This is why the Warriors movie resonated with me when I was coming up. I remember back in 92 we had an all city meet up at Schurz Highschool. I sea of Black and gold war sweaters was an incredible sight.

The reason the sweaters mean so much to most of these guys is we lost a lot of friends because of our gang culture. I was a l/a Gaylord and we lost at least 20 guys in 6 years. So those sweaters remind us of our fallen. Now cops won't understand, some cops were Gaylords so they understood. We kept our neighborhood safe. No car jackings, no robberies,we weren't allowed to even mention drugs. Our job was to keep our hood safe from any outside b.s.

James “Jinx” O’Connor’s book is worth a read for sure… but he gets a lot wrong.
Just for example, he stated the Insane UnKnowns started in the 1970s and were given less “rank” by the Latin Kings than the Latin Pachucos. It’s such an absurd thing to write, that you can tell he clearly got that info from a very biased source. First, Insane UnKnowns actually stated in the 1960s (likely in 1964). Second the Latin Kings are a major force for sure but they don’t assign “rank” like that. Also, the Latin Pachucos were definitely down in the 1980s (the period Jinx was talking about) but the Insane UnKnowns were also down. In fact the city and news consistently called both the Insane UnKnowns and the Spanish Cobras the two most víolent and dangerøus gangs in the city at that time (late 1970s throughout much of the 1980s).
Now, his Latin Pachucos history is off too, as touched on already. They didn’t start in the 1970s and actually started in the 1980s. The style of their clothing had zero to do with their name, Jinx knows very little about KTown, where the LPs started. In KTown terms were used you didn’t really hear in other areas. Terms like “vultures”, that’s just what they called the much older established guys in the hood that were hungry for anything and everything. So they also called the young, mostly Mexican neutrons, “pachucos”. Those young guys were targeted by rivals because they were mistaken for being IUKs even though they weren’t bangers. So, they kept the name Pachucos and made it official, they were now the Latin Pachucos and started banging. Yes, disputes happened shortly after with IUKs but once the LPs stopped trying to expand in KTown and focused on Hanson everything went back to normal and IUKs and LPs got along again.
Now, if anyone wants a much more accurate read, you should read Zach Jones’ gang site. He has a much more objective writing style and gets a lot more right than Jinx does.
RIP Danny bka Lil Kent aka Kaos! (That was his sweater Jinx showed and mentioned him as someone he also knew and was friends with).

Chicago gang history looks shut down with 401 errors. Is that the site you talking about?

@@happy_2b_nappyChicago Hoodz is/was Jinx’s site. He had some great pics but again he gets a lot wrong (some things right but many things wrong too). Keep in mind, Jinx was never about the life and all of his info comes from other people.

@@notrustingany1Yes, that’s the site Zach runs, overall it’s a much more accurate and less biased source than Jinx. It is still up and running. Also, apologies bro, I didn’t see your message till now.
