Rewatching Superman (1978). Look, up in the sky! Always fun to revisit a classic I saw as a kid and realize how little I recall of it. I DEFINITELY merged 1 and 2 in my head and remember 2 better, which will make it more fun to finally see the Donner cut next week. Superman is by FAR the most idealistic superhero ever created. I'm not sure I'd really want him any other way! I hope you enjoyed my Superman movie reaction & commentary

Unlike others, I grew up thinking the movie was corny. In my twenties I revisited it, and I discovered that what I had been responding to was earnestness. This is a film that chooses to embrace a degree of innocence and wonder without cynicism or irony. I've come to cherish the film. It is full of small character details and moments of remarkable emotional impact. Reeve, Hackman and Kidder are rightly praised for their work, but I like to single out Glenn Ford for his warm and, ultimately, devastating performance in only two brief scenes as Jonathan Kent.

I highly recommend the 3 hour extended edition!
This was the edited for broadcast TV version and the version I grew watching.
With commercials this made the movie 4 hours long so ABC cut it into 2 parts to spread it over 2 nights.
We recorded this on Betamax when I was a little kid and I watched this so much I almost wore the tape out.
Later on, when I would see the theatrical version of the movie on channels like HBO, I'd get upset because, to me, it seemed like they were chopping pieces out of the film, I didn't understand then about theatrical cuts and extended cuts.
The extended cut does make the movie feel needlessly drawn out in some places, but in other places it gives added meaning to certain scenes or even introduces new elements. In some places it's like "how could they have cut this out of theatrical?!!"
      Anyway, it's really worth it!
Superman is in my top 5 favorite movies of all time, so glad you enjoyed it!!!
      Best Regards!

Classic that still holds up imo. I think too many people remember Reeve's wide-eyed optimism but not the 70's cynicism he turns out to be the antidote to. Great stuff. And yeah, chase down that super-long tv cut someday if you want more. The theatrical cut dropped a lot of fun little scenes that probably would have been kept in if the movie were made today.

*Don't be scared to criticise modern garbage ...* which applies to basically everything coming from Disney (M-She-U, Star Wars, Indiana Jones) and WB (DCU, Harry Potter) with very VERY few exceptions. There are many channels analysing the stupidity and IDEOLOGICAL PERVERSION of movies / franchises through Hollywood ... and they make good, logic-based arguments while the companies can only answer with thought-terminating clichés (which arent arguments).

There are two truly stand out moments in this film from Christopher Reeve. The first is when he transforms from Nerdy Clark Kent into Superman by simply changing his posture and lowering his voice and speaking with confidence, only to rapidly reverse it. Amazing. And the second is the rage and grief on his face as he begins his journey to turn back time after Lois' death and that yell of his. I don't think anyone has ever come quite as close as he did at being both Clark and Superman.

Superman with Christopher Reeves was the G.O.A.T. greatest of all time, he was so graceful on those wires that you look like he was truly flying. The perfect Superman, Henry Cavill a close second. Brandon Roth played a good Christopher Reeve as Superman. All very interesting

Chris! Your comments about Christopher Reeve's portrayal as Clark are very well-taken. So many reactors ask, "Gee, they're just glasses." But you notice in the scene after Superman's taken Lois flying, Clark shows up at the apartment all slumped over. He then thinks, just for a second, he'd like to let Lois know who he is; and he bolts straight up, chest out. Then he thinks twice and puts his glasses back on. Yes. you're right. It's his whole mien when he's Clark, meek and mild. Very good point.

"I'm here to fight for truth, justice and the *American* way."
Fun Fact: To obtain the musculature to convincingly play Superman, Christopher Reeve underwent a bodybuilding regime supervised by David Prowse, the man who played Darth Vader in the original Star Wars trilogy.
Difficult Actor Fact: Marlon Brando became notoriously difficult to work with in his later years (See: Apocalypse Now (1979)). He refused to memorize most of his lines in advance. In the scene where he puts infant Kal-El into the escape pod, he was actually reading his lines from the diaper of the baby. He told director Richard Donner that the only way to keep his performance fresh, and not over rehearsed, was to record the first time he read the lines. This was the only take.
Reverse Adaptation Fact: It was Marlon Brando's idea to have Jor-El wear the same "S" symbol on his clothes that Kal-El would later wear as Superman. The "S" that Marlon Brando wears on his white cloak looks the same as the one used in the television show Adventures Of Superman (1952); this was probably an homage. Since this film, the idea of the "S" symbol being a Kryptonian family crest of the House of El has been incorporated into Superman's comic books and subsequent adaptations.

