This 101-Year-Old Tattoo Artist Is the Last of Her Kind

- Whang-Od is the last remaining mambabatok-a tattoo artist in the Philippines using traditional hand-tap methods. At 101 years old, she is the last master of the thousand-year-old trade that first began as a way to honor warriors in battle. Using a hammer and thorns, Whang-Od taps coal ink into skin. Today, she is training her grandniece to carry on her legacy, keeping the family mamababatok tradition alive.
This Great Big Story was inspired by Genesis.

During her time, tattoos are actually normal and even considered as beautiful. Headhunters would get them after killing someone, which shows how much respect they have for the art form. Nowadays in the Philippines, tattoos translate to "an ex convict" or "an addict".
My Chinese-Filipino cousin went to a mall last time and she saw a man wearing a Chinese tattoo that reads “Happy Father’s Day”.

She seems so sweet, love her voice
It truly is a beautiful thing that she has taught another family member how to carry on the beautiful tradition.
wait so who or what did she kill in the old days? damnnnn granny is badass 🤣
Oh
It was men. Not woman.
Lmao back on old days I mean really old days like 400 or 500 years ago
Real talk 🤔🤫
it was her ancestors they usual defend their clans from the other people or clans .. if they caught u they'll cut your head off ..
She deserves to be our national artist
yes i agree and i can't believe i have not thought of that
Actually isa na siya sa mga national artist natin
You people must learn your History lessons. Lol she cannot be categorized to that. Tribal Artists like her has their own counterpart of National Artists, and they are called GAMABA. She's one of the few GAMABAs coz there are only 16 in the country whereas there are hundreds of National Artists. GAMABA is more prestigious.
_Aggree👌🇵🇭✨_
Nope. She's a mere Tat practitioner.A bearer of ancient tribal tradition.Tat already existed before she was born. She was conferred with prestigious Haraya Award at Tabuk by NCCA anyways.
Thank you ! For featuring one of our best culture and the last person who can do it ! We maybe a small country but we're big in culture ! Wish you can feature more of our culture!
