Johnny Cash legend. So painful to watch this, the last time he played his piano according to his daughter. After losing his wife June ( passed in May) six months earlier this song resonated with him to where he reached out to nine inch nails to do this cover.( He passed in September - his daughter said of broken heart) This man's life was epic. To hell and back, the man in Black his music will always live o n. Rest in Peace 🙏🌹 ❤️
You spoke of Johnny Cash eloquently. Thank you for your words. I agree that he died of a broken heart. The song was definitely a tribute to his beloved wife, June and his life.
She wasn't dead when he covered it. She's literally in the video... the actually, living woman. It was shot in February. She died 3 months after that. May isn't even 6 months before September! I mean, it's a great song and a touching video and cover, but the truth is poignant enough without changing the dates to make it more dramatic. It's not that hard to check this stuff.
The story behind this song is something every fan of music should hear. When he closes the piano at the end, the metaphor never fails to hit me in the gut. It’s like his song is over, so he puts it away and closes shop for the last time.
From Trent Reznor about Johnny Cash's version: "When Reznor was asked if Cash could cover his song, Reznor said he was "flattered" but worried that "the idea sounded a bit gimmicky." He became a fan of Cash's version, however, once he saw the music video. I pop the video in, and wow... Tears welling, silence, goose-bumps... Wow. [I felt like] I just lost my girlfriend, because that song isn't mine anymore... It really made me think about how powerful music is as a medium and art form. I wrote some words and music in my bedroom as a way of staying sane, about a bleak and desperate place I was in, totally isolated and alone. [Somehow] that winds up reinterpreted by a music legend from a radically different era/genre and still retains sincerity and meaning - different, but every bit as pure."
Went to one of his concerts as a child. Grew up knowing about his life all my life. He had many ups and downs. As we age we all look back at what we could have done differently. He changed his life for the better. Hope we all get the same opportunity. Great singer. Rest in peace Johnny & June
The last Supper of Johnny Cash. Johnny's Mother is in the picture hanging on the wall. His wife June who was terminally ill at the time, was on the staircase. She had come down during the video shoot to see if Johnny was OK. Mark Romanek who made the video asked that it be left in the video. Johnny later said this song was a goodbye postcard to June. She died within months of its making and Johnny, 6 months after her (friends/family said, from a broken heart).
I also loved Johnny's cover of "Personal Jesus" by Depeche Mode. As a believer, he flipped it: turned their mockery into a Gospel song, using their same song. 👊 RIP to The Man in Black.
I just realized what I like about this channel so much. It's like, you wanna show a music track to a friend and have them really actively listen and appreciate it with you, and this channel is like getting the sensation of them actually listening to it with you over and over.

I'm really glad to see you guys were so impressed by this song. Johnny's old, world-weary voice and the fact that it was recorded not long before his death make it even more powerful. The lady you see around the second time he sings "Everyone I know goes away in the end" was June Carter, his wife of many years and the love of his life. She'd passed away not long before this was recorded.
His voice may have changed some, but was still so recognizable. From his first until his last there is no question who is singing when it came to his voice
The first time I heard this song, I must have replayed it over a dozen times, and I cried each time. And I really hadn’t listened to Johnny Cash too much before- of course I knew of him, who he was, what he did- which made this song (and video) all the more moving. This song and video are masterpieces. Notice how affected and respectful the twins were - they knew this was a deep song, and once it got going, never turned the video off to comment. This video/song laid bare Johnny’s soul- a very brave thing to do, especially for a man with his reputation (as a badass)- and I think the twins recognized this song was more than just a song, but someone telling a story, and they Johnny Cash tell it to the end. Love them!
Mine to. Its moments that make your life. Not what kind of car you drove not how big your house was and all the shit in it . Its the moments ....I failed in that. And you can have it all my empire of dirt. I will let you down I will make you hurt . If I could start again......
TReznor wrote this song when he was deep in his addiction to heroin... The needle tears a hole. The old familiar sting. Try to kill it all away, but I remember everything. The lyrics point to shame, hopelessness, fear and regret. It’s one of those extremely sad songs that is so incredibly powerful. And then Mr Cash actually brings it to another level. One of my all time favs fosho
I think this cover is interesting because Johnny Cash knew this song on the addiction level as well. He was addicted to drugs and alcohol and so knew the pain that causes for the addict and those they love. His first wife and children suffered greatly because of it, as did his second wife, June. Would love to hear you guys do more Johnny Cash, maybe Folsom Prison Blues or Ring of Fire.
