After seeing hundreds of "masters" and "master classes" performing this in big audiences or on high studio quality I have to say: This is still the best version ever drummed on youtube. I have played this myself 20 years ago and it was hell of a ride. I was 15 back then, and after watching this 16 years ago, when it came out, I already knew, that this kid got it perfectly right. Todays drummers miss the parts "soul" and "time", the stress out too much, while this boy keeps his peace, even though he is fast, but not TOO fast.
what i like is that he is focusing more on dynamics than the last one. good job. i sence a future dci hall of famer. ill buy your signature sticks once they are out
Guys, I can't believe some of you think this is fake. Look at some of his other videos, he CLEARLY has displayed that he is capable of playing at this kind of level. Listen to his dog bark...its the same pitch while Jay is playing and at the end of the video where Jay says "thank you". Stop calling this video a fake and start appreciating his talent.
I cannot wait to see this kid in DCI. He will be the biggest name and we all know that. Even if this were sped up, which I can already tell it isnt, this kid will smoke when he gets that age. Ive been playing for 7 years and am lookin to get into dci this year and this kid can still smoke me any day of the week. Kudos dude!
good job, i have been playing tenors for the past 4 years and been playing drums or the past 15 years, ur very good for your age u have the skill of most high scool drumers, i cant wait to see u whn ur n college. keep u the good work
2016 now. Aged 12 in 2008, so he is now 20!. Where is this talented young man now? I don´t think that there is another 12 yr old in TH-cam demonstrating this difficult drum solo... Somebody may prove me wrong with a link here??? I also believe that he posted this solo when he was much younger.
Man, this kid is amazing. Let's stop hatin on him. I studied music ed for some time now and I must say, i am impressed. The vid is NOT SPED UP, because the sound would also be distorted. Also, the animal walking in the background would appear to be on crack. Let's face it. This kid is the TRUTH. Teh sickness! Everything we say good about grown up drummers. Keep your eye out for him. He's gonna be a monster in a few years!!!!
Young Man... you are truly clean and articulate. I wished that you would also post this solo with a "real" snare drum. I am presently teaching this solo here in Mexico to aspiring young percussionists willing to audition for a very prestigious Youth Orchestra and I am telling to watch your video being one of the very best examples on TH-cam. God Bless You.
im thinking about doing this for solo and ensemble. this video inspired me to try. i just wish i had the chops for the eights at the end.... jay you're one crazy dude
wow.. God has given you an amazing talent I love drums and I'm so thankful that God let us have such an amazing instrument to create such beautiful music.. PRAISE JESUS JESUS LOVES YOU ALL SOOOO MUCH
@DrumMaster32396 Thanks for the comment. Nothing is sped up or altered in any way; trust me. That is a four lane avenue way in the back. At that distance and in that small viewing window, cars that are going about 45 mph will appear to me moving extremely fast in that small, distant viewing window.
Sorry that I missed your question and am replying so late. But hopefully reading the initial comments again and reading the continued exchange either shed some light on or answered your question. Take care!
That is a fair question. No, there is not another kid that we know of as you described. I mentioned "young side of" in this video, because it is not exactly a two year comparative of the other Tornado video. I also mentioned it, because I get a lot of questions from people wanting to know Jay's exact age. So, instead of sharing that, which is not appropriate to put out on the net in public or just to anyone, we just say things like "young side" or "early part" etc. Thanks for watching!
As I have said before- no part of any of Jay's vids are sped up or altered in any way. What would be the point? Why would I set my son up for failure when he is out and about, playing at various events and camps by speeding up his vids? I do not even know or care to know how to speed up a vid and doubt if my inexpensive camera has that capability. But, I do appreciate you watching Jay's vid. Thanks.
agreed. he looks almost like his left hand and are are tensing up when play a lot of tight rolls and flam stuff back and forth, yet, it sounds like he's in control and his tone is solid. Great job! a loooottt better than i am lol.
