    Yes, I realize this video is about awesome pistols in slow motion, but BY FAR my favorite thing about this video is my son. He's turned into an incredibly kind, fun and capable young man and I'm so proud of him. I'm quickly seeing him as a peer. His mind is a sponge and he's filling it with awesome things. He's fun to work with and brings a lot of joy to the game when he's involved. Thank you to everyone who supports Smarter Every Day on Patreon! (www.patreon.com/smartereveryday) By supporting on Patreon, whether you realize it or not you've helped make my son who he is. I've been able to spend more time with him and that investment has not returned void. Thank you so much!

      I remember videos from years ago where it was almost hard to get a word out of him. Not that he looked like he didn't care, but either he was camera shy or didn't know how to express himself or felt the usual teenage shame at doing stuff with his parents :P It's good to see his personality come out and see him engage both with you and what with you're both doing in such a way.

    @SMARTEREVERYDAY 12:30. A free bit of sage advice. NEVER, ever ever ever ever... Shoot a powder weapon with the lid off your powder canister. Don't even have it out when you are firing. Imagine a spark landed in that thing. Also when you shoot a black powder percussion weapon if it doesn't fire give it a good 20 seconds incase of a slow burn. Please be careful. This brings back a harrowing memory. I was 17 when I bought a used .36 Hawes cap and ball revolver. I had to drive 35 miles to find a store selling caps and powder. On the way home I couldn't resist so I turned off the highway and drove up a gravel road about 1/8th of a mile. Nice field, no fences, and no houses. Perfect spot. I did not have a nipple cleaner so I charged forward despite knowing the nipples were fouled. I loaded the powder, pushed in the balls until I had the cylinder loaded. I put the caps on and proceeded to fire off three of the charges with no problem. Then I had a cap go off without igniting the powder. Oops. What now? I had enough sense not to move the hang fire away from the barrel. I waited several minutes and decided to leave. I laid the revolver on the bench seat of my car and drove back to the highway, turned left and I got about 1/8th of a mile when that hang fire finally cooked off. Naturally the windows were up. That was really loud. Important point: My gun was pointed about 45 degrees away from my right thigh. When it went off the gun grip came up about three inches and turned to90 degrees away from my leg. Then the ball came out. The ball traveled through the foam in my '74 Dodge Dart and exited the side of the seat just above the rocker panel. The bullet hit the door where the bottom of the door was folded up to catch the door panel screws. The ball was stuck in the door panel. Deformed.
    The point is #1: Hang fires can take much longer to ignite that a minute. I estimate mine smoldered for five full minutes before it went off. #2: It amazed me that my gun moved so much BEFORE the ball got out of the 7.5 " barrel. DO NOT lay a "Primer Only Went Off" gun down. When an unheld gun goes off, the bullet isn't going to the same place it happened to be pointed.
    #3: Buy and use the nipple cleaner before ever putting a primer on.

Basically three revolvers welded together and all firing on one trigger. Sounds silly but I fully believe the mechanics would work in real life, albeit wildly impractical. Obviously it would be more practical to fire one barrel at a time so you basically have an 18 round revolver.

    A note on your powder. Black powder substitutes like Pyrodex are harder to ignite than plain old black powder. While it works fine in modern inline muzzle loading guns using modern primers, it can cause slow ignition or even failure of ignition in traditional muzzleloaders.

    A few things. Before you load up it is a good idea to put a cap on the nipple and fire just the cap. If you point it at a leaf or something light the gases from the cap will move the object and then you will know the breech is clear of obstructions and when you load it with powder and ball the shot will go off. The single barrel obviously has 1 channel from cap to powder. The 2 barrel has 2 channels from cap to powder and each must be cleared separately. The 3 barrel has 3 separate channels, one to each barrel and will be difficult to clear because if 1 channel is clear the gases will just use that channel to escape and leave obstructions in the others. The obstructions are usually oil which has oxidized and turned to a waxy substance. It can be quite difficult to clear particularly if there is any rust involved. And the powder is corrosive when fired, it forms a salt that must be cleaned with water based products. Clean until it is way cleaner than you think is adequate and then clean it a little more. Then oil it quickly so the metal doesn't flash rust.
    The first 2 pistols are actual antiques from the 1800's. The "Duckfoot" is a reproduction. I hope you didn't pay the price on the tag for that one, they were mass produced and not worth that much.