To me this song represents A man looking back on his life and realizing he wasted too much time on drugs and nonsense instead of treasuring life with family and true friends not fake friends who only want what they can get When I hear this song I cry for everyone who feels this way too. I was a drug addict for 20 years and I’m in very poor health now and all my true friends are dead and gone now and I never got to show them the sober real me. And to apologize for pushing them away when they were just trying to save me from self destructive behavior.
Oh this brought tears to my eyes. Big congratulations for being clean and sober Philip, that is amazing that you made it through. I don't know you, but I'm very proud of you, thank you for sharing.
The original singer/writer is from the group Nine Inch Nails and he wrote it specifically about his battle with drug addiction. While I prefer Johnny Cash's cover, I think, between NIN original message, and Cash having the age factor looking back on his long life, it just becomes all-encompassing and even more powerful.
“This is a Man’s song, a manly song!” Hell yeah dude. Johnny Cash was a legend. His performance of this song capped off a lifetime of musical achievement.
I cry every time I hear this song. And you guys were so respectful even if you didn't know the meaning behind the song or all the past images of Johnny and June.
You two kids are great. You nailed your description; this is a song for every man who's fucked up his life, then finally realised how much that shit costs. I'm old enough to be your grandpa, & this version of it still makes me cry too.
I notice you both got completely absorbed into that - profound words and simple music, and the emotions of a man reflecting on what life really means and what was meaningful. The kindness from another human being - his wife & best friend. And the way he closed that piano and lovingly brushed it down. Her music. Makes me weep. You felt it, hardly can put words to it... these songs have their imprint and then years later you realise you understood emotionally but could not process mentally... but you realise it had a truth when you have an experience ... and the song gets a deeper resonance for you.
Roisin O'Connor So True 100% like the Bible you may have read a certain verse many times then one day it takes on a new and deeper meaning just like this song it just keeps getting more precious every time , I’m so glad they reviewed this classic with open hearts and minds and felt some of what Johnny Cash and his lovely wife meant to millions of fans that loved them like as we still do 🙏
When I first heard this song I was about 24 and I thought I knew this song. I'm now 41 and every year this song means more and becomes more true to me. As I see friends and family pass and I grow older (still a young man from time to time lol) and supposedly wiser I can't even imagine the weight of this mans memories. I've done nothing extraordinary with my simple life and I have a ton of great memories and a ton more of regrets. I can't imagine his load. A true American original right there.
They felt it, understood SOME of it. But to truly understand and truly understand where he himself was coming from, they need to do a little reading up on Cash. Drugs, alcohol, a wild younger life with time spent in prison all regrets in his life.
Johnny Cash was a legend til the day he died. RIP to the man in black, one of country's original outlaws. If you want other classics from him try: The Man in Black, Folsom Prison Blues and Boy Named Sue
All great examples of his talents, I would add I Walk the Line, Sunday Morning Coming Down, Ballad of Ira Hayes, One Piece at a Time, Singin’ In Vietnam Talkin’ Blues.
Always get a tear in my eye when I see this video. The message, the timing of when he recorded it and his death. Just puts the stamp on Cash's crazy life and the lady who stood by him,
Johnny Cash has been singing his whole life. His life story is deep and tragic but also a beautiful portrait of human frailty and resilience. He has written so many incredible songs that many artists have covered, but he also covered a lot of artists' songs, right up to his last album. He could recognize a good song from any genre and would pay it respect by singing it.
I admit I’m not big into country, but Mr. Cash is on a whole nother wavelength from all genres. When I heard he died I started crying, right out in the open, driving down the street, crying. Guys, I continue to love the fact that you are both so open to every kind of artist ❤️

A few interesting details about this song: Johnny Cash had been a huge country/rock star from the 50's thru the 70's, his "American" series of albums was a critical/commercial resurgence in the 90's and "Hurt" is from the 4th volume of that series. "American" was a collaboration with super-producer Rick Rubin, who encouraged Cash to cover songs that he personally enjoyed as well as other songs of Rubin's choice, such as "Hurt" by Nine Inch Nails/Trent Reznor. Rick Rubin's first step in the music business was co-founding Def Jam records with Russel Simmons, and signing/producing such seminal hip-hop acts as the Beastie Boys, Run-DMC, Public Enemy, LL Cool J, and the Geto Boys. Rubin also helped the Red Hot Chili Peppers find their sound, and produced "21" by Adele. So yeah, this cover song is somehow a touchpoint for country, rap, alternative rock, and pop music. We are all one.

