"no mention of why the Irish were forced to migrate"
She does mention it, but probably takes her account from English history books-she calls it a "famine" instead of the genocide it was.
My English friends were amazed and shocked when I showed them how Ireland had plenty of food at the time the potato failed, but the English continued exporting the rest while starving 1M+ of the native population to death and forcing another 1M+ to emigrate.
There's never been a mention of this in English secondary school history books, altho it is apparently acknowledged in University-level history. Same can be said about Churchill's 1943 Bengal genocide, and countless others.
Anyone with doubts who wants to do quick research, I suggest checking out Sir Charles Trevelyan.

Notably, the first parade (1917) was over half a century after the 1840s famine. Many Irish had already moved across the Midwest and Great Plains. Those still on the seaboard had already established themselves in both enclaves and local government. Assimilation, or more accurately cultural diffusion since Irish culture heavily influenced the US as well, takes time.

Why do you show a modern day map of North and South Ireland @ 0.42 when you talk of emigration? Emigration happened way back when the entire land of Ireland was a single country governed by Great Britain. Emigration was also a consequence of how they governed the country through religious and political suppression and a landlord system of induced poverty, principally by British landlords.

“St Patrick’s Day as we know it was invented in America”. Only a British magazine could come up with this cynical tripe. St Patrick’s Day has been a religious and secular day of celebration among the Irish for centuries. Whether the our Irish contingent in the US added marching bands to it is irrelevant- the feast day of St Patrick AND the communal celebrations are much much older than the United States. I get that the Economist was just trying to put an economic history spin on things, but this is a very poor advertisement for its journalism. Which in this case is third rate at best.

The Irish are Absolutely Amazing I mean c’mon
    A gay conservative Prime Minister
    Virtually no homelessness and unemployment
    Booming businesses
    Fantastic business market
    Strong voice in the EU
    Beautiful landscapes
    Strong vibrant culture
Far more inclusive and respectful than twenty, thirty years ago
I mean frankly who wouldn’t be extremely proud to be Irish right now.

Today As You All Become Irish
    For The Day
    Please Take Note
St Patrick Was Welsh Not Irish
    Wales Was Part Of Britain
    Patrick Was Kidnapped
    Taken To Ireland By Raiders
    Patrick Escaped Ireland
    Became An Educated Christian
    Not A Roman Catholic
    He Returned To Ireland
    Spread Christianity
    Banished Snakes
    Died Became St Patrick
    Patron Saint Of All Ireland
The Republic Of Ireland Didn't Exist In Patrick's Time
    Ulster The Province Did
    He Lived In Ulster
    And Died In Ulster
    Is Buried In Ulster
The Flag Of St Patrick Is A
    Red Diagonal Cross
    On White Background
    It Is Incorporated In
The Union Flag Of The UK
    The Irish Tricolour Is Not
    The Flag Of St Patrick
    It Is The Flag Of
    The Irish Republic
So As You All Drink Guinness Today Remember The Family Behind Guinness Were Proud Unionists Against The Creation Of The Irish Free State
And Helped Fund The UVF Bring Weapons To Ulster To Defeat Home Rule
And Guinness Sacked Those Involved In The Nationalist Republican Movement Involved In Easter Rising
The Tricolour With Its Green White And Orange Was Adopted By Republicans Who Have Murdered Thousands Of British People Over The Last Century
So Enjoy Your Day Drinking Unionist Guinness
And Draped In A Flag Nothing To Do With St Patrick
    HAPPY ST PATRICKS DAY

In a two minute video, it pays to quickly mention the origins and then skip to modern times. It would have been nice if they mentioned how the groundwork was lain in all these countries for the idea of a saint's day, but it was exported from an economic sense as a marketed "drinking holiday," and since this is The Economist that's the angle they took.
I kind of hate it too, but a lot of things that reach into the humanities just take one view and hope someone else picks up the other details.

My American friends are shocked to discover that in my small village in the West of Ireland we begin the day BY GOING TO MASS! And the parade is largely children walking down and then up the one road in the center of town. We are right by Croagh Patrick. Also - he was Roman, making him Italian not Irish. So many questions. But it's nice that everyone in the world is Irish for one day. I can't think of another culture that would be so globally popular. The world could use a day of craic (Irish for fun).
