in our BMW X3 we have a shifter that's very similar to that one in the Grand Cherokee, but it is much safer then the one from Jeep. If you leave the car in Drive, Reverse or Neutral and you open the door, it automatically shifts into park.
@@jokarpinski22 that's not even a part. It's pure software. The car already knows when the door is open. You just need to give that info to the gear shifter.
Manufacturers have to take responsibility for shifters and parking brakes that are shit on a stick. I drive rental cars quite often and I'm amazed by how many stupid design decisions go into gear shifters and parking brakes, and their combination, across a range of manufacturers.
the only rental cars I have driven all had regular 5 or 6 speed gearboxes and a conventional handbrake. The only thing you have to look out for is where reverse is. no wait, I had one with an electronic parking brake . . . did it's job but it's not as satisfying as a good old hand brake with it's reassuring sound as you pull it.
I wish I'd get cars with regular parking brakes these days (hand or foot brake I don't care) but 4 out of 5 times I get some BS electronic parking brake that takes it's sweet time to lock and works differently depending if you want to go forward or reverse afterwards. And they often "upgrade" me to automatic gearbox even though I specifically ask for manual every time. Meh.
namefinder who are "they". Company car? lease? Luckily all our company cars have regular manual gear boxes and hand brakes. (Mazda 3's and 6's) Some things don't need to change if they work in the first place.
I have this shifter in my vehicle and the absolute best way you can use this shifter with minimal error is by utilizing it slowly, by moving the shifter slowly, you can actually feel how many times the shifter clicks and also look at the dash or top of the shifter to verify your in the correct gear, long story short, slow operation is the best bet
Guys, this is such bad quality. Please hold yourselves to a higher standard of video-making. Jalopnik is a respected car news outlet, if a little quirky.
Do people realize BMW/Audi had this type of shifter for several years now? No one bitched about it in those cars, it's sad that a shifter is being blamed for peoples stupidity. Sorry about what happened to a great actor though.
Exactly. But thats the problem with alot of Americans these days. Something bad happens that is actually the fault of the person, find something else to blame it on. There are alot of Americans that have lost sight of personal responsibility. California and states like it, with their nanny state laws are partially to blame.
There appear to be a lot more fail safes in the BMW/Audi/Merdedes systems, with the car automatically going into park whenever it assumes the person is getting out (even if the car isn't shut off). In the case of Anton Yelchin, his likely routine is to pull into the driveway, park the car, get out, get the mail, return to the car, and then put the car in the garage. What happened during the "park" step is that he put it into neutral instead, got out (assuming it was parked), and due to the fact that he has habitually done this 100s of times, didn't actually check to see it was parked and ignored the chimes because they sound exactly the same as the "seatbelt not on" or "engine still running" chime. If he were in a BMW or Audi, the car would have automatically parked itself as soon as he opened the door and he would still be alive today. I would venture to guess that a lot of people have these same habits, meaning you go on autopilot and make lots of assumptions. It's not a good or bad thing to have these habits, but the designers of systems like these need to take into account more scenarios for the purpose of safety. I would prefer that car manufacturers err on the side of safety.
finally a video with someone who has some common sense. it's not a shifter problem it's a people not paying attention enough attention problem. I've moved and parked thousands of these vehicles and not once have I had one roll back on me.....EVER
***** engineering today is more of trying to compensate for people's stupidity which gets in the way of actually engineering a better product. Look at all the safety laws that dictate how car and a lot of other products are manufactured.
you must be one of the hundreds of idiots out there that screwed this up, for as many replies I have read from you. Are you also guilty of not getting it into park? Jesus fucking christ.
