thank you for sharing your experiences with this. We have a 5th wheel we need to replace the lighting in....... you have done all of the leg work for us ! WOW THANK YOU
After watching these two videos, I decided to try changing my bulbs. The reading lights were always hot in a few minutes and so we had toasted fingers. The outside light had melted the clear plastic clover in a small spot too. I went with Elite lights. The M4 company was very helpful. The bulbs came, fit easily and perfectly and the increased light is really great. Thanks for giving me the confidence...I am a much happy camper, although a few hundred $$ poorer.
So glad to hear you're happy with your LEDs! We love ours and we're looking forward to converting even more (fluorescent, docking, patio, etc). We'll have videos about them too, but we just need to make time off work to do it. :-|
I went on line and found th bulbs. Happy 18th anniversary and 11 years on the road. Perhaps a future video will enlighten your fans on how you keep happy and content. By the way, you deserve to be the most watched; you know what you're talking about. God bless.
When I got my travel trailer, the previous owner had already replaced almost all the lights with cool blue LEDs. I appreciate the lights' longevity and energy savings, but that color of light is seriously depressing to me. I find myself gravitating to the incandescent reading light over the couch and an incandescent night-light I plugged into a socket near my bed. Thanks for the color comparisons! I'll be switching to the warmer lights as soon as I can. :)
+Annalee Davidson We hate cool blue too! We found that "natural" for work areas and "warm" for cozy/entertaining spaces works great for us. Nice to have options. :)
The MH we just bought has almost all LED replacements. Only 3 halogens need to be replaced. And 1 halogen map light over the drivers seat. Nice thing to find. Saves me about $250. The bulbs he used are $10 each!
When I saw this video I knew I had found the bulbs I needed. I have the exact same reading/spot lights with the 10w bi-pin halogen in my Winnebago View and boy do they get hot!!! I'm used to seeing the cheap ones, but not knowing if they would fit I have been hesitant to order. Bought ten natural light and got a discount, and they applied your RVgeeks5 discount (yes, it still works!) and this will complete my LED conversion. Just noticed, 44,444 views.... Thanks for the video.
+CharlesinGA That's awesome Charles! We just met with Steve at M4 in California, and picked up yet another batch of LEDs, this time for our basement (forgot to do those). LOL He's a fellow RVer, and took us out to the Mojave Desert to share his other hobby with us.... Off-Highway Vehicles. We learned about a whole new use for LEDs - tricking out ATVs for night use. We'll have some upcoming videos about that. And Steve said he will continue to honor the 5% discount, too. Thanks for the 44,445th view! ;-)
Received from M4 the 10 ea LED replacements for the 10w halogen reading/spot lights (very promptly I might add). Installed them and they work great. Only non LED in the coach is the spot lamp on a flex wand (M16 bulb) and the light in the stove vent hood (921). Thanks for the videos.
Just ordered 2 elite series 4500k wedge bases. I like the more natural light. We'll see if they work how I want them to. If they are as great as they seem I will be replacing them all in phases.
Natural white is very nice. We also like the warmer tone of the warm white in some fixtures, like our sconces. Happy shopping, Melissa, and don't forget your discount! :)
Those are halogen puck lights, but of course we replaced the bulbs with LEDs. Sorry we don’t know exactly where they came from, as they came as original equipment on our motorhome 16 years ago. They are a very popular style though, so should be easy to find something like it through an RV parts store.
@@RVgeeks thank you so much for the quick reply!! Funny thing, I'm actually watching your videos for more future "contruction/additions" to our RV:-) Ya'll rock!!
Thanks Brian! Steve liked that effect too. We're lucky that these translucent sconces allow for showing the color really well. We've done a good percentage of all three types so far (incandescent, halogen and fluorescent), but we have more to go. We have some really beautiful fluorescent tubes that we got from M4 that we can't wait to show the install on. More expensive than the strip lights we did last year, but a super elegant bulb.
RVgeeks Just got on M4's website and ordered replacement bulbs for my vanity. I have replaced all except those, because I haven't found a good deal on them...until now. Thanks for the discount code.
Great info. and timely I've been planning on switching all of our lights to led's. I noticed your dining table/computer desk configuration and was wondering how it stows for travel?
The computer desk is part of the large desk/buffet unit that's built against the wall, and the table is attached to it with hinges, with a single folding leg at the far end. For travel, the leg folds up against the bottom of the table, then the table swings down to a vertical position and clips near the floor hold it against the base of the buffet. It's a great set-up, and was one of the factory options we ordered from Newmar.
LEDs do cost more, but the major benefit for RVers isn't so much the cost savings of longer life (since regular 12-volt bulbs do last quite well, it will indeed take a long time to re-coup the extra cost). Rather, the biggest benefit is the lower power usage and lower heat output, both of which are very beneficial, especially when boondocking (camping without hook-ups).
It should be noted that "warmer" (more yellow) tinted bulbs have a lower temperature than "cooler" (more blue) tinted bulbs. By temperature I do not mean the amount of actual heat that the bulb gives off but rather the tint of a white light on a Kelvin scale. A "warm" white bulb might be rated at 2700k where as a "cool" white bulb would be around 6000k. When in doubt as to how "warm" a bulb is, just check what kelvin the bulb is rated.
Thanks for adding that info, Arthur. You're right on. The only reason we didn't get into color temperatures here is because video was getting a little long already. But it's a great topic that we'll try to address in more detail in a future video.
I'd like a fixture that accomodated all three color temperatures at the same time (warm/soft white, natural white, cool white). In my experience, each LED on its own is too narrow of color-temperature spectrum and looks artificial. All three gives a fuller light spectrum.
hello again gents, so there is no re-wiring or changing of light housing units to switch over? Just buy the led lights? I've noticed, as you said, the other bulbs get really hot! maybe good in winter but not summer. PS, SOOOO CONGRATS on all your milestones!!! How blessed you both are! a blessing that is rooted in hard work :)
Incandescent and halogens are plug-in replacements. No re-wiring needed. Fluorescents do require some re-wiring and we'll be covering that thoroughly in a pair of upcoming videos later this summer. Stay tuned!
RVgeeks Perfect! I have no flourescents, don't think they were invented when my rv was born lol. Opinion request: how do you feel about bringing lamps into the coach? thanks!
Ernest Tykarski Halogens are dimmable, but super hot, so that's a key reason we're switching to LEDs (along with lower power consumption). Some LED lights are dimmable too, but require a special dimmer. M4 products sells them: m4products.com. Be sure to use the code "rvgeeks5" any time you buy from them for a 5% discount! The owner, Steve, is awesome, and can surely answer any questions you may have.
LED's are great if you will be camping without shore power as they help to conserve on battery power however there is no advantage to having LED's in an RV that will be hooked up to shore power most of the time. In some circumstances the electronic components in the LED bulbs can actually fail due to the power converter not putting out a constant or clean enough DC power output. Great for dry camping, no benefit for full timers with hook ups.
While we agree that the primary reason for investing in LEDs is to reduce drain on the house batteries when camping without shore power, we still like them for other reasons too. Another benefit is that they don't get hot like incandescents and especially halogens. When we're in hot climates, we appreciate the reduced heat output. We also like the reduction in power usage even when we're hooked up, since so many RV parks charge for metered electric during monthly stays. Lastly, we appreciate the extra brightness that the right LED choice can provide. While all LEDs do have electronics in them, those with high-quality capacitors are very resistant to being damaged by power fluctuations.
Randy Lahey Not sure where to recommend for inexpensive LEDs. M4 bulbs are more expensive than the real cheap type, but worth the extra if you're okay with splurging for higher quality.
Visit m4products.com and use Coupon Code RVGEEKS5 to get a 5% discount on the same great M4 LEDs we use in our own RV.
Thanks for the color comparison...
I love the blue

