Will Thailand's military respect election results this time? | DW News

  • The stage is set for Thailand to hold a general election in May, after the dissolution of Parliament by government decree. Current prime minister Prayuth Chan-ocha launched the move, seeking to extend his time in office. The election pits him and the military-backed establishment against an opposition bloc helmed by billionaire populist and two-time former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra. His daughter, Paetongtarn Shinawatra, is the leading candidate for prime minister. Parties led and backed by Thaksin have won the most seats in every election since 2001, but have been toppled from power by military coups and court rulings.
DW spoke to political scientist Thitinan Pongsudhirak about what's at stake.

Thailand is one amazing country. I seriously hope that democracy prevails there.
The people are remarkably progressive and humble. The king (especially the current one) is a leech on the nation and needs to have his power restricted.
I'm wishing the nation and people of Thailand a most positive outcome from this election now and in the long term.

I live and work in Thailand and being a "de facto autocracy," I have doubts on the smooth conduct of the elections, without frauds, especially in the most remote areas of the Kingdom. After more that eight years in power, and despite a very favorable ( for the military) amendments to the constitution that will allow them to retain, no matter what, 250 seats of the upper house Senate, entirely appointed by the ruling junta, it is improbable they loose their grip on power. To form a new government the military need only to win 126 seats in the lower house having already secured the 250 of the senate ( 250 + 126 ) = 376 seats. That is why it is highly unlikely they will loose the "elections".

Unlike Myanmar's Tatmadaw, the Thai military still has some sense of shame and knows when to quit. That's how previous military govts in Thailand give up power and held elections. Sometimes they were shamed into it after protesters gets killed in clashes with soldiers, at other times they just sense they've ran out of steam and/or the generals began factional in-fighting amongst themselves for leadership, like Gen. Prayut and Gen. Prawit are now standing as separate parties in the upcoming elections. With the generals split, it's harder for one to rig the voting and results.
