I have ridden the coaster many times between oceanside and SD Mike! This was a nice treat from you to film all this great stuff down towards SD! Another great video man woohoo lol! :)
Nice video! I love Coaster a lot especially old Coaster. It’s really changed a lot in the last 5 years the equipment, the infrastructure, and the paint scheme. I’ll miss the F59PHIs when they are gone they are my favorites
Train rides are always fun to do, no matter where you are, mainline or tourist railroad. Fantastic video! Also, 36:58 hey, no hiding! I can see you! Also how was the ride as a whole?
Hi Mike, an interesting video for me because I get to see the interior of the railroad car. This ride also gives me a very nice view of the countryside on this railway line. Very interesting trains and locomotives used here. Thank you for showing me.
Amazing video! Glad to see you back on the surfline w/ 3001! If your still down south, a coaster deadhead will likely leave tomorrow going NB to CMF Taylor.
Nice video Mike! As much as I remembered being obsessed with SoCal railroading back then, I do at least miss when we did have some more variety on the Coaster and Surfliner even with how the horns sounded from the 2000’s to 2013 or 2014, like I think 2304 sounded actually lovely now that I remember it, although 2307 was another one. Something I do at least miss is the way 6952 sounded from 2010-2016. Much better days!
I'm pretty sure 6908 ended getting 6952's horn around 2016, that horn sounded quite unique and I belive 6908 still has it to this day, although it became fouled sometime last year and now sounds the same as 6904
Yes, more Train Ride videos please: how about some rides on the Cascades, Sounders, and Amtrak up in your neck of the woods. In particular, I would like a "Ride" from Seattle to Vancouver, Canada.
That was a very fun train ride from Oceanside to San Diego on the coaster when will be your next train ride from San Jose to San Francisco on the Caltrain?
Come to think of it, I saw that cab car sometime between 2020 - 22, I didn't think it was the last with the mechanical bell! I enjoyed seeing the hammer swing and strike the bell, but I assumed there was at least more than one cab car still in service with the traditional bell, so I didn't take any pics/video of it ringing. Now I'm unsure if I'll ever be lucky enough to see it again, as I'm usually catching the Surfliner instead...
NCTD ended up replacing all of the bells on the old cab cars within a span of less than 4 months last year. When I visited in February of 2022, only the two overhauled cars had them (2309, 2310). Mid way through my trip in April of 2022, 2302 was the last one and just a day or two after I got to ride, they pulled the car from service and replaced the bell. That's why the scene at 14:32 in the video is the same train set with the exception of the cab car (2303). That was filmed a day or two after the 2302 was taken off.
Oceanside station Opened in Fall 1983. Some of the others opened in 1995 and Solana Beach in 2001 when the platform was lowered below the surface 45 feet. The Santa Fe Depot in San Diego opened in 1815. .
I moved to California in 2010 as a young kid, and I loved hearing the F59PHI horns from my house. Surfline has changed a lot since 2010, it has definitely progressed. Although it is up for debate whether that 'progress' will be for the better.
Yes, a lot has changed over the last decade and a half. It's neat to see service improvements, but I do miss the old trains. I will soon be posting a video on the entire Surf Line that will include a look at all sorts of changes to the line and equipment over the last several years.
If you're able to do train ride videos from other parts of the country, I would love to see the NJT Atlantic City line! It's a personal favorite of mine because it runs close to where I live and I get to see it on my drive to work everyday
I will be doing a Train Talk on the Charger at some point, but possibly not until the first ALC42E is completed. Although, I could split them into separate episodes.
That would be cool and I thought that would be a good idea at one point. It doesn't sound like that will be happening unfortunately, but I'm glad two of the F40s were saved!
Great video! A couple thoughts, how come trains blow their horn all the time in Oceanside and Carlsbad but once get to Encinitas and Del Mar, most crossings have a “no horn” rule? I always appreciate when the driver blows the horn in Cardiff. It’s like, GTFO of my way hahahah. Also, the NCTD app Pronto is literally the worst app of all time. And lastly, I wish they’d wash the windows
Thanks! Oceanside is now officially a quiet zone between Surfrider Way and Cassidy Street. Carlsbad is opting to go with a trench and crossing elimination rather than a quiet zone. Del Mar has had a device called a "Wayside Horn" for nearly 10 years. It's basically just a speaker on a pole that plays a "horn" sound in the same pattern as a train normally would. Since the sound is directed, it is in theory supposed to reduce noise pollution. They are also much less difficult to install, both in the amount of construction and application process. As for Encinitas, I'm not sure. Encinitas is not currently a quiet zone, so they should be blowing the horns through all the crossings with the exception of Chesterfield Drive in Cardiff, which became a quiet zone in 2019. And yes, definitely wish they'd wash the windows hahaha.
Was fortunate enough to see 3001 in May that same year. Definitely something not happening again. The only possible view I can get of it and 3002 unit is along I-5 at the Stuart Mesa shops, if I ever do.
It would be neat. I think the concept works well in certain areas, particularly that Virginia to Florida section. If they could find a similar corridor to run a train like that, it could work well too.
@@lowellvillerailfanproductions So, something similar to the route of the Coast Starlight. With the amount I drive between Washington and Southern California, I would definitely use that!