I LOVE your insights! You are dead on about Reeves performance as Clark. I believe he's the only Superman who really has a solid Clark persona - not just a guy with glasses. I never realized how nuanced his character was until I saw this moment: 16:48. BRILLIANT! And, it's true, if they didn't spend so much time in the beginning - getting us to love Clark - the rest of the movies mean nothing to us.

The comic book at the beginning of Superman the Movie was drawn by Oliver Frey (uncredited) who drew it as a simple black ink mock up, but Richard Donner loved it immediately and used it without asking for the intended coloured version. Oliver died recently - I was at the funeral in September this year - and his funeral was televised to include all those, who couldn't attend, he'd influenced with his art and artistry that inspired so many graphic and computer game designers.

I was 19 when this movie came out. Most of the cast was already famous. Gene Hackman, Margot Kidder, Ned Beatty and Jackie Cooper. But few had ever heard of Chris Reeve. Needless to say, the movie was a hit. And I believe what sets this Superman movie above the rest was the performances. The characters all had such strong personalities. And the dialog was brilliant. Unlike the last few Supe movies with blah acting. And all of that stuff Superman did at the end, i.e. the saving of the school bus on the bridge, replacing a broken track with his body, creating a rockslide to stop a raging river all came from the comic books,

The script was written by Tom Mankiewicz who was a frequent contributor to the James Bond movies. Bond loves stabbing the villain’s ego saying there is no way he can accomplish their master plan, goading his rival to reveal his plan to him. It doesn’t hurt that the Bond villain like Luthor, is to Egotistical to believe his plan won’t work.

I am so glad you kept saying "I thought that happened in Superman 2!" because I kept thinking that throughout. Also, I never really understood what Clark Kent saw in Lois Lane. Lois is self-reliant enough to not be a codependent drag but still classically feminine enough to not be above needing saving. It's a good mix for someone like him. And I mean, he's pretty uncompromising about his beliefs himself. How those beliefs are different doesn't matter so much as Lois having a backbone.

I hope you'll be watching the theatrical cut of Superman II as well (so much better!).
    Martha's maiden name is Clark.
I do prefer the newer versions that have Clark get his abilities during and following puberty.
The little girl on the train was young Lois Lane. Her mother was played by Noel Neill, who had played Lois Lane in the 1948 and 1950 movies with Kirk Alyn as Superman, the actor playing her father, sitting across from her on the train. Neill also played Lois in seasons 2-6 of the 1950s TV series, and Lex Luthor's sugar mama in Superman Returns (2008). The 1950s TV Jimmy Olsen (Jack Larson) played a bartender in the latter film.
The voice of the young Clark Kent was dubbed by Christopher Reeve. You might recognize the actor, Lance Guest, from Halloween II (1981) or The Last Starfighter (1984).
Krypton has been gone for thousands of years due to the effects of relativity on Clark's space travel.
Lois's monolog was the lyrics to the song playing in the background of the flying scene.

One day I was in the tube (train), and stopped at a certain station in east London . In walked this majestic being… it was Terence Stamp! (General Zod). Train was had plenty of empty seats, but I couldn’t believe he came and sat next to me! I kept looking up at him and I looked around and no one battered an eyelid. I tried to be respectful and said hello. He nudged me and said ‘Hello you’ and asked what my name was. We chatted for about 6/7 stops (flew by). Talked about his childhood in East London and he was impressed that I knew this etc, then we exchanged how wonderful it was to chat and as I was leaving, he said “ goodbye and my name” he remembered. I was touched. I had a grin on my face for the rest of the day!

Kudos for knowing about the Donner version of the second movie. When he had a falling out with the Salkinds, the director they brought in to finish it (Richard Lester) just made stuff up. A prime example is the disappearing stuff in the Fortress of Solitude. What superpower was that. And Zod's pointing his finger at a civilian, lifting him up in the air. It's like he was directing a live-action cartoon with no canon.

I love the screenplay by Mario Puzo ( The Godfather). It allowed each character to be shown and understood without slapstick tropes. Lois is attractive without being a distraction. She has weird dietary habits and can't spell. Let Luthor is a ruthless villain whose main goal is real estate development. Foreshadowing Donald Trump. Christopher Reeve unstood that the character development was Clark Kent. He had to let the audience know and understand who that person is in their life. Clark is nice, does usual things like financially cares for his mother, says Swell, dresses like he is selling brushes door to door.

