    Vince will always be the greatest coach to ever lead a team in the NFL. I wish I was old enough to have watched the Packer games in the 1960s. I was born in 1963 so I was very young when these events happened…Long live the coach in our hearts. BTW, I am a Cowboys fan who respects the coach…

    Fantastic Eulogy by the unforgettable Paul Harvey. In dedication to the greatest Football Coach the world will ever know. Saying that Vince Lombardi was no "Gentle Giant" is an understatement for the ages. A GIANT he was nonetheless. By teaching and motivating men to such a degree that they produced the finest standard of excellence in the history of the game. A Coach, a man and a team like no other.

      There's a story in the book by Dave Maraniss, When Pride Still Mattered, about a paperboy going to the Lombardi home to collect. The paperboy was so intimidated that he could hardly speak to Mr. Lombardi. Was that you?

      No that was not me I delivered the morning Milwaukee Journal to his house and never got to meet him his wife always paid me it could have been the Green Bay Press Gazette delivery boy or one of the other delivery boys that delivered to his first house when he lived on E Mission St,both houses were in the town of Allouez which is just south of Green Bay

    Vince Lombardi was before my time, but I can truly say that this man is still very much alive in the hearts of Wisconsinites and Packer fans everywhere. My parents still talk about him and how he ruled with an iron fist and a heart bigger than Wisconsin itself. If you've ever stepped into Lambeau you can still feel his presence on the field.

    • @jski7355
      @jski7355 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If you are a fan of football , although the Lombardi era might be before your time. Maybe you aren't a Packers fan .Still , you must go to Lambeau to a game Even if you don't see a game . Visit the grounds , stadium , GB HoF . It is self explanatory . Where pride still mattered on the field , not some Hollywood esq scenario with players celebrating every tackle ,first down , etc .Things a player gets paid handsomely for and it's part of their job .Like dancing to every fax that's sent to your office !!
      The experience represents what made the NFL what it is today . Those hard hitting players where playing was a " part time " job As they returned to their " real jobs" as soon as the season was over .OR they had Military Duty that required them to miss seasons !! In the NFL to serve their country
      Perhaps then , one may realize the evolution of the game ..

      Hi, JSKI. Still a Packers fan and have been to Lambeau on many an occasion. Sconnie girl through and through! And I agree with you - there is a massive sense of history there. I - and this is my own opinion - feel the game has strayed from its roots. It IS a Hollywood show. I frankly don’t care who is dating which actress and I care even less who spends four days sitting in the dark. The media surely doesn’t help matters, but I do long for the days of purity in sports. That being said, I’ll continue to cheer for the Pack, the Brewers, (not a basketball fan), and by golly, I wish we had a NHL team - it feels weird to cheer for the Blackhawks or the Wild. Regardless, your thoughts represent my household as well. Cheers to you.

    • @jski7355
      @jski7355 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@leslieu9092 Hey there , Old School ,smash mouth football .Played the game Have the missing teeth to go with it !! ! I guess I am to old fashioned .I do have a family tie to those great 60s teams under Lombardi .But , I must say my passions as a player and the route to excellence on the field is not really an issue in today's game .. The game itself is almost secondary .Seems no one wants to be a " team " player .Honestly, if I was good enough to play in the NFL I probably would do the same , getting paid the maximum at my position TE . Careers are short and there is always an up and coming younger player .Cant figure out why ARod was so pissed at the FO for drafting a QB .It happens to any player in whatever position they play .Its necessary to keep a competitive team ,via draft etc .ITs not an attack on the players performance Its. Just reality in today's " business first " game Trying to get good talent on a rookie contract . in my day it was if you said a name ,the team will be right there Now it's just where they are paying me the most . Football is a very unforgiving sport .Lose once and you are out .Its tough to see a player that has been valuable to whatever team Then they are suddenly gone .Whether it be a younger player , FA Acquisition, etc . Its sad to see that player leave your favorite team .As said ,Its more a business now , and a long time fan favorite is off to another team .Sad but it's reality .

    I remember the day he was announced as the Redskins' head coach in 1969. In his only year in DC, he turned a moribund no-talent team around and won seven-games, going 7-5-2. Then came the announcement of colon cancer and a Bill Austin took over for a year before Lombardi died.
    George Allen finished what Lombardi started, getting the Redskins to the Super Bowl in '72.

      I disagree. Vince Lombardi inherited 8 of his 9 hall of fame players that won him championships....Chuck Noll on the other hand- started with ZERO! NADA! The worst franchise in NFL football for 40 years. He was 1 and 13 in his first season and built from scratch the greatest football team in the history of organized football - the 1970's Pittsburgh Steelers - 24 Steelers won 4 SB's in 6 years and 8 of them are in the HOF (LC Greenwood will make it too one day) - try and find any other team in the history of the NFL to equal that stat - you will not (5 49ers won 4 in 8 years - thats the closest). Chuck Noll doesnt get anywhere near the credit he deserves because the media has put Lombardi on a pedastal. RIP Chuck Noll - the emperor of coaches.

    • @870Rem12gauge
      @870Rem12gauge 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Agreed. Shula going to Miami in 1970 inherited a similar team. Some good core players, and took them to an undefeated title and back to back Championships a couple years later.
      Similar to the early 60's Pack. Defense, ground game, sparse but solid passing attack.

When I look around at the world sometimes it seems an alien place and I am a stranger in this place.Most of the people who loved me best are gone.Im not bitter,such is the way of things.I come to this small technological sanctuary though and for a moment all the friendly ghosts of long ago are with me and I remember this America and for a few minutes I'm home.

Each morning before the bus got to the house we would be eating breakfast when his segment came on, and each day was another wonderful little nugget of information from Paul. His style, his delivery, it was unmatched and what a great radio personality he was. Never knew he did a Lombardi bit but its fitting that two large icons of the 60s are memorialized here.

    Not saying Chuck Noll wasn't a great coach, because he was, but consider everything Lombardi had to go through in order to get the position in Green Bay; years of having to prove himself, battling racism and critics. He was 41 when he was hired as coach of the Packers and within a year they had a winning record. Consider this, as well, look whose name is on those six trophies you have and any other team that has won them, and the legacy that it reflects.

    I thought Green Bay won 1 game in 1958, not 1959. If I'm not mistaken, 1959 was the first year Lombardi coached the Packers, and the next year, 1960, they were already playing for the NFL Championship. Then they won in all in 1961, and never lost another championship game the rest of Lombarit's tenure.
