You know Yaron has a point here. An example he could use is Disney World. I worked in Food & Beverage at Disney world and the company has its own food and sanitation inspection agency who are far more strict for food safety than any government inspectors we ever came across. When I worked at Disney not once did we ever hear of customers getting sick from our food beyond an occasional wrong order. I can personally testify to what Yaron is saying. Disney had its self-interest in mind when it created its own standards for food safety, stricter than the government's, and as a result Disney restaurants in Orlando are the cleanest across Florida.

It is easier to bribe an official than earn a reputation. No one risks his reputation earned over the years, but a fly-by-nighter has nothing to lose with bribery.

what about an industry where the negative impact of the product is more gradual and not known like the tabacoo and fossil fuel industry

I read an article once that talked about how McDonald's standard of meat quality is so high that meat that doesn't meet their standards is sold off to other companies. The point being their rejected meat still exceeds FDA standards.

Well said! Meat manufacturers have more of an incentive (they want to make money) to give good meat than someone from the FDA (they do it for the warm fuzzies). People who want to maximize profits will have 100% vigilance to avoid bad meat. The FDA has no incentive for 100% vigilance.

This is such common sense, but people can't seem to understand these simple concepts.

    It's mudraking, not mudrucking