Dear God that cover of that song..as a man nearing 60.. recovered from a serious IV drug habit for over 20 years..I feel this one hard every time I hear it.. also a lifelong Cash fan
In my book the greatest song ever recorded. Its history is so awesome. Trent recorded this song as a kid. The song was brash, angry and frankly unappreciative of youth. It was youth not knowing the value of youth. Johnny sings it dying knowing what it is to really loose something. He changes a few words that demonstrates reverence for what is lost and the real value of time. The evolution of this song is like life it self.
I love that you’re both open and willing to listen to some of the greatest songs ever written and recorded, even if it is for your channel. I still appreciate and enjoy your reactions to hearing some legendary tunes!!
He had a bad boy/outlaw reputation. Led a hard life. That was his second wife June Carter Cash standing on the stairs. She passed away just before he did. Amazing song just makes you stop.
Johnny died 7 months after this... story of his life. "His frailty is clearly evident in the video. He died seven months later, on September 12; his wife, June Carter Cash, who is shown gazing at her husband in two sequences of the video, died on May 15 of the same year."
You might like his recording of the "Ballad of Ira Hayes," the story of a Pima Indian who helped lift the American flag in Iwo Jima. Johnny Cash descended from First Nation people.
I like what these two are up to; it is an interesting concept. Younger guys listening to some older classics without any "heads-up" as to what is coming. Two suggestions: 1. Spend more time on your experience of hearing the song, drill deep, tell us what you are hearing / feeling, and 2. After hearing the song, perform your own research as to what you heard and where the artist "was" in that period of his / her life. You guys take on the 2nd suggestion and within a few years you will expand your musical knowledge to such a degree you could do whatever you please in the music industry.

“That made me sneeze!”😂 There’s something about this that is very pure, which I love. Regarding older singers who still have it, check out recent releases from Lee Fields & The Expressions. He turned 70 earlier this year. Though Charles Bradley died a few years ago, he released 3 amazing soul albums before he died, with his first one coming out when he was 63, and one coming out posthumously.
He did so many great covers, showing his appreciation for a wide variety of musical genres. Another banger is "Personal Jesus" originally by Depeche Mode.
Johnny Cash had his own show on tv when I was growing up. He also had a heroin addiction in his past, so this song includid this element. He was a country singer with a bit of soul.

It hits me when you see scenes with her in it.. and knowing how he died not long after.
@@BeeWhistler THANK you!!!
His wife was there when they recorded the video. She's in the background. She died 7 mos after this.
Trent Reznor was meant to write this song, Johnny Cash was meant to sing it.
Amen!
Yes. I loved Trents version, but Johnny’s version comes from a much more meaningful and deeper place. It brings me to tears every time I hear it.
Amen!!
Facts
Ashlea Tucker omg we have the same first name... Twinsies bae 🤟🏽
Snoop Dog was a huge fan and called Johnny Cash "The Ultimate Ganster" :)
You asked how long he'd been singing, he made his first record 47 years before this.
*Gangster
"I shot a man in Reno, just to watch him die"
Everyone has to respect greatness
The story behind this song is something every fan of music should hear. When he closes the piano at the end, the metaphor never fails to hit me in the gut. It’s like his song is over, so he puts it away and closes shop for the last time.
I wish I could listen to Johnny Cash for the first time ever again.
From Trent Reznor about Johnny Cash's version:
"When Reznor was asked if Cash could cover his song, Reznor said he was "flattered" but worried that "the idea sounded a bit gimmicky." He became a fan of Cash's version, however, once he saw the music video.
I really like this version of Hurt. Johnny Cash is a legend. Rest in peace.
I can't listen to this song without tearing up. so much emotion.
I heard some sniffles
RIP to The Man in Black.
Not many songs can make me cry. This cover is one of them, even while watching a reaction video.
I have to admit this song really hits me hard.
The House that built me by Miranda Lambert and meanwhile back at mommy's by Tim McGraw
same. it's borderline inhuman to not cry to this song
@@profquad
If it doesn't hit you, you must be heartless.
I'm pretty certain that it made them cry as well.
Every single time. I made the mistake of reading the story behind the videos concept and shooting and now the tears just free flow whenever it plays.
The single word I would give to this song is: Haunting.
bingo - it drips pain
So much this
This song silences every man and makes them think about their mortality
Females too 🙋
TRUTH!!
