremely difficult in the beginning, but after a while practising it you can do it without thinking.
Key with this exercise is 'Practice VERY slow at first'.
when someone talks about hand independence I always remember Jacob Koller. It looks like the guy has two brains: one for each hand. Thanks for the exercises btw.

I could tell just by your playing at the beginning that I was going to love this video. Do you have any tips on how to play melodically while also doing two-hand voicings? I find it difficult to think about melodies and do complex right hand techniques while also using the kinds of rich and varied voicings that tend to require both hands.
Hey Alex, thanks for watching! That's a good question. I think realistically, there's only so much you can do if you're using both your hands already for rich voicings. However, with that said, I sometimes use just my thumb and 2nd finger in my right hand to add a couple notes to a voicing, and then use my other three fingers to play melodies. Does that make sense? Also, don't forget about the sustain pedal. You can always play a nice voicing, hold the pedal, and then play a line over the top as long as it doesn't get muddy. Does that more or less answer your question?
@@NoahKellman Thanks! The three finger thing is especially helpful. I ask mainly because I have a book on jazz harmony that focuses primarily on building five note chords using both hands, and while the voicings are great, I often find myself wondering how I'm supposed to use them while working with melodies at the same time.
@@AlexG-bc7ji Oh I see! Yeah that's a great question. Especially for playing solo piano, I'll often play a chord and hold the sustain as I described above. I feel like that's a great method! Are you mainly wondering for solo piano, or for playing with a band as well?

Yeah great ears, Chris-- I just got it recently and it was completely out of tune, so we are tuning it up in increments each time we do a full tuning. Almost to 440...!

awesome vid, I've been playing classical piano for about 10 years so i picked up these exercises immediately with great ease, however I'm trying to get into jazz piano and my ear and improvisation skills are that of someone who's never played the piano. I can only read what's on a page. Any possible advice or links to help me achieve my dream of improvising, transcribing and arranging my favourite jazz standards?

At 4:00 I get out of whack. Is the right hand playing every 3rd note on the left? What is the left hand playing- are they quarter notes? I need something to compare them to each other. I get easily confused because I'm used to reading music but I do want to play more by ear...thanks

Keep it up, it’s well appreciated. You’ve probably done a lesson along these lines; harmonising simple melodies, work out the melody by ear and working left hand patterns and chords. Noob here! Frustrating I can’t even improvise with right hand to basic patterns in my left hand, so looking for these types of exercises. First one went rather well quickly, but second one is already destroying my head, so nice! This video will keep me busy for a while!

I was worried that this would be out of my pay grade, and definitely will give it a try. I liked the fact you kept in the mistakes. I subbed to your channel. I'm also unsubbing from the piano virtuosos that show exercises and are up and down the keyboard before I have time to find the C note.
I have a good friend in a big name band and he called me while I was doing scales. He said to practice slowly.

ArgoBeats it is actually, good call! When we first got it, it was so out of tune that our tuner recommended tuning it up in intervals to avoid breaking strings. I think the next tuning should bring it back up to 440!