Hi jay and dad, im a very interested viewer that has been watching your son, and his impetual drum skills, he is very amazing, and i just wanted 2 say, if he keeps up his learning, like this, he will be the best there is ever to lived, im not joking, for example, scott johnson, blue devils instructor. your son will be 20X better, u are a trully blessed man, just remember when he is 14 years of age, take him to Bd percussion tryouts, he will make it
if he does march at all at this point in time i would be happy if you could post a video of him marching. No reason i just wanted to see him in that area as well but man kid you ARE really something!
None of Jay's vids are sped up or altered. There is a street behind the white fence. You'll see a car moving fast, as cars do, at around the 26 second mark, as Jay is talking and moving at the speed that people normally move and talk. You will then see cars go by (in both directions) on that street, as the first one did, from time to time throughout the video.
You are right- I would not bother to alter Jay's vids- Why? How? What would be the point? Between the trees and just behind the fence on the upper left is a boulevard- a wide two-way four lane street with a median in the middle. Cars will appear to move really fast within that small stationary window.
ok for anyone who thinks this is fake just look at the background if it was fake or sped up, u would see the things in the background moving fast but there not, tthis dude is just awesome! haha
This was the auditioning piece my drum instructor used to get into the Cavies. Nice job. Take a look at flam-I-am. Its a cool piece if you're interested.
As previously discussed, we look forward to seeing your Tornado video (including your "taps") soon. Let us know when it is posted. Thanks for watching!
None of Jay's vids are sped up or altered in any way. There is a street (two-way) behind the fence and trees in the left-hand corner. On occasion in this vid, there are cars going by. Even when he is playing slow at times throughout the video, there are cars going by on occasion. Thanks for watching.
This is Jay,not my dad. Thanks for watching and I appreciate your comments. But I am enjoying what I'm doing, the sun was just in my eyes.I haven't been working on drumset since the last video, but I'll get back on it later this summer.
He has a life. Jay is a typical kid- spends more time outside of school and homework playing video games and sleeping than anything else. For the most part during school, he practices percussion on weekends only, and only for about 2 or 3 hours total (this includes all a combination of all percussion instruments and piano, as he decides). And since he has started playing sax, he may not be practicing percussion as much as I just mentioned. Jay attends public school. Thanks for watching!
Jay and I talked about how much this means coming from you (or someone like you)- given your drumming experience (the little that I know of it). He appreciates your comment.
Wow, you replied to your own post- is it that particular dynamic that important to you? Well, he is aware of that dynamic, and did bring the volume and height down- he just did not crescendo (back up) as high (or noticeably higher) or maybe he shifted his playing zones a bit and the effect in volume and/or sound was not as noticeable on the pad as it would have been on a drum or maybe he just forgot to take it up this run-through.
Two part answer to your comments about Jay's left trad technique: 1. It is something that he is aware of, is working on, and is improving, amongst other aspects of his playing. But given his age and ability, it is not a big deal to us. 2. Most snare drummers that are playing really fast on the left side with trad grip use an open hand technique. But it is not as noticeable because they tuck or curl their fingers back- but the palm is still open. Take a second look at some DCI I&E solos.
man this kid looks like he is sped up in the sextuplet backsticking part. oh my god so awesome i am working on this solo now and im 17 and i only have it cleanly up to 80bpm! but how does he do the last three measures of the sextuplet back sticking part so fast where there is the back sticking going into the flam where its 5 lefts in a row i hope he lets you still post vids of him when he is older and playin in blue devils or whatever corps he wants to be in keep it up kid! oh ill take tips too!