It also brings to mind the pain over addiction and thouse lost because of it .
he said once. the saddest thing for him at the end of his career was sometimes playing in saloons for less than 10 people.
Makes it even more sad...
MUSIC LOVER man as in Human kind
I just realized what I like about this channel so much. It's like, you wanna show a music track to a friend and have them really actively listen and appreciate it with you, and this channel is like getting the sensation of them actually listening to it with you over and over.
"I don't know if this like rock, country.... I don't know." Most apt description of Johnny Cash without even listening to Johnny Cash
Johnny Cash was the original “Man in Black”. Check out his story, he is the original badass.
Yep. Live at San Quentin "suey".
💯
Agreed. Watch the movie Walk the Line, great movie with Joaquin Phoenix as Cash and Reese Witherspoon as June Carter. Both give an epic performance.
@@BaskingRunner yes! And what made it even better actors that played Johnny and June performed all the songs themselves and learned to play instruments from scratch too!
THIS!!!
My late son's favorite song. He was 20 when he passed away only 4 years ago. He fell in love with these lyrics at the age of 14. Breaks my heart he felt this way. Breaks me.
I am so sorry for your loss.
Oh Denise! I'm so sorry. You're comment in 5 short poignant sentences- just wrecked me. Devestating. Love to you.
Massive hugs
So sorry for your loss. Must have been a great young man.
Thank you for sharing.Let is help to honor your pain.We have so much work to do
Yeah he died just months after recording this song. One of the best covers ever
The first 10 times I listened to this song, it made cry like a baby. I love this song. You could see both of them trying really hard not to cry.
That was June on the stairs
She and Johnny died less than three weeks apart
Its because he was so old that he song like that. This is someone who has an intimate understanding of what Hurt actually is.
His voice may have changed some, but was still so recognizable. From his first until his last there is no question who is singing when it came to his voice
you know it’s good when they’re silent for the whole second half
Amen 🙏
That’s when you know it’s a solid song when it just makes everyone stop and listen. He always had that ability. Legend.
You should give Johnny's Live at Folsom Prison album a listen. He went into the prison and played for the inmates and it's a wild, wonderful album.
you will connect with it so you can keep it offline
Love them!
Seemed shocked and speechless at the end. It took them a moment.
Favorite line in any song - “and you could have it all my empire of dirt”
Mine to. Its moments that make your life. Not what kind of car you drove not how big your house was and all the shit in it . Its the moments ....I failed in that. And you can have it all my empire of dirt. I will let you down I will make you hurt . If I could start again......
That always resonates with me. That emphasis of what really matters.
Johnny Cash, irreplaceable man, irreplaceable voice. I can't watch this without crying 😭😭😭😭
I'm exactly the same. No matter where I am or what I'm doing, I tear up the second I hear those opening chords.
Me too, every time 💔
The power of this song is shown in how you're both just sat still listening and taking it in. It's a massively emotional song.
Total Respect
Glad y’all are Listening
Colette the ArtistCG thanks. I give god all the glory for being my savior.
My son passed away 2 years ago from drug addiction. It's heartbreaking. I am so glad you were able to stay clean.❤
It took his whole, lived life to earn the voice he sang this song with. Johnny moved mountains.
This song has just moved me to tears. You can hear the pain and wisdom in his voice. He lived an extraordinary and interesting life. Truly a legend.
@@shannaobrien5454 they might well have. The recent film is quite comprehensive.
@@chuckhouse5179 wow,has it been that long?!
Johnny Cash was a legend til the day he died. RIP to the man in black, one of country's original outlaws. If you want other classics from him try: The Man in Black, Folsom Prison Blues and Boy Named Sue
A boy named Sue is what got me hooked on Johnny
I love a Boy Named Sue
All great examples of his talents, I would add I Walk the Line, Sunday Morning Coming Down, Ballad of Ira Hayes, One Piece at a Time, Singin’ In Vietnam Talkin’ Blues.
Love "Boy Named Sue"! Shel Silverstein wrote it! Which makes total sense when you listen to it!
If you like this song then check out Nine Inch Nails who wrote and performed it first.
This video is art. Haunting.
Always get a tear in my eye when I see this video. The message, the timing of when he recorded it and his death. Just puts the stamp on Cash's crazy life and the lady who stood by him,
"Johnny Cash...I never heard of him..."
God DAMMIT I'm old.
Same, dude. Same.