I'm sorry if I hurt any feelings but I've worked valet for over a year now at a hospital that takes in 300 plus cars through the main entrance alone every day. I see these in Jeep and Chrysler cars, with BMW and Maserati being some of the manufactures doing a similar design. My point is, its not new and a lot of cars have this now. If you take the time to look at either the instrument cluster or gear shifter to properly see its in park you will never make that error. Really, the best design is with Fords button gear select. Its fool proof. This is not the companies fault for someone being in a rush and just hoping its in park and leaving. Yes its not the best design but again its not faulty. You just have to slow down a bit and take your time, which some people have a problem with. I've seen people leave a regular shifting car in neutral with no parking brake. Thankfully the driveway up to the hospital is flat. Some people get out their car leaving it in drive. Thankfully I have a sense to catch them because if I didn't care I'd let them role. Its your vehicle, take charge to learn its ins and outs. Switch on a parking break also if your that unsure.
There are some things regarding the car's features and design that should never be left to manufacturer's choice. Too much creative freedom where safety comes second.
This is why it's good to always use the hand brake, even when it feels unnecessary and stupid. Automatic parking brakes are great for people who don't bother learning how their car works. Autonomous driving will be even better.
just remembered anton yelchin, found this video. i don't know if this is/was a common design choice, but I cannot understand who thought making the shifter behave like an arcade joystick was a good idea. like holy shit i never understood how someone could run themselves over with their own car when I first heard the news, but this makes total sense.
Same. Watching first Star Trek movie as I type. Really dumb design. Too easy to make a mistake. All this technology just for bells and whistle gimmicks and nothing to prevent user error and save lives.
This is exactly how I thought it worked. It would help to have a louder chime, though. I have a different brand of car with joystick style selector and have accidentally misused it once or twice. The screen displays a flashing yellow caution triangle, dire text (makes me scared I just f'd up the transmission) and very loud distinct alert chime.
They should try a upgrade called Manual gearbox, all the gears are in different positions so you never get them wrong, also it has special feature for engaging the gears called Clutch it is pretty neat when you got it understood, just think what ya doing and go ahead ;).
I just don't understand what the benefit is of having the shifter return to the center position no matter what gear its in. The track for the shifter still has to be long enough for the full travel and is apparently confusing for some people. Makes no sense to me.
My girlfriends 3 series is similar, in that the shifter is always in the same place. On more than a few occasions she forgot to put the car in park. If you're sitting with the car in drive and your seatbelt off, when you open the door it automatically goes into park. Seems like a simple fix.
The problem is that Opening the drivers door should automatically put the transmission into park. (For a car wash you would then need to manually place the car into Neutral with the door open.) Also to properly get into Park you must push the shifter forward and hold it there momentarily for the electrical switching into Park to happen. The change in gear should be instant upon pushing the shift selector forward. Problem solved.
Anything but park will not allow ignition to be cut. I do alignments and it's super annoying to have to leave these running to keep them in neutral. That being said as sad as it is it was the driver error and not the car design that led to his death...you have to ignore a lot to get out of that thing without it being in park. And if you're parking on an incline where a vehicle can roll the parking brake should be set as well.
Solution: if you are too absent-minded to feel for three clicks, look for the indicator on both the shifter AND dash to say you're in park, fail to use the parking brake, or notice the bell noise when you open the door, then you probably shouldn't be driving.
I don't think it is Jeeps fault. People get too much in a hurry and don't even think. They just wanna go go go. I don't think it would be that hard to look down, put it in park and get out. an extra 5 seconds to get out will be a lot better than messing up your car.
This would have been solved if the position stayed in a "Park" position permanently like every car before it, but "FUTURE TECH" has to make shit like this...
This and those stupid "dial" type shifter controls I do not like. It looks like most new cars have them however. I do not like how the driver is slowly being disconnected from the vehicle. Eventually just becoming a passenger with the upcoming autonomous cars.
What happens is people push the lever forward without pushing the button. It won't go into park with the button not being pressed. But it will shift out of drive.
That is very confusing and complicated. I have a manual shift car and it's very easy to leave it in neutral when you park and get out of it. I did that once and it rolled down the driveway. I tried to stop it and my hand got caught and pinned in the door almost killing me.
Okay, I do see a little bit of a flaw with the design of the shifter, but where I think the real problem lies is the warning beep. My car will wake up the neighbors if you open the door and leave the headlights on! I would expect the same kind of beeping if you accidentally leave a 5,000 pound car in gear!!!