  • @phant0
    @phant0 หลายเดือนก่อน +667

    Just a quick word of safety: If the primer went off and the main powder charge didn't, keep it pointed downrange for one minute as there is a chance it might be a hang-fire, where the ignition of the powder charge is delayed.

    Seeing you and your son firing those antique pistols in slow motion was awesome, but what really impressed me was your son. He was an extremely responsible, respectful, and funny young man. Obviously, Destin and his wife have done an incredible job raising him. I was raised and have lived most of my life in NYC. I think there are a lot of people in blue states who would be horrified by the idea of a minor firing antique black powder pistols. I think this video could help them understand how many people are raised in the South. I have never owned a gun. My firearms experience consists of firing 5 rounds with a .22 rifle at Scout camp 40 years ago. However, I believe teaching kids to be responsible with and around firearms is probably better than teaching them to fear them. Not that my beliefs matter much, given that I don't have any kids.

    What a fun video. Love seeing your son with you after following you since the beginning. Also, due to the fact that your utilizing loose black powder, even when loading I'd recommend ALWAYS holding those weapons in a safe direction. There was times when loading that it was pointed unsafely, and keeping caps on all containers and tins at all times is hiiiiighly recommended. Hangfires and smoldering is a huge risk. I'd load away from the table that has any powder and percussion cap tins etc. Black powder can easily go wrong. Just look at your timestamp 12:43 ! Much love and keep making amazing content!! =)

    My father taught me how to use his model 1861 Army Colt when I was in high school. I cast bullets and loaded and fired a cap and ball pistol under his guidance. What amazed me was how I could hear the bang, then a delay, then the 'clang' as the bullet hit the steel barrel down the driveway (we lived on a ranch in Northern California).

    My man, you drove all the way out for the real pistols but didn't get real black powder - and then you called it out as 10 grains of black powder instead of Pyrodex? Give it a shot, it's great! It's also a requirement for priming a flintlock if you ever get around to those (which I also recommend heartily)

    • @Ossuis
      @Ossuis 6 วันที่ผ่านมา

      I feel a bit crazy saying it, but flintlocks always feel way more reliable to me as long as you have a quality piece. Percussions caps are sometimes hard to fiddle with as well, sometimes misfire for no discernable reason and take multiple caps, and lastly, they make me nervous of a sudden impact or bump setting off the cap while the flint has no such risk.
      Obviously, percussions are better in many ways, especially in harsher weather and other utility, but on the range I prefer my rock crushers.

    It's generally not recommended to fire antiques. The primary risk is that there's just enough metal fatigue to cause a critical fail of either the barrel or the firing chamber at the base of the barrel. As for clearing a black powder pistol, If a second or third procession cap doesn't cause it to fire it should be set down so it's pointing away from everyone and just let it sit. Trying to get water into it is not likely to work. Caution about nipples. Never over tighten. If you over tighten your nipples you'll never get them off.

    I paused here 14:51 to say I’m a math, science and engineering teacher. I love the applied geometry problem of hitting three targets as a geometry teacher, but I think engineer Destin would reach the same conclusion as I have about multiple factors and set up a dummy paper target to measure the actual dispersal at the desired distance. As a physics and chemistry guy I wonder if all three bullets will leave their barrels in close enough synchronization to allow for the consistent aiming of all three shots.
    LET’S SEE!
    Nope. The paper target would have made a huge difference because the factor of twisting during deflagration would have shown up. I didn’t mention that I’m an Army vet and a hunter, so I’ll add this, shooting in general is a little bit of art, a bit more science but mostly skill.