This video are amazing for us teenagers, they help us to expand our music knowledge and taste
The Late Great Johnny Cash. This was his goodbye
Love Johnny Cash. Thanks for your' guys' respectful attitude. This was the first time you weren't joking around, but listened clearly and understood Johnny's serious message. That shows a lot for your good characters. I'm a grandma and love your reactions the first time you hear songs of the older generations. You guys are great! Like the boomers don't usually know about our parents' and grandfolks' music. We should.
Rick Rubin is The One of music lol.
You should listen to his "Ring of fire".
This song is about his life and all the hurt he caused his loved ones. Old but still able to grab once heart.
Actually June Carter wrote Ring of Fire. Johnny just sang it.
What Donna said - June wrote it and Johnny's cover is the most popular.
Ring of Fire is about falling in love. June wrote it about falling in love with Johnny.
My brother died at 15 RIP, he loved this tune. Johnny was a badass. I cry every time I listen to it. It is good to cry too. I am really enjoying your reaction videos lads.
My deepest condolences.
I'm so sorry, Molly💔💞
I'm so sorry for your loss. I love that good music brings you good memories ❤
This was the track on the Wolverine movie Logan over the closing credits. I was already weeping but this track broke my heart.
It's O.K. He's an X-Man and we all know X-Men never really die. Still a great movie and I agree I was tearing up and this song just broke me.
I love how these guys really listen to this !!!!!
Dear God that cover of that song..as a man nearing 60.. recovered from a serious IV drug habit for over 20 years..I feel this one hard every time I hear it.. also a lifelong Cash fan
Check out Johnny Cash: "Ring of Fire"! "Folsom Prison", and "I Walk the Line" both song & movie
Yes, they need to listen to his older songs.
Maybe they could just watch the movie with us bahahahaha
YES!!!!!
This song makes me tear up EVERY TIME! WOW!
Johnny Cash is a legend and this version of this song is painfully beautiful
If you like his voice now, try "Ring of Fire" written by his dear wife June Carter Cash.
Yes. Amazing that she actually wrote that song *about* him and not *for* him!
I love Ring of Fire😁
Didn't know his wife wrote Ring.....
This was Johnny's last song. Makes me tear up Everytime I hear it. Y'all should listen to him and his wife sing Jackson. Great song.
This song always makes me cry, and I could see it affecting you guys too. Glad you appreciated it.
Johnny died 7 months after this... story of his life.
"His frailty is clearly evident in the video. He died seven months later, on September 12; his wife, June Carter Cash, who is shown gazing at her husband in two sequences of the video, died on May 15 of the same year."
Nine Inch Nails heard his version and said it was his song now. He died shortly after this song released.
You might like his recording of the "Ballad of Ira Hayes," the story of a Pima Indian who helped lift the American flag in Iwo Jima. Johnny Cash descended from First Nation people.
Johnny Cash is a legend. This song always makes me cry.😢
The best watch to know Johnny is his song “Man in Black”.
Agreed - watch man in black.
Though i like a boy named sue for the comedic value.
In its own way, “A Boy Named Sue” is about hurt, too.
@@tomas22432 that song was written by shel Silverstein
My favorites of Johnny’s include ring of Fire, man in Black, Folsom prison blues, boy named Sue, & a duet with his wife if I were a carpenter
I love those and “God’s Gonna Cut You Down,” Belshazzar,” “The Fourth Man in the Fire,” “The Man Comes Around,” and “Daddy Sang Bass.”
And cocaine blue.
I was a sophomore in high school when Johnny Cash died, I remember that day so vividly. He needed to be with June.
Thanks for posting this, fellas. Loved the commentary.
I hear one of y'all sniffling! Thats right, song gonna get u. Gets me everytime.its very rare I listen to this version of hurt by Cash. So sad, I just start crying.
This made me cry today. He was THE legend.

I first ward this song when I was on my way to see my father for the last time. He passed away that evening. I can’t listen to it without tearing up and realizing how little time we have. I love watching people listen to this for the first time and respect it so much. Thank you, two.
“That made me sneeze!”😂
There’s something about this that is very pure, which I love.
I 💘 Johnny cash.this was his last video and i cry every time i watch this video.
IMO, this was the best music video of the decade
You made me laugh out loud when you said he made me sneeze!!! 😂🤧
I heard/saw this video in the halfway house just released from a 7 year drug sentence. It touched my soul.
Johnny Cash had his own show on tv when I was growing up. He also had a heroin addiction in his past, so this song includid this element. He was a country singer with a bit of soul.