Driver error. However, I dont like everything depending on the light telling you where youre at. Whether my manual transmission or automatic, I can tell where im at based on where the shifter is. This one springs back to center, so you never really know.
I have this same spring shifter on my 2014 JGC.. It's a very short throw..and I really like how fast it shifts! It's one of the features that sold me on the car!
you dont count how many notches you shift...lol wtf? Once you've had the vehicle for more than an hour it's really easy to get used to..and fast ! you quickly slam it all the way up for park.... slam all the way down for drive. It's the easiest and smoothest shifter I've ever had! How hard can it be?
i can shift a 93 jeep cherokee trany shifter just as fast and its not gonna roll any where .this is crap and people that think its cool should be SHAMED .
@@JohnSmith-mg5ve I highly doubt it. Until you try this style of shifter... you really don't know or understand. It is very cool and no I'm not ashamed whether you want me to be or not.
While I appreciate the necessity to always know what my car is doing, how much thrust is being applied, etc.- I drove a stick for 10 years and loved that car- but CVT is just a relaxing breath of fresh air. Unless it's a sports car, no thanks.
I own a 2015 GC and Im so surprise that people are having trouble and running over someone. I prefer this shifter than the new ones 17 models. Dont know how people leave the gear to neutral and just go but it should indicate on screen that your gear is in neutral.
So to get into park, you actually have to put it into park? Wow! I'm more puzzled about why the reverse is in the front and the drive in the back. That is confusing.
This heap of junk accelerates so fast you can't shift 'up' with puny human arms, only 'down'. Well, in F1 that's why you shift down pushing forward and up backwards. In this junk heap......Poor design.
At no time did you mention the park brake (hand brake in the UK). Do your vehicles still have them or are they redundant now? In the UK you are trained to set the hand brake BEFORE you select Park.
If someone is that simple that they need a video to tell them how to put their vehicle in Park, they really should have their licence revoked. It's really not that difficult. I always put my foot brake on too out of habit as I live in a very hilly area.
I'm all for advancing technology and making new and easier ways to do things, but I don't really see the point of redesigning the shifter. It might save a little space, but it adds complexity and requires the average buyer to "retrain" how they've driven cars for years. Not everyone is a car enthusiast and cares about all the minute details and just want a car that works and behaves like the one they had before. My only real complain about the way this particular shifter is designed is that there doesn't seem to be as much physical feel between going from D to P or D to R or D to N if you're trying to do it quickly. A quick shove of the shifter appears to just break past the stopping points for R and N so it's feasible that someone would never feel it if they're going quickly.
I have had this exact same 2014 model for 7 years now and have never had any problem with putting the vehicle in Park, but like many here in the comments have said you can’t fix stupid. The sad thing is that all the design safeguards that the car manufacturers have had to install for these stupid people has caused the price of vehicles to goes up to an almost prohibitive cost, SAD !
sadly these stupid ideas are what happens when people who design vehicles are not forced to take a drug test. i drive a large box truck and i am 100% sure the people come up with all these dumb ideas when they are high as a kite. every 4x4 needs 2 shifters1 for a transmition and 1 for a transfer case!!!stop changing what works i had a jeep cherokee for over 10 years and it worked great .my old ford bronco also had the same set up and my 1974 cj5 also had the same setup. this shifter is beyond stupid.
here is a tip from a BMW technician (who deals with ZF trans in nearly its whole line up) : turn off the vehicle. the transmission should be programed to communicate with the DME & know when the vehicle has turned off, engaging its parking pawl. if thats not how jeeps version of their ZF units works, they should really consider programing the TCM to do so.
