The biggest click moment for me and a lot of other players is the realization of what you are in the grand scheme of things. You are a throw away commander running a guerilla suicide mission in hostile territory. With that in mind you should throw away the notion of brute forcing your way up and take a step back and play as if you are fighting as an insurgent. After you have a firm grasp of the nuance of locating the enemies and using force projection like planes and missiles you can learn to be more bold in how you play the game. For beginners though i recommend the "less is more" approach. Pack light, keep your intel on other airial assets high, and dont get caught out. Less starting ships means better economy in the beginning and free economy lets you adapt to what that run will throw at you.

Very well stated. My first couple playthroughs were just steam rolling everyone with my flying deathbrick cruiser and hoping to be able to afford repairs. This isnt fun. I knew I was doing something wrong because theres no map control and you are practically flying blind and I knew this game wanted me to play more tactically because I had Silent Hunter-esque target plotting tools and radar and sonar and this radio. I mainly blame my first games approach on the tutorial because they don't tell you about missiles, that you can buy diffefent munitions, or aircraft. I thought splitting my fleet into groupss was only for getting sudden strike capability and didnt realize I coukd cover more ground with them and setup kill boxes for my aircraft and missiles to hunt down strike groups. The game is very interesting if you play it right, else it gets boring just taking city after city with your main fleet.

Very few indie games are made in Russia, but only a few can fly as high as Lightning in battle. The game has been developed since 15 by two programmers (not counting talented freelance artists and musicians). Please take into account.

Very nice and well-considered review- thanks for sharing. I put about 25 hours into Hightfleet, wanting to like it and trying to give it a fair chance. For me, it just never clicked. Big learning curve and small payoff. Interestingly, and unlike you, I didn't care for the combat- too arcade-like, for my taste. But that's just me. Different strokes for different folks. One thing I do not think you mentioned is the price. Just $29 on Steam at the time I bought it, which is not bad for a high-quality game.

I want to play this game somehow having already developed the deep instinctive familiarity that allows one to demonstrate elegance, but it feels as though I could start a real career in the navy with similar degrees of difficulty and commitment.
This is the type of game that would have been considered an instant masterpiece back in the days when you got one or two games a year (if you were lucky) and could commit significant fractions of your brain space to a single pursuit.

Great review. The immersion in this game is unreal good, especially the sound design like you mentioned.
I'm a bit confused by your mentioning the design aesthetic is cyberpunk. That's not how I would describe it at all. Cyberpunk is a futuristic aesthetic but with a retro (usually 80s) technology. So angular and modern but with garish accents like neon lighting. The design aesthetic of the HUD is much more gritty and completely analog and manual feeling. Reminds me more of a WWII-era submarine (which is how the gameplay feels to me as well).

Great review. Really well done. Love the game. I feel like its a great mash up of Silent Hunter 3, old school Elite Dangerous, and the Dune series.
The sound and visual effects are great. Really immersive and palpable. It's a great "Dad's" game. What I mean by that is the amount of layers there are to keep track of. The slow pace of the gameplay and the difficulty level of the game is something I love. It makes you slow down and take your time. Weighing your options and making good stratigic decisions. Managing fuel, munitions, repairs, and the rest is so fun. Its a great game if you are willing to make mistakes and learn from them. Each play through is unique and very challenging, and its this challenge, and a drive to be a better fleet commander, that keeps me pressing the NEW GAME button. This game is a true gem.
Thanks for all your time making such an outstanding review. Cheers

Unless it has changed and there are good tutorials this game will be 2 hours in youtube 20 mins of play, 1 hour youtube, 30 mins of play.