Hey Chris! Dude, you picked one of my favorites! This was literally the third movie I saw in a theater when I was 6 years old in 1978. I became a lifelong fn of Christopher Reeve as a result. I really like Henry Cavill and Brandon Routh...but Reeve will always be MY Superman. So...thanks for doing this one!
    - 2:34 - Richard Donner was filming 1 and 2 at the same time, long before anyone else would try to do it. The reason why there is a "Donner Cut" of 2 is that at a certain point the Salkinds (who were producing the films) had demanded Donner stop filming and finish the first film for release. They never gave Donner an exact budget, and the schedule was bloated because of the massive amount of effects shots needed. When the first film was a HUGE success, they fired Donner, and hired Richard Lester to finish 2...and he promptly changed things, keeping about a third of Donner's footage, I could be wrong on that but...everyone, including the late Richard Donner are convinced that had 1 tanked at the box office, they would have forced Donner to finish the second. The Salkinds were kinda slimy. There are lots of stories about their business dealings...almost none of them are flattering!
    - 5:32 - The lady next to the little girl on the train was Noel Neill, the actress who played Lois Lane in the 1950s opposite George Reeves as Superman.
    - 5:53 - Yes. The young Clark was played by Jeff East. However, Christopher Reeve dubbed all of the dialogue for him. East was actually blonde, so they have him in a wig.
    - 7:37 - Relativity. The distance between Krypton and Earth was traversed in about three years, which kept Kal-El small...but given the advanced tech of Krypton, it could have been several thousand light years distant from here.
    - 10:18 - The plainclothes cop is actor Steve Kahan. He shows up in quite a few of Richard Donner's movies, especially as Captain Ed Murphy in the 'Lethal Weapon' series. Kahan is also Donner's cousin, and this was his film debut.
    - 16:00 - The poem is actually a song, written by John Williams and Leslie Bricusse. Around the same time the movie came out, singer Maureen McGovern recorded it, and it is much, much better sung. I really dislike this part of the film. I wish they had used the McGovern version instead. Bricusse co-wrote the songs for 'Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory', the theme song to 'Goldfinger', and many other stage and screen musicals and stand-alone songs.
The commanding officer of the first missile convoy who did mouth-to-mouth with Miss Teschmacher was Larry Hagman, who was famous for the sitcom 'I Dream of Jeannie' in the 1960s and was about to become huge as the star of the prime-time soap 'Dallas' as J.R. Ewing.
The missile tech who tried to abort the missiles was John Ratzenberger, who was in a lot of films made in England at this time. He is best known for being know-it-all postman Cliff Klaven on the sitcom 'Cheers' as well as doing many voices for the Pixar animated films. He shows up again in 'Superman II', 'The Empire Strikes Back', and a few others.
Looking forward to 'The Donner Cut'...and 'Contact'.

Such a wholesome movie. It is a bit of a shame that the perceived silliness of comics plagued adaptations up until X-men and Spider-man (honorable mention to Unbreakable) but at least here the dynamic between Lois and Clark was very fittingly framed as an ode to 1930s-40s screwball comedies. Either way it is still a great movie.

Young Clark is played by an actor called Jeff (something I can't remember), and he was angry to find out that Christopher Reeve (RIP), the older Superman, replaced his voice acting. Clark is bumbling, slouching, stammering, etc... Superman doesn't. The glasses has (almost) nothing to do with his costume. Not to mention his Clark suit is larger than his Superman suit. "Can you read my mind" is actually a song sung by Maureen McGovern, Margot Kidder, however, had no singing voice.

In case no one else mentions it in the comments, the original end of this movie was to show the missile Superman tossed into space be the one which frees the Phantom Zone criminals - not an unrelated bomb added in by the new director Richard Lester to pad his own footage in to get the director's credit. Many people - including me - believe the unused Richard Donner footage (as used in the director's cut for II) was superior to Lester's patently more foolish story plots.

There's a lot more besides. As for the Donner cut of Superman II, I found it interesting to watch but ultimately inferior to the Lester version. Not to mention having the last scene, in the diner, actually make no sense in the context of the script. I won't spoil it, although the scene is in the Lester version, where it makes perfect sense.