His favorite is SCV. He also likes Phantom, Blue Devils, Blue Coats, and Cavies. If he appears to be ready when he is eligible (playing, marching, maturity) in about 3 years, we will allow him to audition for SCV (or any other corps.). But, he still prefers mallets, so he may be more interested in playing in the pit when that time comes. Also, depending on his size and ability to march (small for his age), he may be better suited for the pit, especially during his younger years of eligibility.
You've never said "lets see you do better", but you did say "we look forward to seeing your Tornado video (including your "taps") soon. Let us know when it is posted. ". Could you please answer my question a few comments back because I still dont understand why you replied that way.
I do not allow Jay full access to the site/internet due to the content and his age. No, you will not see a vid of me playing Tornado. So, besides a little playing in the context that I have posted before, do not expect to see anything substantial from me. Since I am not a pro, am rarely well-practiced, and know that my time has passed, you will not see much from me. Now, Jay and I will perform a duet of Downfall of Paris, him playing mallets, while I play the snare part later this summer.
Has Jay said at all what he's going into when he gets to high school marching band? From your videos, it's looks like he has a long future in either snare, tenors, mallets, or even a wind instrument. He looks like a future center snare to me, but he will probably prosper in whatever he dedicates himself to. Great videos!
Hopefully this won't disappoint you- marking time and feet, will not be a problem for Jay. He will not need any luck there. Now, he may need some luck in the height and size department when it comes to the physical aspects of marching at the highest levels (top DCI groups). Also, some decision-makers with high-level DCI corps may have a problem with his height in placing him on a snare line; particularly at/near center. All of this assumes no unexpected or significant growth spurt.
Great job! You definitely have improved over the years. The only thing I would suggest is to open up your arms a bit more, the left elbow seems to be glued to your side, it'll give you a more polished look. That's probably the only picky detail I noticed. Tempo was consistent, I liked that. If anyone feels different, feel free to refute me, as this is just my opinion.
My kid goes to various music camps, drum camps, TMEA music events, and has actually started playing in contests, why would I speed up his vids and set him up for embarrasment when he is out there drumming. He has worked with or played for Marty Hurley, Dr. John Wooton, Ralph Hardimon, and several other prominent percussionist- feel free to ask them if this is sped up. What purpose would speeding up a young kid's video serve? Is there some money in that out there in that? Am I missing something?
Nice! I see a lot of improvement since the last video. One thing I would suggest is using your wrists rather than your arms to move the stick. You get a lot more control that way. But keep up the good work!
Man you're so good, This solo is really hard to play and it looks like you play it with 2 eyes closed:)You play like it looks easy, but it isn't, keep on drumming, I do too:)
Please don't take this as a negative comment, but I see all of these comments about how he's going to march BD or w/e. I'm just curious as to how he plays with a line. So far it doesn't seem like he ever has. I'm not questioning the fact that he'll be able to, I'm just saying the listening in factor is big in drum corps auditions. That's all. But yes, he's incredibly talented for his age.
In reading and comprehending my words as simply and clearly said, most people would correctly conclude that my comments were part of an ongoing conversation- clearly indicated by me starting with "As previously discussed". So, when he commented as he did, it was obvious that he had some preconceived issues- insecurities, being my first thought since my comment (to the other poster) did not warrant that kind of response. But he clarified what his issue and/or misunderstanding was.
just one last thing... i dont mean to be rude...but did you speed this up? look at 4:01 and 4:18...that thing in the back behind the fence zooms by at an incredibly fast pace...
After seeing hundreds of "masters" and "master classes" performing this in big audiences or on high studio quality I have to say: This is still the best version ever drummed on youtube. Great chops, the paradiddles were so smooth, that was awesome

