Joni is priceless, precious, wonderful ❤️ and loved by soo many people. I hope she knows this. This brilliant song is simply one example of her great consciousness!
I’m Italian and I remember this performance on TV…what a great version of Lakota! A superb Joni! Great thrills! Thank you Joni ..and of course Larry...what memories!
She really is a beacon of light in a dim and dark world of mundane and pretend artists. That voice and those lyrics tell a story that’s hard to hear but should be heard . How the hell does she find such melody from these odd chords and fractured rhythms? Shine on Joni
This is from her underrated & great album "Chalk Mark on a Rain Storm". A different version but brilliant as her guitar playing too. Joni is a goddess.
Yes I heard this as well...the guitar riff does sound like Everything For Nothing, which was probably not even written yet aside from the riff. Always interesting to see how her ideas take shape, which is why I especially love the fact that she performed an early version of Passion Play during this same live set as well...without any lyrical ideas that would carry over to the final version, it's interesting that the music and melody were both fully formed and barely altered three years later on the album version of the song. Glad you enjoyed it!
It's very much the same chord structure, which she invented so I'm cool with that. Her original Warner Reprise labelmate Jimi Hendrix did the same thing on some of his songs. The studio version of this is very keyboard and electronic drum layered and almost completely different other than the singing melody and the lyrics.
@@sonicboy19 Always hear snippets of future songs in riffs. Probably something that inspires them or something that they are working on,not yet developed. Those things sneak in there.
insane. the subject. the song. the artist. she will always remain my greatest inspiration. in life. in art. in truth.
...kennelled in metered boxes, dead dogs in debt to you... Shakespearean!
The lyrics are so much more profound in this blurry version... Joni prophecy!
I love to listen to this version, the distorsion of the vhs gives mystery and beauty

The Goddess of Heart... what a voice... what a soul... I Love You Joni
I've always loved hearing Joni since the 1960s. She is truly an artist who is a gift from God.
This is a great example of how she uses a 'mode' and runs her melody around it. She vocalizes this tune like a meditation on the theme. Just amazing.
What a great singer and songwritter !!! What a beauty !!! Thank you so much Joni…

Wow, I had never heard her sing this before. This is really intense!

Brilliant bass ..right in touch with Joni ..like her lover ..
Was her husband
Larry Klein bass player is her husband (then) he’s not anymore.
The bas guitar accents her voice perfectly.

I prefer this version to the one on 'Chalk Mark'
Genius
Social conscience, connected to the earth, and to the spirit of women,. There’s nothing Joni can’t do.

Is it just me, or did it sound like "Everything For Nothing" at the beginning? Anywho, so glad to see a video of her doing this song live.

I heard the same thing. sounds like the same tuning and similar chord structure.

Brilliant. theres a song where the lyrics include ' … ripping off Indian land again ...' .

Was the line about buffalo bones an ad lib? I'm not familiar enough with the lyrics to know if they were on the album. Thanks again.
There's an easy way to find out...
There are some lyrical changes in the final version. Like there is no "I am Lakota Brave, Lakota Meek...." etc etc.