One of my fave films of all-time. I saw this when it came out (I was 11) w/my dad. When Clark first changes into Superman and runs into a close-up revealing the S under his shirt the crowd ERUPTED! When he saves Lois in the helicopter EVERYONE was on their feet stomping them and cheering! I have NEVER had that kind of cinematic experience SINCE. *Goosebumps* Such an iconic turn by Christopher Lee (the ONLY Superman) and a great ensemble including Margot Kidder's feisty scatterbrained Lois Lane. The Gold Standard of all superhero films and all practical f/x! Gene Hackman having a field day as Lex Luthor is a hoot. My fave moment is when Lois has died and you see Superman's anguish zoom right into the sky - so emotional (and his memory of Jonathan's death 'All those powers; and I couldn't even save him' - oh and Martha Clark Kent - not her middle but her surname ;d) Great job Chris - glad you enjoyed this (again!) The Donner cut is great too & frankly all you need is the 1st sequel (the last 2 are terrible).

What a fun reaction! So happy you're watching the Donner cut of the second movie! In that cut, you will see the turning the world backwards: the two movies were filmed at the same time, and the turning the world backwards was supposed to originally be in the second movie, not the first! So that's the only "drawback" of the Superman II Donner cut. The improvements outweigh the one drawback and elevate what was for me always a disappointing sequel. (Gene Hackman still quit in the middle of Superman II, in protest of Donner's firing, so we can' t do anything about that!).

Second...Christopher Reeve...OMG, thy BEST Superman ever and such an amazing actor and real life human being. I'd get a Christmas card every year from him and his wife when they had started their foundation, that I had joined, after Christopher's accident. The cards continued after Christopher passed away with just Dana's name, keeping the foundation going, but unfortunately stopped after her passing. I was always excited about getting a card from them, like I was the only one ever...ya know. It was the closest I got to who I thought was a real Super Man. RIP Christopher and Dana
ANYWAY, I'm glad you went back and rewatched this and reacted to it. My first action hero!!
Just a HINT...there's a movie called Above Suspicion from 1995, where Christopher plays a paralyzed cop. The movie premiered on HBO on May 21, 1995. May 27, 1995, a week after the film's release, Reeve himself became a quadriplegic after suffering a spinal cord injury in a horse riding accident.
I can't wait to see more!!

I *think* Lois's "Can you read my mind" monologue is supposed to fit as lyrics to the tune that accompanies the scene. I feel a bit too awkward whenever I try to see if it fits, though. 😳😁
Hackensack wasn't an intended target. That was only a result of Otis messing up the coordinates, though Lex figured out afterwards where the wrong coordinates would send it. At least that's how I interpreted it. The missile that Miss Tessmacher (sp?) reprogrammed was the other one, which went to California as planned.
There was something to say about the "killing Lois and turning back time to save her" thing, but since you've decided to watch the Donner cut of Superman II, I think it's best to leave it until then. Let's just say that that was the first sign of Donner's conflict with the Salkinds.

The weird monologue Lois has in the sky was due to casting. At various times they were auditioning actresses who could sing, so they had Maestro John Williams to compose a song. Their ultimate choice, Margot Kidder, couldn't sing. Consequently, rather than dropping it, they made it more like a spoken-word poem.
Various fan editors over the years have substituted it with Maestro Williams' instrumental-only version. IMHO, the music-only version works better. However, over the years a number of singers have performed the original song. A good example is here:

I loved the original christopher reeve superman movie. the later instalments got gradually less good, but the first one was awesome, as is the score. I first saw it as a little girl in the 80's but the effects looked great even then, im actually surprised the movie is from '78 and not newer.
Reeve is pretty dashing as superman, well cast. He has this boyish quality that the, debatably more handsome, henry cavill superman lacks. (can i have both, mommy? LOL )
Reeves indeed acts the double character with clark kent rather well, although i always felt this movie's kent was a bit over the top weak and clumsy, like no normal man who is that helpless.
Apart from lois' death shocking me a bit bcs when i saw this movie i had never seen one of the good people die so graphically with her struggling under the rocks, I love the end where he arrives too late to save lois and just gets so emotional that his love makes him capable of flying off with a heart breaking scream and turning back time. "if i must face this reality, reality will have to make room, because im not having it" Whats more romantic than that?

@@Yngvarfo Personally I like the terrorist sequence in the theatrical cut, as it implied or added an offscreen backstory that took place after the first movie.
The second movie probably took place maybe a couple of years after the first one. People had gotten used to Superman and his exploits. Lois' reckless actions in hiding under the elevator implied she had done similar stunts before, and Superman had rescued her before more than once, which tied to her later observation that Clark was never around when Superman showed up.
