  • Harvey Brownstone conducts an in-depth Interview with Patrick Cassidy, Broadway, Movie & TV Star, Son of Shirley Jones & Jack Cassidy
    About Harvey's guest:
Today’s guest, Patrick Cassidy, is a popular actor and singer who’s been dazzling the world of stage and screen with his remarkable talent, charisma and versatility for over 4 decades.
And his talent comes as no surprise, given that he is a member of Hollywood royalty. He’s the son of the beloved and legendary entertainers Jack Cassidy and Shirley Jones.
His body of work in musical theatre is incredibly impressive. On Broadway, he starred in “The Pirates of Penzance”, “Annie Get Your Gun”, “Aida”, “42nd Street” and “Leader of the Pack”, which earned him a Tony Award nomination for Best Actor. He’s also starred in national tours of some of those shows I just mentioned, and in fact he won the National Broadway Theatre Award for Best Actor in a Touring Musical for his performance in “Aida”, before playing the role on Broadway.
He originated the role of “The Balladeer” in the Off-Broadway production of Stephen Sondheim's “Assassins”. And he has starred in numerous other theatrical productions including “The Sound of Music”, “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat”, “The Robber Bridegroom”, “Company”, and “The Threepenny Opera”, for which he was nominated for the Garland Award for Best Actor. On the big screen, he’s appeared in “Off the Wall”, “Nickel Mountain”, “Fever Pitch”, “Love at Stake”, “Man of Her Dreams”, “A One Time Thing”, and of course, the brilliant, groundbreaking Oscar-nominated movie, “Longtime Companion”. On television, you’ve seen him in many movies, TV series and miniseries including: “Midnight Offerings”, “Angel Dusted”, “Dress Gray”, “Dirty Dancing”, “Napoleon & Josephine”, “Hitler’s Daughter”, “Ruby & The Rockits” and many more.
Our guest is also the artistic director of the renowned Studio Tenn Theatre Company in Franklin, Tennessee.

What an absolutely marvelous interview on both your parts. I really only knew Patrick from "Love at Stake", one of my favorite movies, and from his appearances on "Murder She Wrote." Eventually, I started listening to his fine show "Studio Tenn Talks" and was able to comment in the chat room and correspond with him on Facebook. I did get to meet him and Melissa in 2022 at a Sondheim cabaret show, and he was so incredibly kind and gracious. Thank you, Patrick Cassidy, for the inspiration you've provided the world with your work, talent, and dedication. You have truly made a difference in this world, and yes, I'd love to see you as Billy Flynn on the opening night of "Chicago on Broadway.

I was a big Sean Cassidy fan, I mean, I didn’t have Sean Cassidy posters on my wall, but I love that song, the Da doo Ron Ron Da doo Ron Ron. I actually had Bobby Sherman on my wall, and Leif Garrett just so you know ha ha ha, but yeah, thank you so much for this interview, Harvey

I can't stop smiling, what a wonderful interview, it was great learning about everything he's done!
You interviewed his brother Ryan, didn't you, I enjoyed that one as well!!
You brought up the TV movie Christmas Eve, I watch it many times at Christmas & also throughout the year.
I watched it the night it premiered, oh the tears... If I could ask Patrick a question, it would be, when the movie first aired, was the title of it called The Christmas Dove? That's what I remember in my stubborn brain. I hadn't seen it for a few years then it has a new title. I video taped it & played it so much I wore it out! Now I watch it on TH-cam, Miss Young made it available for her fans who loved her & Christmas. ❤️
Sorry Harvey, looks like I got caught up in a memory again.

Another fantastic interview with an actor who has done some great work, Harvey. I first saw Patrick Cassidy in ‘Something in Common’ where he was blessed with playing the great Ellen Burstyn’s son and the beautiful Tuesday Weld’s young boyfriend. I was already jealous of him getting to play Tuesday’s younger boyfriend and was really jealous when he got to play the still beautiful Jacqueline Bisset’s younger lover in ‘Napoleon and Josephine’ a year later. Then I had a chance to watch one of his early films, ‘Just the Way You Are’ with Kristy McNichol on VHS. But when I got to see him in ‘Longtime Companion,’ I got over my jealousy of him and simply cried over his, and the entire cast’s, performance. He demonstrated clearly that he was a lot more than a good looking guy who got to live out a high school kid’s midnight fantasy of getting to play the younger lover of two great looking, older actresses. I only wish I had been as lucky as you to catch some of his musical theatre work!
Now that you’ve been able to interview Bruce Davison and Patrick Cassidy, you definitely got to land their co-star, Campbell Scott!
Oh, and by the way, the movie where Bette Davis wears an eyepatch was the horror-comedy ‘The Anniversary’ (1968), a Hammer Horror film where she played Mrs. Targgard “the most merciless mother of them all,” according to the tagline. I have it on DVD and it’s one where she’s completely chewing the scenery and obviously enjoying every moment of it!

The fact that he was able to forego alcohol and drugs, and was quite health conscious in his youth, evidently paid off well! He is 62 years of age! In fact, he appears to be one of those guys who gets better with age, like wine and cheese.

The Cassidy kids inherited their talent from their father. The great Jack Cassidy. Amazing talent Jack Cassidy was a closeted gay man who had affairs with Cole porter and countless male friends and hustlers. He led an incredibly sad and conflicted life who in the last days of his life believed he was Jesus Christ and suffered numerous nervous breakdowns He died in a horrible spectacular house fire caused by alcohol and a dropped cigarette. He burned to death on a negahyde couch Sadly the family could only identify him through his Irish singlet ring. One hopes he found peace in death that he never found in life. He was an incredible and amazing stage actor. He was the best villain and guest star in Colombo. Amazing talent who was a conflicted and difficult father husband and friend. Jack Cassidy will never be forgotten. His true love outside his wife Shirley was his close friend Sal mineo who died 10 months before Jack. He and Sal were very close friends and Jack never truly recovered from sals mysterious and sudden murder and stabbing outside his home. Jack continued to try to help find Sal’s murderer until the day he died at his home burned alive by his fallen cigarette and alcohol induced death by misadventure.

He was a very good athlete he was really good in both sports. We were very competitive with each other. Pat was a star quarterback at Beverly Hills high school unfortunately he broke his shoulder and that ended his career. But he went into acting and never looked back. Jack seemed to not get his due respect does he?......just David/Saun's dad who died in a house fire is most of what I remember. Shirley did a great job being a wonderful role model to her sons and stepson. I saw your interviews with now three of her sons.