His techniques improved and he doesn't look like he's struggling quite as much. great job! keep it up!
its cool how you guys grow up older in these videos im also a drummer great job man

Daaaaammmnnn that was fantastic. This was from a while ago too, I wonder how kickass he is now
U r awesome
i have watched all of ur videos several times and u amaze me
and i look forward to u growing older so i can see u in DCI
Really great, classy performance. Nice work man.

tornado is crazy... I can barely play it at 100 bpm. This kid is so pro.
im thinking about doing this for solo and ensemble. this video inspired me to try. i just wish i had the chops for the eights at the end.... jay you're one crazy dude
wow.. God has given you an amazing talent
I love drums and I'm so thankful that God let us have such an amazing instrument to create such beautiful music..

Jay ur a beast! You are (were) so young too. Keep it up!
Another one of my students whose found greatness.

it doesnt matter if it was sped up or not...it was super clean!
Awesome job Jay, keep it up!

JESUS DUDE!!!! My lil bro luvs the drums alot and he wanna know where u learned how to play so well.
@mabak247 snare solos generally aren't played with marking time, but you do have a good point about the importance of marking time.
Awesome! Keep practicing. You have a great future ahead of you.
totally awesome. blew my mind
ok for anyone who thinks this is fake just look at the background if it was fake or sped up, u would see the things in the background moving fast but there not, tthis dude is just awesome! haha

very nice backsticking section!!
This kid is a future DCI legend!
AMAZING!
Nice job, Jay!!!! My objective opinion & suggestion is to keep playing no matter what. Cool!!!
Very gifted :) props 👏👏👏
Jay and I talked about how much this means coming from you (or someone like you)- given your drumming experience (the little that I know of it). He appreciates your comment.
great job!
dude this is awesome!
i wanna know where u can find this sheet music to download so i can try this out!
wow kid yo chops is amazing and yea ide say ttly keep up the work

A lot of difference two years make. Keep at it Jay! Like you I'm practicing, although it's a different kind of art I'm doing.
hahahaha shelbie is so cute. i am really jealous that you can play tornado and can do a ratamucue that well :-)
you are sick kid and you got major chops
@DrumMaster32396 yeah, it kinda threw me off at that part too, but if you see the dog in the background, he's moving normal speed.
@SuperControlRoom he was like 10 when he first did the solo, so your point is?
Me again(Jay).Have fun playing Tornado.I'm looking forward to it.
damn son! ima freshman n college at University of Louisiana n Monroe and I'll give it 2 ya dogg, u can prolly beat me. Hats off good job lil man
I wouldn't say parallel, because you need a slight angle towards the head, but the left hand is a bit high. ... but your flams sound really good.
man this kid looks like he is sped up in the sextuplet backsticking part. oh my god so awesome i am working on this solo now and im 17 and i only have it cleanly up to 80bpm! but how does he do the last three measures of the sextuplet back sticking part so fast where there is the back sticking going into the flam where its 5 lefts in a row i hope he lets you still post vids of him when he is older and playin in blue devils or whatever corps he wants to be in keep it up kid! oh ill take tips too!
omg his backsticking is great and fast as hell!!!
This boy is going places. I wish I knew what he knew when I was his age.
Yes he does.
Seriously, you guys should do that

In this video he is using a Heavy Hitter Slim Pad with the attached laminate.
You've never said "lets see you do better", but you did say "we look forward to seeing your Tornado video (including your "taps") soon. Let us know when it is posted. ".
Could you please answer my question a few comments back because I still dont understand why you replied that way.
For Jay's next amazing undertaking i'd love to see a quad solo, like rapid form by tim jackson, that would be awesome.
I do not allow Jay full access to the site/internet due to the content and his age. No, you will not see a vid of me playing Tornado. What the hell I'm 15 and just now getting this piece
this kid is the man
What is it about AjaxHammer6's replay that makes you think he has insecurities about himself and drumming ?
the whip is legit, it allows you to get the most out of each motion
HECK YA! This Kid is freaking good!
Nice word play. Jay said thanks!
Jay is very talented, has he considered playing ditty?
Impressive!!!
how come he doesnt crescendo like it says so during the flam drag part?
If anyone feels different, feel free to refute me, as this is just my opinion.
whoa good.. who'd u learn from :O
Great Job, kid!
Am I missing something?
you're so good :) keep it up.
i also love you're manners.
it's so cute! :D
Nice! I see a lot of improvement since the last video. One thing I would suggest is using your wrists rather than your arms to move the stick. You get a lot more control that way. But keep up the good work!
Awesome. Can u send me music for this?
Man you're so good, This solo is really hard to play and it looks like you play it with 2 eyes closed:)You play like it looks easy, but it isn't, keep on drumming, I do too:)
great job, you are one heck of a percussionist, keep it up, try some timpani and 4 mallet percussion, oh and i love the tenor solos
That's all.
But yes, he's incredibly talented for his age.
does your left arm hurt?? cause i know mine would if i was playing like that
When I watche dthe first video, I thought that there is no way he can improve because that was so good. But he did!!! Good Job!
In reading and comprehending my words as simply and clearly said, most people would correctly conclude that my comments were part of an ongoing conversation- clearly indicated by me starting with "As previously discussed". you disabled comments on the original so I had to ask on this one
is that riverdale elementary like riverdale maryland?
well why is it that this is the only vid where he shows the tempo? and how could u not tell that its sped up? look at the way he moves at 3:48 to 4:02
just one last thing...
i dont mean to be rude...but did you speed this up?
look at 4:01 and 4:18...that thing in the back behind the fence zooms by at an incredibly fast pace...