As far as an electric, self-centering gear selector is concerned, Mercedes-Benz was early to the game with the feature that the car will automatically shift into park if it's turned off while in gear. I feel that this should at least be a default feature of electric shift selectors, with the option to disable it in case of repair work or emergency
Rented one of these things last year. There are many things about these cars that absolutely suck balls. the interior lights on all the buttons are white which illuminate the entire car at night, the center console touchscreen cannot be turned off which also is a distraction at night, and trying to use the touchscreen while driving to adjust the radio or anything else on it is a fucking travesty, the gear lever re-centers itself every time so you cant go off of its location to glance and see what gear you are in, you have to look down and read what fucking letter is illuminated in order to know which gear you are in. There is no gas cap so the fuel door has a rubber seal on it which WILL freeze shut in freezing/ wet conditions making the release button useless. The automatic High Beams are useless. And the fuel mileage is shit. Every moment I was driving it i was wondering how the fuck it was possible that in this day and age that by making cars "easier to use" we are in fact making them harder to use.
There is much media frenzy over Anton's death being caused by this vehicle rolling into him and killing him. Now that I can actually see the design...I can see that its truly driver error combined with a very poor shifter design. I am not sure Chrysler is 100% at fault here but its a poorly designed shifter. The concept is good; but why make it so complicated when u can just have a normal shift sequence ? Chrysler will no doubt defend its design and recall them slowly and quietly. A young man lost his life over this poor design combined with him not making sure it was in PARK.
I like this shifter, it is much quicker and more efficient than a traditional zig zag shifter. The recall was already in progress when this accident happened, they are making the trans go into park if you open the door. Maybe they should have done that to start with, but I've never had a problem getting it into park.
I have a 2009 Ford Mondeo and a 1995 Land Rover Discovery and they both have automatic transmissions, but they both also have a separate parking brake as well as a park position on the gear selector.
Good video. Simple and to the point. Jalopnik has had great reporting on this since the recall. I didn't need graphics, editing or music to have a good video.
People aren't stupid it is just non intuitive design. This video for me made go from neutral to on the side of Anton Yelchin that got ran over by this (his own) car
I agree, looks kind of cheesy and poorly placed indicators. What is wrong with the manual selector older cars have. I have heard this is a great transmission though. Just crappy shifter design.
Yes but your hand covers the indicators. And I am not sure but it looks like if you just push up once like on the old shifters you just go to the next selection instead of park.
+Behemothokun I saw but if is like other makes it is small and there is a delay after your selection. Some people when they get in a hurry miss it or they are not familiar with this. They recalled it for a reason I guess. If it was my personal vehicle I would be familiar with it. But a rental or someone else's ride I can see the problem. Kind of history repeating itself. I think either in the 50's or 60's they had push button "Selecto-Matic automatic transmission selectors and they had the same problems without the lawsuits because of the time.
I was messing with my girlfriend's jeep cherokee (2015), not grand cherokee and i put the car in neutral turned off the ignition and tried rolling it. Upon doing so the car automatically engaged the electronic parking break which was pretty cool! Nice little safety feature.
It's curious, that every other electronic shifter has a park button whereas ultimately the FCA and Audi A8 shifters didn't. Though I think they had different software in the Audi where it was more intuitive or that it automatically went into park when the car turned off/door opened. Aside; the FCA shifter felt really cheap
Do people just not pay attention to what they are doing anyone or not know how to use the damn parking break? Not knowing that ur vehicle isn't in the correct gear is just laziness and being ignorant 🙄
this gear shifter is among the best ones i ever used. Looks unique and easy to use. It is way better than the S-class merc and BMW beside the steering wheel shifter and if they will recall this model the S-class and BMW should be recalled too since there is no feed back at all in their shifter
bmws have a safety feature that puts car in park if you open door and step out. they also have a dedicated parking button. They were smart enough to see problems with it thars why they put in safety features to compensate for it.
your thumb goes over the button that has to be pressed to move the shifter which leaves an open space so you can see the P R N D. the shifter should've been clunkier if anything. it actually looks pretty nice though
You dumb if you cant read the dash that tells you what gear you have selected. The light on the selector was probably put there for morons such as yourself.