wow you guys really make this easy to understand Thank you so much for all you do to help us new to RVing
Thanks so much! Glad we can be of help.
Just ordered a bunch of LED's for my motor home from M4 Products . Thank you so much for the tips! I love this channel!
Thanks so much! Hope you love them as much as we do... and that you used the discount code! :)

Hey, what kinds of lights are those on your ceiling (3:35)? If we have the long tubes, are we able to switch out our lights to those rounds ones?

Very enlightening. Great idea adjusting the camera exposure to illuminate the differences. It made the video. How many total bulbs have you replaced?
Thanks Brian! Steve liked that effect too. We're lucky that these translucent sconces allow for showing the color really well. rvwithtito You should have waited to see if you won the contest!! Let us know how you like the lights when you get them. :)
I tend to use daylight bulbs - white/blue - gives more of a natural light but then again I was a photographer in my former life.
I have bergman stop tail lights #92 series and bergman doesn't have an led upgrade kit does m4 led have one?
Hi Matt. We don't know the answer to that one, but that's a perfect question for Steve at M4. You can e-mail him here: m4@m4sales.com.

Do LEDs cost more do they last long enough to make it worth it?

shelleyfunny19 As in table lamps? Our RV came with one, which we like. All a matter or personal taste. Just be sure to lay it down before driving. ;-)

Got a 1980s coachman 5th wheel with all original fixtures, can I replace with LEDs in the old sockets?
You sure can. LEDs are made as direct replacements for 12-volt plug-in incandescent and halogen lights.
RVgeeks where's the best place to buy them? EBay or Canadian tire or something ?
Randy Lahey Not sure where to recommend for inexpensive LEDs. M4 bulbs are more expensive than the real cheap type, but worth the extra if you're okay with splurging for higher quality.
RVgeeks could I even get LEDs for trailers at Canadian tire? I know they're the same as a car's lights like reverse lights and some head lights
Not sure if Canadian Tire carries LEDs, but it's worth a look. They have just about everything else!
