Personally, I would never actually do the last thing he mentioned. I don't think its a terrible thing to do or anything, I just don't like to ask people to cater to my likings so if my close friends start to talk about something i would either try to understand it or just try to steer the conversation elsewhere. That is, if i actually want to talk. Sometimes its okay not to engage in a conversation, you can always do your own thing (especially if you're on a call and not hanging out irl) and join in whenever you can/want to.