You are right. You would think someone would have though that people might have different finger sizes and hands so putting something like that between thumb and finger is stupid. On top of that there is no force feedback. I use to know my bmw was in park by feeling the feedback from gears shifting and knowing the position for park was all the way at the top. It was something that was intuitive and didn't require thought or glancing at the shifter or display. Studies show people make hundreds of decisions in a split second while driving.
mk17173n Keep making excuses for stupid people. The recall wasnt due to bad design, it was because of stupid people that cant or wont read the dash display
Most older cars With electronic parking brakes still needed to be engaged manually.. Ive now seen new cars now starting to have them being set on Automatically
Unfortunately car makers have to appeal to the lowest common denominator. just looking at how that shifter works I can see all sorts of problems that can arise. I understand it's all computerized but how hard is it to have the shifter, which had been almost the same for over 50 years by the way, stay in the position of the indicated gear?
wait just one second here. so you mean drivers actually need to pay attention to what their 4000 pound death machines are doing? nahhhhhh fuck that just spend millions of dollars on another recall so we can let people text and drive to their hearts content.
I think the issue is that it returns to a central position, reducing the sensory feedback. You can get in a normal car blindfold and tell what gear you're in.
@@dcan911 Exactly. I had issues when the shifter would change positions by accidentally hitting the button with my leg. It would end up shifting into sport mode or neutral. There were many surprises while trying to drive away from red lights. Sometimes you're in neutral and start to drift backwards while the engine revs up. Other times you drive away to find it won't shift out of first gear (Sport mode). Similar issues came about when parking or shifting into reverse and going into park. You always have to look at the selector to see what gear it's in. Not being in the gear you think you should be in can be a disaster when there is an emergency. Like being at a stop light and seeing a truck coming up fast in your rearview only to find out you are in neutral. I can't imagine having these issues while near the edge of a cliff or some other other precarious position. ...what a nightmare.
Was this shifter reprogrammed by the dealer per the recall? That is what I thought this was about. I have one of these and it took local FCA seven hours the reprogram it.
the fact that it returns to a lower position after you put it in park would fuck me up as well... I'm used to putting a car in park and having the gear selector stay in that detent park position... not flip back down so it looks like its in drive or neutral again

(Mazda 3's and 6's) Some things don't need to change if they work in the first place.
because these designed something poorly knowing that drivers are expecting something intuitive?
What a sh!tty design. There is NO REASON to have changed to this type of setup.
someone had to justify their job most likely
I have this shifter in my vehicle and the absolute best way you can use this shifter with minimal error is by utilizing it slowly, by moving the shifter slowly, you can actually feel how many times the shifter clicks and also look at the dash or top of the shifter to verify your in the correct gear, long story short, slow operation is the best bet
Guys, this is such bad quality. Please hold yourselves to a higher standard of video-making. Jalopnik is a respected car news outlet, if a little quirky.
do you really need better quality than this for a video about a shifter?
Jessie Ferreira Maybe if you're just some random dude, this is passable. If you're a news outlet, yes you do.
+Audio Crossing they obv want to get this out quick, why bring in a crew just for a look at a shifter, come on dude
You don't need a crew to make this better. A mic, editing, and a little B-roll requires no extra people and can go a long way.
Dude it's a TH-cam video get the fuck over it lmfao
2:28 It's especially difficult when you can't tell the difference between neutral and reverse...
Do people realize BMW/Audi had this type of shifter for several years now? No one bitched about it in those cars, it's sad that a shifter is being blamed for peoples stupidity. Sorry about what happened to a great actor though.
Those cars put themselves into park if you forget to though. These Jeeps with this shifter don't.
+97I30T shouldn't matter... don't be stupid and this wouldn't happen...
Exactly. But thats the problem with alot of Americans these days. Something bad happens that is actually the fault of the person, find something else to blame it on. There are alot of Americans that have lost sight of personal responsibility. California and states like it, with their nanny state laws are partially to blame.
Park is a seperate button ontop of the shifter for BMW's though
Autopilot for example. People using them on country roads where you already have a hard time seeing nonexistant lane markings
its a poor design even by the design of the knob. Something as simple as shifting gears shouldnt be so complicated.
you must be one of the hundreds of idiots out there that screwed this up, for as many replies I have read from you. Are you also guilty of not getting it into park? Jesus fucking christ.
+mk17173n Yep. Moving the stick forward is pretty complicated.
No problem with my shifter, I just watch what I'm doing when shifting......works perfectly 2015 Grand cherokee 107,000 miles and no problems.
Very unfortunate Jeep didn't have that updated. All models now automatically engage the parking brake if it's still in gear and you step out.
How do we prevent vehicle rollovers or vehicle rollaways and getting hit by a 2014-2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee with an automatic shifter from happening?
so the car got recalled because people are stupid?
basically
lazy americans, learn to use a manual box then.
***** in short, the car smarter than people, it knows when it is in park and when don't, still, lazy americans, learn to use a stick shift then
No I heard that the car will show you that you are in park but the transmission will actually be in neutral. This video was pointless.
SubzeroBEZERKER I work at the plant where the GC's are made and I have never seen that
Why do modern manufacturers have to fix things that aren't broken?
Found this channel by accident. Why did this shifter get recalled? I don't really see an issue?
There are some things regarding the car's features and design that should never be left to manufacturer's choice. Too much creative freedom where safety comes second.
That's just bad design. Why would you even bother to make a shifter that moves back to a central position? Dodge never ceases to amaze.
This is a common shifter design -_-
This video particularly highlights the problem as the PRND indicator were usually washed out by the glare.
Or you know, go back to the old style mechanical shifter. I preferred those anyway. Give me a column shifter over this thing anyday
Solution: Use the parking brake each time you leave the vehicle.
Alternative solution: a traditional shifter which you can be certain what gear it is in even with your eyes closed.
If your car runs over you because you "forgot" to put it in park.... You get whats coming..
I don't think it is Jeeps fault. People get too much in a hurry and don't even think. They just wanna go go go. I don't think it would be that hard to look down, put it in park and get out. an extra 5 seconds to get out will be a lot better than messing up your car.
What if you have something else you are thinking about? Something really important to do?
Wait so you don't need to depress the clutch? What is this magic?!?
not sure if trolling or doesn't realize it's an automatic
Lamenting the scarcity of manual trans options nowadays.
+GrizzlyAnders manual keeps are clunkers anyway. Never go wrong with a manual porsche
+Josh Acosta like a 924?
full auto or semi auto transmission doesn't have a manual clutch.
Who the hell thought a gear stick that RETURNS its position was a good idea?
That is very confusing and complicated. I have a manual shift car and it's very easy to leave it in neutral when you park and get out of it. I did that once and it rolled down the driveway. I tried to stop it and my hand got caught and pinned in the door almost killing me.
My older Cherokee of the same body style was recalled twice because the shifter locked up in Park. It eventually took Jeep about 5 tries to repair it.
It is very cool and no I'm not ashamed whether you want me to be or not.
what no parking brake?
I know, right? The parking brake should be set in addition to putting the vehicle in park.
He was only jumping out real quick for a few seconds to grab the mail before leaving the house. He wasn't actually parking.
Doesn't matter.
He was in a hurry. We all could have done what he did if we all had the same funky gear shift design.
Some people just aren't very smart. It's not that hard. They didn't design it expecting people to be dumb with it. I think it's cool.
A lot of recalls go into play due to user error. People are so stupid the manufacturer has to change things to compensate for the stupid.
Automatics kill, drive a manual.
While I appreciate the necessity to always know what my car is doing, how much thrust is being applied, etc.- I drove a stick for 10 years and loved that car- but CVT is just a relaxing breath of fresh air. Unless it's a sports car, no thanks.
You must be joking, right ?
Verbose Slayer I never owned a car with a slushbox. I'm talking about mr. CVT are geat here xD
+Verbose Slayer wot wot wot ! Yea!
+Verbose Slayer wot wot wot ! Yea!
"drive free or die!"
well in Yelchin's case, he dieded
hahahaha
Sad.... don't like a lot of actors liked him...😢
But he could fly the Enterprise which is far more complicated.
I remember when jeeps use to be off road suvs, not cars.
I have a GC with this shifter and I've had a problem with it. People just need to pay attention!
Never*
Good work paying attention there bro
How long should we expect to wait before we hear you got run over?
Martin Espinoza Lol So you are saying you are stupid enough to not know how this shifter works? Good God where is this country going.
Wow. Nothing happens if you operate the vehicle properly.
Not an issue about re-training. It's an issue about objective simplicity and functionality
Poor Anton.. This is why I'm happily keeping my gated 5spd auto, newer ones might be faster than my 2011 Hemi but at least my shifter still feels real
you don't have to push it up 3 times to go from drive to park. you can do it in one move.
The fly by wire on my prius always makes me double check every time I shift gears...there’s no feedback.
I prefer to drive my 2010 focus instead
Does this car have a parking brake? If so uhh i dont know maybe you should use it to not get run over by your car.
Does no one use the handbrake any more?
Also Toyota Hybrid shifters comes to their original position.
Just crappy shifter design.
seems straight forward; all the way forward for park and all the way back for drive.
Yes but your hand covers the indicators. And I am not sure but it looks like if you just push up once like on the old shifters you just go to the next selection instead of park.
Fester Hockaloogee but the indicator is also on the dash
+Behemothokun I saw but if is like other makes it is small and there is a delay after your selection. Some people when they get in a hurry miss it or they are not familiar with this. They recalled it for a reason I guess. If it was my personal vehicle I would be familiar with it. But a rental or someone else's ride I can see the problem. Kind of history repeating itself. I think either in the 50's or 60's they had push button "Selecto-Matic automatic transmission selectors and they had the same problems without the lawsuits because of the time.
When they got recalled did they getting fitted with a manual? Would of stopped loads of problems!
Is this shifted uniquely equipped to this transmission, or is the same shifter agai label in a multitude of transmissions?
I was messing with my girlfriend's jeep cherokee (2015), not grand cherokee and i put the car in neutral turned off the ignition and tried rolling it. Upon doing so the car automatically engaged the electronic parking break which was pretty cool!
Nice little safety feature.
What happened to the parking brake?
It's curious, that every other electronic shifter has a park button whereas ultimately the FCA and Audi A8 shifters didn't. Though I think they had different software in the Audi where it was more intuitive or that it automatically went into park when the car turned off/door opened. Aside; the FCA shifter felt really cheap
Doesn't this car have a handbrake?
When not broken why fix it? What’s wring with traditional gear sticks?
I'm not sure why people are downvoting this video. It accurately describes the situation. Downvote the shifter, not the video.
Has it been mentioned if the car was on or not when it hit Anton?
FCA's TH-cam video says you have to hold the shifter in park for a second or so before park engages. Is this true?
Do people just not pay attention to what they are doing anyone or not know how to use the damn parking break? Not knowing that ur vehicle isn't in the correct gear is just laziness and being ignorant 🙄
This takes away the ability to positionally verify that you're in park. Humans learn things spatially as well as visually.
this gear shifter is among the best ones i ever used.
That's a dumb shifter. They put the indicator right in the crease of your hand and thumb. If you grab that normally, you can barely see it.
your thumb goes over the button that has to be pressed to move the shifter which leaves an open space so you can see the P R N D. the shifter should've been clunkier if anything. it actually looks pretty nice though
You dumb if you cant read the dash that tells you what gear you have selected. The light on the selector was probably put there for morons such as yourself.
SgtSeth
Don't get butthurt over a dumb shifter with near zero feedback.
Studies show people make hundreds of decisions in a split second while driving.
mk17173n
Keep making excuses for stupid people. The recall wasnt due to bad design, it was because of stupid people that cant or wont read the dash display
I really like this shifter. I've enjoyed it in my 15 WK2, but I do agree the parking brake should have been electronic for added safety
"To put the vehicle into park you have to push the shifter all the way forward until it stops."
Just like every automatic shift lever ever.
Wow, who'd have thought you would need to push it *all* the way to get it into park?? I see no problem here.
Who produced this video??
